Luffy didn't know what was going on on the island, who Nami is working under, what they have done to her and her family, how much hardship she has been enduring, how much they wronged her, how many of the villagers have they killed... none of it, he literally has nothing to do with anything. but all it takes is for Nami to ask, and without a moment of hesitation, he put his treasured straw hat on her head, and take on the most dangerous pirate in all of East Blue, just because they hurt his friend.

I love how Luffy falls asleep during people's backstories. Similarly he also fell asleep during the whole Fisher Tiger - Otohime backstory. Too much thinking makes his head hurt 😂

Oda made it clear that Luffy has the ability to see through the heart of people. Luffy knows immediately that Katakuri was not an enemy, Luffy knows also that Black Beard is not a friend during his speech in Mock town. Rayleigh says during Luffy training that Luffy has the ability to know people at first sight. Oda created Luffy such that he acts instinctively on principle the same way that Zorro instinctively acts on Honor. Unlike Gon, Luffy never acts on whims, he acts on principles and that is why he makes the right choices when trusting people.

I have a feeling Kaido will get beaten but have the reality that leading via fear is is downfall He is like Gekko Moria who lead the dead out of fear for loss And the cat claws guy at syrup village who ran from his role as a pirate - the fear of him had his crew cheering on Luffy at one point - they could not think for themselves I think these 3 elements will factor in the Kaido battle All bad captains who don’t know how to lead

In Film Z when Zephyr asked Luffy what his straw hat meant to him, Luffy replied with “It’s my guide”. Adds a another layer of symbolism to Luffy giving Nami the hat, considering Nami became his navigator after the arc.

Honestly this moment alone made me love Luffy because while he was always a goofy character, he knew when to be serious to protect his friends. He doesn't comfort her in a way most would expect, he gives her his most precious possession as a promise that he will return and that he trusts her. The he kicks some major fish ass.

He give her the hat, that she can trust him, that she never get hurt from anybody. Ruffy will defeat arlong and after everything is over he comes to take his hat back. It is symbolic that his hat is equal with nami as nakama. A promise that ruffy comes back and everything will alright.

Surprised he didn't mention how Luffy wasn't present when Nami backstop was told to the straw hats. Its deep when you realise her backstory didn't affect his decision, he knew and cared who she was without it. This is why luffy is such a great character 👏

When Luffy and Arlong entered Nami's Prison (The Map Room), the place felt empty, dark, twisted and no life whatsoever. And when Luffy picked up the quill/pen to see blood, you know what devilish deed has been done to Nami for 8 years of her life. I was angry at Arlong ONLY and wanted Luffy to beat him up. But...he did something far more better to punish Arlong without even needing to kill that worthless carcass. Destroying everything and making Arlong wipe out various sea charts in the room became a break from the darkness to return back to the light. Victory was assured. Oda did great in his early writting and still holds to this day. 😁

I really hope Bink’s Sake is analyzed here at some point. While the moment hits hardest IMO in the anime, the manga version of Brook’s backstory is so good and tragic and ties into his cry of “I’m so glad to be alive!” And request to join the crew

man i love that Oda gave that twist to Tiger's character. At first, he was already a romanticized legend. But when even the most benevolent, the one whos pushing the hardest for peace ended up harboring deep hatred.

Watching this again, I kept thinking that some people not knowing this story could see the problem with "the male hero" having to help the weak "female" character, and she even has to ask for it. But as you all know, that’s not the case at all. Luffy wants to help Nami. Because she’s his friend. And by finally asking, she ALLOWS him to help her. Luffy says it in this Arc himself: he can’t navigate or do other things he needs to make his way forward. But he is strong and can protect his friends. That’s his purpose. He just needs the permission and acceptance of his strength being used the way he wants to. Man, what a great show!

When I watched it as a teenager, I got quite infuriated that I had to pause the episode because I couldn't read the subtitles while crying my heart out. As I grew up and reread this moment a few times after, now I understand that what my immaturity was exposed to was great story telling. Great video as always, Ohara!! This series is a wonderful idea, and it only gets better and better with each episode!! Keep up the great work!!

This is actually how i recommend one piece to friends or people asking me about it. Watch it from the beginning until completing arlong park. If you didn't enjoy it, found it boring, generic or whatever negative feedback, stop and find another anime to your liking. Otherwise, you're already hooked at this point and will continue to always be.

You missed an important part. Tha fact that Luffy does not care about her backstory makes this moment so strong. The spectator is invested by her cruel story but Luffy is just Luffy.

I can testify this. I started watching OP like a month ago and I was finding it just fun, but when got to this freaking scene everything changed. I was already crying for Nami because her story is so freaking sad and she's so strong for enduring that, but dude, the moment she asked for help and he gave her his hat, his freaking treasure, I understood why this series is so loved and why he's considered top MC and honestly yet I'm only in Skypeia right now I already consider Luffy the best MC in shonen and I love Nami so much.

