The 360 no-scope on problem 4 is pretty nifty. LOL "That's the sound of Ryan stepping away." Hilarious commentary from the both announcers.

A lot more interesting to watch the the usual spectator sports I think. Really get a look at the competitors struggling to solve problems and the wonderful athleticism in general. Can't wait for the Olympics...

Great format viewing the climbers together. Climbing has always been about comradery and friendship. Thx

It's not a good format. The late comer usually gets the benefits by watching someone else who already exhausted their energy in the routes - especially those routes that are more draining e.g. how megan had experimented and found the beta for route 3 but was exhausted and someone else came and followed her sequence which would be more efficient and energy saving.
@MrMeasaftw
@MrMeasaftw 4 жыл бұрын
That's the thing that makes it interesting though. It may be less "fair" than a normal format, but at least they're trying something new. It lets the setters set harder and more interesting routes too. You can't argue that men's 4 was probably not something that would normally be set in a climbing comp.

Horrible format indeed.
@Brewnelley

Yes true but then they are first on the next boulder so they get the same disadvantage, not to mention in this comp you cant opt out of doing a boulder, you cant even go to the next one unless you complete it which adds a massive layer of difficulty when compared to 4 minute limits
@FocusClimbing

I don't think it would be great for IFSC comps but for local comps where its more about fun for all involve then i think its awesome. matter of personal preference I guess.
@IzzyBee99
@IzzyBee99 4 жыл бұрын
MrMeasaftw not really, the setters can’t set as hard since one person has to do every boulder whereas in a World Cup if no one does a boulder that’s fine
@hydra66

this format depends on all of the competitors being able to do all of the problems. If say problem 2 is dialled a little too hard, there's a bottleneck where the field just doesn't move on from there. Different people have different styles. I'd like to see the competitors have a chance on all of the boulders rather than knockout on bodes 1-3

I don't mind the format. It awards perseverance and versatility. The setting was pretty interesting. Also competitors can work on problems longer and still take the win if a later problem suits their style
@alkaliwreck2474
@alkaliwreck2474 4 жыл бұрын
I think the sequential gate format would be better if there was a problem per competitor, and the route was circular, so that if you start on problem 6, your next set is 1, then 2, etc.

I'm not a climber, but it seems like this format where you can't progress sort of matches real rock climbing. People travel to a particular rock and spend days or weeks trying to climb one route. They must be used to the feeling.

As a non-climbing spectator I have to say that this apparently chaotic presentation is an obstacle to wider appreciation of these splendid athletes’ abilities. Climbers may understand what’s going on but to me it looks like a random free-for-all, I feel I have little hope of understanding who’s doing better or worse; like being further along the course isn’t necessarily good because the others are watching you work through the problem. I feel like the men’s comp was won by someone without so much problem-solving ability just on pure muscle and copying the guy who figured it out before him. If this sport wants to gain a wider audience the format really needs some work. I assume the Olympics will be nothing like this. Amazing abilities though!

@NickRoman

Yes, as you will have noticed if you listened to the commentary, this is unusual. The "finals" of the IFSC World Cup show one climber at a time and work with like 3 or 4 cameras in different positions. This is a low level competition.

Stupid format of competition in my opinion... Not being authorized to attempt all boulders because competitors need to complete one to go to the next... never seen this before and hope to not see this in the futur.
@Laura147HLY
@Laura147HLY 4 жыл бұрын
I think this is an interesting experiment. The more common format has its flaws too, for one example, it's only testing a climber's flash level. This format does reward perseverance more, allows the climbers more time to work through a problem. They can set harder problems and see who can get through eventually without too strict of a time limit.
@Jelissei
@Jelissei 4 жыл бұрын
@@Laura147HLY yeah, but they could allow the participants to tackle the problems in the sequence of their choosing. No bottleneck, less of an advantage watching the others.
