Roger says a lot of really great things here... "success is living from your heart, living for your passion"... "we are here to give, rather than to take", "success is measured in how much that we give." Roger has shared much of himself, his heart and soul through his music and that is why every song is pure magic, able to connect and unite all of us in a very subtle yet significant way.

Supertramp is not just one person. It was the blend of musicianship betweern Hodgson and Davis, but also the other 3 players, especially the fills from John Helliwell, which enriched a lot their sound. Few mainstream rock bands had a saxophonist, as a permanent player. Let’s not forget that Supertramp only started achieving commercial success after the other 3 members joined the band. So, it was not all a Hodgson and Davis thing. In my opinion, Hodgson was a master at developing the structure or framework of new songs, like the sequence of chords, the orchestration and arrangements. And of course he had an unmatched high-pitched voice. However, even Hodgson songs have a lot of contributions from Davis, and vice-versa. Would “School”, composed by Hodgson, be the same song without the harmonica solo by Davis in the beginning, and additionally the piano solo in the middle? Or without the sax and clarinet solo sections of Helliwell? Hodgson’s songs’ skeleton was really good, but the virtuoso contributions of Rick Davis and Helliwell raised it to another level completely and provided the flesh. Hodgson was a great song developer, but he needed his mates to help with the tunes development in terms of technical musicianship’s complexity (piano and sax solos). Hodgson’s piano abilities were far from matching those of Davis’. But this same reasoning also is valid for Davis. Let’s take the example of “Goodbye Stranger”, composed by Davis. Would it be the same song without the vocal interchange between him and Hodgson during the chorus? And without that crazy talented extended guitar solo at the end? Of course not. They complemented each other because no matter who composed the tune, he always let the other participate with instrumental relevant lines to the song. So, in the end, it sounded Supertramp. They achieved greatness together, and they created magic when joining efforts. On their own, they are still good, but they lack that outstanding spark from the 70’s. And even though Hodgson had most of the hits, it does not mean Rick’s songs were lower in quality. They were just less popular in terms of sales, but artistically speaking, they were equally great. Here’s a list of the most famous songs from each of them: Roger Hodgson: The Logical Song Give a Little Bit Dreamer It’s Raining Again Breakfast in America Take the Long Way Home Hide in Your Shell And songs written by Rick Davies: Bloody Well Right Crime of the Century Goodbye Stranger Rudy Asylum Another Man’s Woman Ain’t Nobody But Me Downstream From Now On Gone Hollywood Lover Boy We can not really say one musician is better than the other. All those songs helped made their albums great, and, as Hodgson puts it, Supertramp wrote entire albums, because it “took listeners on a 40-minute journey”. That 40-minute journey would have not been completed without Rick’s tunes, and Hodgson for sure understands this. Both were great, and that greatness grew exponentially when they collaborated. Wish they could have understood that, and would have stuck together. They already are an immortal band with just 14 years under their belt. But they could even had reached wider acclaim if they had not disbanded and kept putting out material for the past decades. But, we still have the old albums to enjoy their greatness when there was no rivalries. So, let’s keep enjoying them! :-)

Very cool interview - for me while growing up Supertramp was a faceless band so it's great to finally see the guy behind all of the amazing songs. Really if you love Supertramp you love Roger Hodgson, i've discovered at his concerts that he is the music force and spirit of the band. I'm completely awed at how he sounds exactly the same, if not better than the original albums. Top concert experience ever.

This was a fun listen. I've always identified more with Roger in the group, his songs resonated with me more than the others. I'll never forget my first Supertramp concert with my dad and I saw Roger and his 12-string playing Give a Little Bit, I loved him so much then and even more now! My little boy Brett likes to call Roger 'Mr. Logical' some times :) He is such a sweet heart, he looks up to Roger a great deal - while I was watching this he came up to my screen and said "I want to be like him, mum!" Very big heartfelt thank you, Roger!!

And I will never, ever forget as a young boy, 7 years old during the summer of 1979, hearing The Logical Song and it really touching me, catching my ear, and it being played over and over on the radio. But it was hearing Take the Long Way Home in the car with my parents later on that year that made me a Supertramp fan and I said, "I love this song! I want that album this song is on," and my parents showing me how to earn the $6.99 for it by doing chores around the house. Then, they took me down to a dept. store to buy Breakfast in America with my own money! After that, i bought Crime of the Century thinking it was the follow-up, not seeing until some time later that it was from 1974. Anyway, love your story about your son...reminded me of me as a little boy falling in love with Roger's songs and Supertramp. Cheers!

Roger Hodgson is truly a class act. I find it very admirable that he would leave a very successful career in its prime to raise a family. After leaving music for 22 years to come back and be able to pick up right where he left off, says a lot about the quality of his music and his musicianship. The old saying goes, "If you love something, set it free, if it comes back to you, it's yours, if it doesn't, it never was" rings true. It certainly has "come back" to him, so to speak, which goes to show that music has always been 'his'. And, thankfully, he LOVES to share his talent with the rest of the world. His love for his craft comes through at every show. I've always loved Roger's music and I always will.

actually, this was not the case.....and when he left supertramp he said as much.....he wanted as a very gifted song writer and part of one of the best ensemble musicians of their generation......to branch out by himself......in other words he felt trapped......he did not do that.....at least not in a creative sense.....but rather he later answered that he just wanted to escape from the whole music industry and become a dad.....nothing wrong in that......BUT for me......if you take Lennon away from McArtney or Davies away from Hodgson......and then take away the other brilliant band members that collaborated to make the band so innovative.....then you are left with a recipe without having any chance of getting all the ingredients.....

Just like he said I see the happiness and joy of his being when I watch and re watch him perform in the live material I've been lucky enough to find on KZfaq. I would put him right up there with someone like Paul Rodgers. They both have a sparkle in they're eyes when they perform that transcends the music but at the same time makes them the real deal if there really is such a thing.

"...in a way of service" - "giving rather than taking" - the beautiful thing about it all is, here is a man who does not only talk about it, he does it every night on stage: He gives his heart and thus touches the hearts of his audiences. He comes out on stage and the connection is immediately there - everyone is uplifted. You have to experience it, feel it yourself - human language lacks the words to describe it...

So glad to have caught him 3 times given how many places he's travelled . I caught him twice in my capital city and once in another capital city just a 3 hour drive away . Now we have to stay home and try to get Covid behind us so we can have artists travel again . Stay Safe Roger ! And family ...
