What's a CD-rom-rom?
@GTV-Japan
@GTV-Japan 2 жыл бұрын
This line seems to confuse a lot of people but the PC Engine cd attachment was called the “CD-ROM2” and when I first saw that I thought that was a little strange because where is CD-ROM 1? But what I didn’t know is that in Japanese in casual writing, 2 means you repeat the word so they called it CD-ROM-ROM. This was probably a way to copyright the term or at least stand out as something original sounding So ever since I’ve learned that I’ve always called it “rom rom!” If you play some CD games in an audio CD player there will be a track that says rom-rom referring to either the disc or the machine. As far as pcfx, they just called it CD-ROM. Thanks for asking!

I think the PC-FX would have been successful if had done this: 1) Make it backward compatible with all of the PC Engine games and add ons. 2) Sell it at a lower price under the PSX & Saturn's prices. 3) Sell animes, real life shows and movies on that system. Since the quality was so clear during that time. If they would done those 3^, I think the system would have last & sold way more. Not every systems need to be strongest in term of graphic to sell alot (the Game Boy & Wii for examples). While 3D was the big thing during that time, there were still tons of 2D games being released and they sold decently.

There was literally nothing they could've done to fix this thing-- it was basically the Sega CD as stand alone console except released in 1995. This thing didn't have the support to take on the Super Famicom, much less the other new systems coming.

The NEC consoles have always been the major blind spot in my console gaming knowledge, even though we actually owned a TurboGrafx-16. (I think my brother's friend just gave it away to us, which--ouch for NEC! But it broke just a few years later, unfortunately.) I honestly never knew PC-FX was even a thing, so this video was really fascinating and illuminating for me, thanks!

The 5th gen of gaming consoles is the most fascinating one for me and it was fun to learn new info on the PC-FX in a nicely summarised video. It's delayed release leading to it competing with more powerful competition reminds me a lot of the situation with the Atari 7200, which was also released 2 years after it's creation and against tougher competition than it would have otherwise faced.
@GTV-Japan
@GTV-Japan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah a lot of people have compared it to that. The thing is the Tramiel owned Atari Corp wanted the 7800 out immediately in 1984 but had issues over who would pay the developers and so they sat on it. Too bad!
@grinbrothers
@grinbrothers 2 жыл бұрын
@@GTV-Japan It'd have been interesting in either system's case as to what would have happened if they had released at their earlier time frame. Jack Tramiel wanted the 7800 out immediately? Huh, I thought the story was that he delayed it in order to have Atari focus on competing with his old company of Commodore in the home computer market (Atari ST vs Commodore's Amiga). Interesting to hear otherwise.
@GTV-Japan
@GTV-Japan 2 жыл бұрын
No that’s just how the story gets told these days. True they did focus on computers but they released 2600 games in 84 and 85 and brought out the 2600 jr in America in 85. The idea that not a single video game wasn’t sold during that time isn’t true. A lot of is Nintendo and their revisionist history. Another interesting point is that until it became self owned, Warner kept the Atari arcade division around because it made money!

I had a TG16. Bought it during it's "popular" days in North America. Got it home, and instead of "Bonk's Adventure", I got "Keith Courage in Alpha Zones". Not a bad game, would even consider it a Cult Classic. But I wanted Bonk's Adventure. Traded it with a friend for a portable (4-5") TV. Wish I had kept it though, even if it failed in NA, it had some good games. Did get the TG16 Mini. Wish it could be hacked because ironically (for me) it's missing "Keith Courage in Alpha Zones". As for the PCFX, I honestly didn't know about its existence until maybe the mid 2000's. Great insight into this platform.
@GTV-Japan
@GTV-Japan 2 жыл бұрын
That’s cool! The thing about Keith is that there was only one production order of tg16s so how ever many they made in 1989 (500-750k is estimated) that’s what they had forever because they ended up not selling all of them. So bonk was a mail away. That’s all they could do! Thanks for watching 💫

I saw this console in a EGM page and wonder how well they will do in Japan where they had great games for PC Engine. I also thought this console wouldn’t be available in this side of the Atlantic due to the TG-16 failure that made impossible for me to play some Castkevania X: Rondo of Blood. To me, the PC FX looks like a time capsule of an anime era I'm very familiar with, the late 80s to mid 90s. That alone makes it compelling to me if not very much fun to play with. Visual novels and related genres were already well established on computer platforms, many years before the PC-FX. To be honest I wouldn't credit much influence to the PC-FX about this. It is considered a failed console and that might be true, but still an interesting one. Nobody knew 100% how the market would move forward, so obviously many experiments went bad, but needed to be made. Not too different in concept and in fate than other Japanese (like the Bandai Playdia) or Western (the Commodore CDTV, or the very much talked Philips CDi) machines that are often ridiculed, but certainly deserve respect for what they were.

The late 80s to mid 90s was really when anime started to seep in to America, with "anime" really starting to gain some fans over here. By the mid-1990s, I was into anime as well. I remember Tenchi Muyo from the end of this video. I'm surprised there was no Ranma 1/2 to be found.

