It wasn’t a big deal because Cousins was probably going to Atlanta regardless. But given that the Dolphins did not get Brady, it’s hard to see how they gained much of an advantage by tampering.

For one thing, what the Dolphins did was FAR worse. Twice they tried to lure Brady to Miami WEEKS before Brady’s contract with the New England Patriots was set to expire and not during the legal tampering period and not with those other teams’ consent. Ross (who was in the front office) even went so far as to set up an in-person meeting between Flores and Brady on a private yacht in the winter of 2020. They did it again when Brady was still with the Bucs. So the tampering happened while he was on a contract with two different teams over a period of two years. Kirk talked with the head athletic trainer (during the legal tampering period) who has nothing to do with contracts which is really what tampering (plus the no communication part) is all about. He wanted continuity in his treatment with rehabbing his injury and called the Falcons. And because the tampering had nothing to do with contract negotiations (it was a logistical matter), the punishment was far less. The Vikings had basically offered a one year deal and wouldn’t budge on offering a long term contract (which goes back to when the new Vikings GM got hired in 2022), but the Falcons did so Kirk wasn't gonna go back to the Vikings.

They’re gambling that he can get back to his 2022 form and the way the cap is growing and QB salaries are skyrocketing, this could prove to be a bargain in a few years. The alternative is to let it ride, in which case, the price to re-sign him will just go up and/or they could risk losing him to free agency in two years and have to start over in the draft.
