The new Lotus Emira is the last of the V6 petrol engined two seater sports cars to be produced by the legendary company, but it is also Lotus' most accurately constructed car ever thanks to the installation of a state of the art CMM measuring system from LK Metrology. Steve Shickell & Dave Robinson from LK explain to MTDCNC's Lyndsey how they worked tirelessly with Lotus to enable them to improve their quality to create a world class vehicle . LK Metrology who have been trading since 1963 installed the HC 90 CMM, a twin column machine with two arms & two probing systems that sit inside the production line measuring the car at two stages of the production journey. This amazing piece of technology has a 20 minute cycle time measuring 300 points inside & outside of the car without touching the body using laser cross scanners. Lotus' Dimensional Quality Manager Tom Mackrill, explains that the HC 90 gives Lotus a high accuracy, quick & flexible system allowing them produce extremely high build quality. As a manufacturing engineer and auto enthisiast, I know first-hand that too many sportscar buyers excuse poor quality because "Hey, all high-performance cars have issues!" Well, this doesn't have to be, and I'm glad that Lotus is putting much effort into quality assurance. 👍

I was at the ‘ coal face ‘ of this LK Metrology HC90 Cmm installation. Great to work closely with Tom and the team at Hethel . Congratulations Lotus , a magnificent end product !

Good video dive into the Quality measures put in place. 👍 Anyone else notice the white Emiras in line with the blue, red cars? Didn’t think white was an available color. Hmm 🤔

There still is. The Emira ‘is’ hand built.

@@meenboli not really, I visited the factory and they have definitely moved away from handbuilt and it’s mostly machined with some hand assembly. And that’s understandable. They went from producing a couple of hundred cars a year. I’m not surprised they needed a bail out and Geely lifeline. But as is the case with most Chinese companies, they suck the living daylights out of any company that they own.

@@bakhteria actually you’re incorrect. I visited the factory 2 months ago - invited by the MD no less. They have one robot. Two maybe. The main one attaches the body panels to the frame (via glue-ish). The paint shop is automated. That’s it. Everything else is hand done. That makes it very special as far as I’m concerned.

@@meenboli maybe still special but not the same as when they were building a few hundred cars a year. Unfortunately, they had to sell out to anyone that would save them. Too bad it’s not a better brand like McLaren, who has already snatched up a large number of engineers and designers from Lotus.

@@bakhteria agreed. Not sure McLaren have nailed the quality though and servicing costs are shocking. Lotus built 5033 Emira last year. I know because I’ve been in the factory and they told me. Still makes them pretty special to me. They can’t survive as a business making only a few hundred a year. Which has been proven already!
