In 2023, a team of seasoned mariners and passionate kelp breeders funded by ARPA-E were awarded a first-of-a-kind permit to build a giant kelp farm off the coast of California, with the hopes that the lessons learned from that system could pave the way for new kelp-based energy products.
One year later, ARPA-E joined the Ocean Rainforest team on site at their 86-acre demonstration project five miles from the Santa Barbara Harbor to see how their system works and discuss the potential impact this groundbreaking system could have at scale.
If successful, Ocean Rainforest could soon be producing a million tons of kelp per year for use in biofuels and a host of other applications.