My favourite moment is when Luffy destroys the map room. He didn’t hear Namis backstory but he quickly put it together in his head upon seeing the room, filling him with rage. He didn’t need to know everything, he just cared about Nami and understood she was traumatized. Great moment for both Luffy and Nami

Out of the entire Manga, there are two points where I come back just to read casually. One being Luffy vs Crocodile round 1, and the other being this. It was just so perfect, the backstory of Nami and her breakdown at her having her heart broken, and Luffy helping his friend no matter what she says. First one to give her his hat, which means utter trust given to her. Not a shred of doubt in Luffy's mind. Can we also talk about the "Let's go." "Right!" (or however it is for you). That part gets me so hyped regardless. Agree 100% one of the best moments in One Piece.

I always thought Luffy vs. Crocodile round 1 was one of the best moments from the anime, everything from vivi being grabbed to Luffy's defeat. It's stylized, has good music, good animation, good pacing, and some good filler interjections from the strawhats worrying about Luffy.

This arc is also a first big highlight on Luffy's belief in freedom. He could help Nami and the villagers as soon as he landed on Cocoyashi's village but he chose not to. The reason why is he needs an explicit words from the people to ask for help to show that they want to be helped on their own volition, staying true to his way of Pirates. This is why Luffy is so different from any other shounen protagonist making One Piece a gem that it is right now.

I found One piece in the 2nd grade in Germany, getting home a little earlier than usual and fell in love with it. Fast forward 2.5 years or so and I'm in Canada trying to get settled and over my homesickness and found the One Piece manga at a Chapter's bookstore. From here One Piece became like a piece of home away from home. I found anime episodes in German on KZfaq, found out how far ahead the manga was and caught myself up. Now I'm an aspiring fighter and all the stuff I didn't know was subconsciously drawing me to this master-one-piece is still a very important part of my life. I've grown with One Piece (and vice versa) from the age of 8 to 26. Wild

This was probably the most powerful and story changing arc of the entire series! I loved it and it brought about the beginning of their fights as a crew! The story telling of this anime is probably one of the best and allows you to really connect with the characters and their story.

You kind of jumped over my favorite factor in Luffy helping Nami, he gave her his hat. He had been written to hate anyone who touches or ruins his precious gift and he gives it so willingly to her. to me, that meant more than anything he couldve said to her.

That was the moment when I went ‘Oh, this is why people love it so much’ that moment sold it for me. Her finally asking for help, Luffy taking off his hand and just setting it on her head and the shot showing the rest of the crew had just been waiting for the word.

Maybe its a bit late, but the scene with Nami in highlights some other things as well. It shows a side of Ruffy we havent seen yet. He not just goes and fights Arlong, he waits for Nami to ask for help, which is important for her own character development. The scene is also the first scene where his crew fully acts like his crew HE IS the captain, and they wait for his orders. Arlong Park is the founding stone of the Strawhats

I was on the fence about the series, but I fell in love the moment when Nami ask Luffy for help and he gave her his hat. Then there was the cherry blossom bomb while Doctorine yelled at chopper to get lost, the straw hats gesture to vivi as they sailed away from alabasta, Luffy and Blackbeard's meeting, Luffy and Usopp's fight, Nico Robin "I want to live!", the Going Merry coming to rescue the crew one last time, Usopp and Luffy's reunion, Zoro's sacrifice for his captain etc etc etc etc.........the show is just unbelievable.

Arlong Park gave us one of the three saddest Backstories in ALL of One Piece. It took hundreds of episodes for another backstory to hit as hard as Nami. That was Robin's. Then hundreds later for us to get Law's tale. Back then, I nearly cried when Nami started stabbing herself with the knife. Never would have thought we'd have more epic moments like that for years to come. Plus the march to Arlong Park. Usopp looking like a badass with the rest.

15:49 There's one thing you haven't mentioned. I remember seeing the orriginal episode and being quite put off by the happy, cheerful, significantly brighter background (particularly the sky). In the updated episode that's fixed to reflect the desperation and depression that Nami's feeling. Subtle things like making the background reflect the mood of a scene are cool (And only horror goes for the opposite effect to make things more eerie)

While I know why you chose to say so, I feel the Baratie arc was the first to introduce a motive going between distant sagas, that being Mihawk's existance. He has since then been used as a very effective method of creating hype and relying information, and his appeareance was just perfect to "cover" for the importance of Nami's dissapearance. I think Arlong Park is better oc, just that Baratie is ofen overlooked as the first step on Oda's betterment of his worldbuilding and character development

I will never forget it ever since I've watched it. I love this anime because if you want to cry, watch this. If u want to laugh, watch this. If you want to get mad (f*** u Celestial dragons) watch this. I hope everyone gets to ride this journey of feelings watching this anime, it trulyyyy is a gem.
