The Montreal Expos Win A Playoff Series!

Let's say it now: The Montreal Expos were winners. True, they never won a pennant, and they never got to play in the Serie Mondiale thanks to an errant fastball in 1981 and a called (player's) strike in 1994. But the Expos won a heckuva lot of games in the 80s and even the 90s. And they even won a playoff series---the 1981 National League Division Series---thanks to some terrific pitching from Steve "Cy" Rogers, who beat Steve "Lefty" Carlton twice in one week, giving up one run in 17 2/3 innings of work. If Major League Baseball had introduced the modern wildcard playoff format in the 1970s, you would have seen half-a-dozen additional playoff appearances from the Expos...and perhaps more celebrations like this one from October 11, 1981.

This was one of the best moments in Montreal baseball. I screamed so loud that I think they heard me in Philadelphia! So many superstars came from that team.

We here in MTL only had 3 screaming moments.. 1- Final out in reg season when Francona made the catch in left field to win division. 2- this game.. 3- When Jerry White hit 3 run HR to take 4-1 lead over LAD and get up 2-1 in series and be 1 game away from World Series vs NYY. When white hit that HR on a FRI night on NBC, i screamed so loud, the cops came by. Happiest day of my sports life, and i've seen around 10 cups with the Habs.

I will never forget 1981 and my Montreal Expos. The Expos had the best record in MLB between the period between (1979-1981) Only Division champions were making the playoffs during that area and this is the way it is supposed to be even if was really frustrating in 1979 and 1980. Too many teams in the playoffs now.

was there for twin bill at Jarry Park vs the Pirates in 75. I was there opening day 80 - 90. I was there for 82 All Star Game, watched Concepcion's HR down the left field line. Sat 10 rows up from 3rd base on that day. Pirates and "Pop's" took us down in 79. I cried when Schmidt took us out in 80. Dave, Duke and "thanks everyone and glad to have you aboard for tonight's game". "Up, UP and away"...The roller coster of 81. I was there for the Lea no-no in May '81. A wealth of wonderful memories

I remember this series, I predicted the Expos to go to the World Series in '81 As well as the Oakland A's, But it went completely in the other direction as the Yankees and Dodgers would meet, Great Expos team though knocking out defending champion Phillies.

Well you thank three people for the reason why the Expos never won a World Series and no longer in Montreal: Rick Monday, Donald Fehr, and Bud Selig. Monday's homer in game 5 (decisive game) ended hopes of the Expos winning the World Series. I think they if he didn't hit the homer, the Expos would have rallied in extra innings and win the pennant and ultimately the W.S.

@spacerazer 5 жыл бұрын
It is a matter of semantics to call this a playoff series. It is almost identical to the 3 game final series in Montreal the year before. That year the Phillies won and went on to win the WS. This was for the Eastern divison title before the wild card existed. The Expos/Natonals as of 2018 have never won a divison playoff series. They have participated in five. All were 3 of 5 and all but one went 5 games. All were heartbreakers.

There is no reason the core of the 1994 team couldn't have been kept together. Brochu instructed the GM to have a fire sale. He traded Walker, Grissom, and Wettleland, and allowed Larry Walker to become a free agent without offering him anything. Those guys weren't commanding so much money. Walker was willing to stay for less, but he was never given an offer. If that team was kept together for 1995, they would have been a legitimate contender again.

Actually Philadelphia finished 2nd in the NL and Montreal 3rd in attendance in 1981 behind the Dodgers. San Diego was dead last. Montreal drew more than 2 million fans from 1979 up until 1983 with the exception of the strike shortened '81 season.

And of course Selig and Fehr's bighead and greed were the reason why players went on strike, and ultimately cancelled the rest of the '94 season.The Expos had best record in baseball and well on their way to winning it all. When baseball finally returned, the Expos had no choice but get rid of their top players in a cost cutting move, and ultimately never were a factor again until after they left Montreal in 2004. BTW: I am a Cardinals fan, but had the utmost respect for the Expos.

What about 1996? The Expos finished at 88-74 and quietly finished just 2 games behind the LA Dodgers for the NL Wild Card. Keep in mind, once you get through 162 games and qualify for the play-offs, anything is possible. Best-of-five and best-of-seven series in baseball can be very unpredictable. After 1996, the Expos never challenged for a play-off spot again and became good for 90+ losses a year.
@jbobbster
@jbobbster 11 жыл бұрын
GM Claude Brochu is at fault for getting rid of the top players. Yes, the Expos did lose a substantial amount of revenue from their final 29 home games that weren't played, and $20 million in revenue from the World Series, even if they didn't make it. But they could have kept the core of the team together. They would have taken less money to stay. Larry Walker even stated he would have taken less money to remain there. He was offered nothing, and the Expos just let him go into free agency.

Rogers didn't look like he wanted to be on the mound at all. Very painful to watch him pitch especially late in a game like this. He never pitched as well before or after that 81 season especially after Fanning took over as manager.

The only reason the Expos beat the Phillies was because of the strike-shortened season. The Phillies had wrapped up the first half and weren't that enthusiastic. They were coming off being World Champions.The Expos choked after that.