The show ended in like 1992 or something while the comic ran till 1996 so once the show ends usually the accompanying game series also ends. Sad. There was a live action ranma movie in 2011 though!

To me, it's always so oddly fascinating to look back at the late 80s and early 90s era of gaming. Not only was it before my time, but it really was the Wild West when it came to game consoles. It's so strange to think of how there's really only 3 big consoles today, but back then, not only were there multiple outsiders, but different variations that experimented with graphics and add-ons. Call me crazy, but I almost yearn for this type of gaming climate nowadays. Sure, it'd be chaotic, but man, would it ever be fun!!

It's hard to believe they botched the successor to such a great console as the PC Engine. That system was as good as the SNES and SMD, and is considered legendary to this day. Now that I think if it, the 16-bit era may have been the best, because it also had the Neo Geo, which meant four awesome consoles competing in the same era.

I just commented about how much I love this thing, but another aspect is that NEC were PC kings at the time as well as on top of the world with the PC Engine through two generations. They were worried that a new console would step on the toes of their other platform. Hence, they made PC-FX games playable on PC. I got that that thing on release, it was unbelievable being able to play videos like that on my computer. I was more happy that they kept the original sound from the PC Engine without falling into the FM trap that nobody wanted. PLUS, they looked at what PC-98 players wanted and that's what the PC-FX got. They didn't seem to think that console players might want something different. It's basically the same mistake Sony has made now, thinking that everybody wants to play the same things. It's just Sony doesn't have a PC platform to fall back on. Sony still has time to fix things, NEC doesn't. NEC made the right choices at the time and I think anybody else would have done the same. The market was shifting majorly, though. It's a shame.

I have a PC-FX still. There's not a ton to play for a non-Japanese speaker, but I've really enjoyed a few. Last Imperial Prince was a lot of fun, and felt like a Falcom game. Zeroigar has such a great '90s anime robot flavor. Team Innocent is a great game in early survival horror modes... there's fun stuff to play. Just wish Zenki didn't cost so much

What a nice two-fer, and it was something new for me, too. Back in the days, I somehow saw very very very very very little about the PC Engine/TurboGrafx but also saw the name itself pop up quite often. Hard to describe. Maybe it's cause I'm from Germany (and rural), that has changed over time, but yeah, this was still something I did not know, thanks. (Also, regarding this strange 'rarely seen' but 'heard about quite a few times: The 3DO was a bit similar, I heard about it quite a bit, but I've only seen it very rarely in catalogues and the like. NeoGeo, though? I only learned of that one after getting the internet, same with the CPS and boy do both of these have some top notch fighting games in them. )

This is reminiscent of Atari with the release of the 7800. It's unfortunate that they weren't able to succeed but it is fascinating to imagine how history might have been altered had they decided to launch when it was more relevant. Hard to say with the hefty price tag and niche genres of games but perhaps the market would have been healthy enough for NEC to stay in the console business.

I was a huge Turbo Duo fan and an avid collector of Japanese console games in the '90s. The PC-FX always intrigued my Japan-obsessed brain, but I held out until the summer of '98, when I finally imported one. They had already reduced the price by then, but I don't think I fully understood that I was buying a dead system -- information was harder to come by back then. I bought around 10 games, of which I was only really able to play three or four of them. I was in college and my minor was Japanese, but I still found it too tedious to read and translate the reams and reams of text contained in most of the games. I remember thinking they felt more like PC games, which I mostly didn't care for. When the Dreamcast came out, I lost all interest in the PC-FX and traded it to a guy for a Nintendo 64 and some games. At least I got to play Mario and Zelda out of the deal.

@GTV-Japan
@GTV-Japan Жыл бұрын
Backwards compatibility was always grounded upon in the industry because it was feared, rightly so, that fewer games would be developed for the new hardware and the older one would just continue on. Not to mention the perception of the new machine being an upgrade or continuation of the old one and therefore not as powerful at least in the eyes of the consumer. And of course back then and in Japan still, there wasn’t this concept that a customer would keep every single game that they owned, building a giant game wall shrine in the house where every game would be played for all time. Old games were considered worthless and were often sold off. After all the company bonus with 2-3x a month’s pay is coming so you need something new to spend that money on. And so for these reasons I will stand by the notion, probably alone, that backwards compatibility would have not been a good idea. Thanks for watching

There was really no way anyone could have successfully competed with the PS1 in that generation, because Sony secured a ton of third-party support. The PS1 library of games is absolutely stellar. If you limit yourself to a top ten or top twenty, I would say that the N64 was better than the PS1, but when you go beyond twenty games you notice that the PS1 library continues to offer 5-star games while the N64 library doesn't. The Sega Saturn sadly was a disaster of planning and organization. It had a ton of great 2D games but there was no way those could compete in the mid-to-late 90s. It was like the Atari 7800 competing against the NES and SMS.
