When it comes to anomalies in the watch world in terms of affordability, two watches tend to stand out from the crowd. One is the Vostok Amphibia, an automatic dive watch from Russia that will set you back only around $70, and the other is a Chinese-made chronograph with some interesting military history. In this video, we'll take a look at the Seagull 1963, probably the most affordable legitimate mechanical chronograph in the world.

Because half of the world fought in WW2. My grandfather and all of his five brothers fought in WW2, and my other grandfather was in the Army during Korea but luckily didn't have to fight. I did a couple deployments to Iraq myself, then worked there for a few years as a security contractor. It's not uncommon for people, or their family members to serve in the military, especially during WW2, that's why they are known as the greatest generation. Stop being so cynical and go outside.

The bottom line is this is just a GORGEOUS little watch with some cool history. Doesn't take thousands of dollars to put a little piece of horological joy on your wrist. If you put this in a line up with some of the heavy hitters costing thousands (with no brand markers on them) and let a non-watch person pick out their favorite... this watch would stack up. @@msbrownbeast i agree that it's a good deal, just slightly unfair to point at it and say that other column wheel chronos are way overpriced. swiss-made ones might be overpriced, sure, but they probably weren't manufactured with industrial-level optimization in mind. it's like asking why a seiko automatic movement is dirt cheap compared to a hand-finished patek...
@msbrownbeast
@msbrownbeast 10 ай бұрын
@@hoennnoodle True, the Swiss products are likely more precise, and obviously better finished. Also the namesake matters a lot. But from the point of view of value for the buyer, for the price of a typical service for a Swiss Chronograph (say a Valjoux 7750-based model, only a mid-end example), one can buy several of these Seagull watches. And the Seagull movements look great. No one buys these watches for fine horology, but if mine will last me 2 or 3 years, I would be super happy, and even if it breaks down before, that movement is still a wonder to behold. As for comparing Seiko to Patek (Oranges to Apples), I'm sure that the Grand Seiko products have at least as good (if not better) finishing and and certainly better precision than a similar Patek product and at a much lower price.

I just received my 1963 from HKED; Champaign dial, brown leather strap, acrylic crystal and exhibition display back. Very elegant looking timepiece and fits my wrist well. Compared to my Citizen Eco Drive chrono, I don't even know that I'm wearing it. Doing a 24 hour break-in of the movement now as in running the chrono portion continuously to wear in the meshing of the teeth of the chrono drive. Very smooth movement of the hands and winding of the watch. Glad I paid a little more to HKED for this beauty. This goes into rotation with my vintage Poljot Sturmanskie, Hamilton 1974 military issue hack watch, Seiko 7T62 chronograph titanium 200 m, and a Casio G-Shock Multi Band 6. I repair pocket watches for fun and will be doing the servicing on my 1963 when it needs it. Excellent content, beautifully shot video, and a calm and rational host from my home state. Very well done, sir.

Speedys are kind of overrated to me. I believe in building a watch collection that you believe is cool and unique to you. Chances are, not a lot will know what is really on your wrist; most others will not appreciate the Omega quality. However, this watch and others like it (ones that you find cool and unique), will most likely get more compliments and just recognition in general than a generic Speedy. I guess it depends what you are trying to achieve: are you looking for a time piece to enhance how you look, or are you looking for recognition from a $6000 watch? Nothing wrong with either, whichever makes you feel more confident is what I would go with.

Great review of a beautiful watch. You mentioned seeing what watch enthusiasts are wearing. The other day I took my grandkids to the zoo, here in Colorado Springs, and while sitting on a bench decided to do a little watch enthusiast observing myself. I decided to gauge just what percentage of people at the zoo were wearing watches, and what of what kind. This is wholly unscientific - simply anecdotal, of course. As far as I could tell, about one in twelve adults walking by was wearing some type of watch. In my first set of ten - I saw 1 sportswatch on a SS bracelet, 2 G-Shocks and 7 Apple watches. My second set of ten observed watches consisted of - 1 dress watch on a leather strap, 2 cheap quartz "designer" watches and (again) 7 Apple smart watches. The smart watches are definitely out there. The Omega Speedmaster on my wrist was pretty lonely that day... Needless to say, I do not think anyone noticed it. Am not a watch snob. Most of the time I wear my Casio Duro bought on Amazon. It was just a little experiment to kill some time.

Teddy, thanks for the video. With respect to your question, I have a couple Vostoks, and probably will never get them serviced, but then again, with their suggested service interval, and my rotation, I suspect they may last 30 yrs or more in good condition. It's like all the micro brands with NH35 movements. Why service when you can replace? Now more expensive watches, luxury Swiss etc, then service makes sense.

I recently started collecting watches again after many many years. This is the first watch I purchased. I don’t know exactly what it is I like but those blue hands and that dial face and those gold numerals and those bold pushers. I replaced the supplied nato strap with a vintage leather stitched strap. Mine forever.

Great little watch…luv it. Ought mine a few years ago when they were a bit cheaper as I recall. But that’s okay…I think they are still worth the $300 they want now. I guess you can get them in larger sizes now and with a sapphire crystal..or is it mineral? Anyway, I stuck with the more authentic smaller size and crystal. There’s always Polywatch…😁

I added one to my collection a while ago. It is an interesting piece with it's history. I also have a Longines heritage model with a column wheel chrono movement that is based off of an ETA movement specifically made for Longines that cost almost 10 times as much. Although the Longines is an automatic I still think this Seagull is a helluva value for what you get. I enjoy both of them.

Along similar lines, it would be interesting to see a video on Poljot P3133-based watches. There used to be lots of these available in many different styles 10-15 years ago, and now there are still a few online stores carrying several styles. It’s a similar movement to the ST19, albeit cam-based instead of column wheel, and like the ST19, it’s rugged and reliable. I have two P3133-based watches, one of the Russian ones from probably about fifteen years ago and a German Junkers that used the Poljot movement. Both are surprisingly nice watches for their low prices.

Thanks for visiting this frequently touted watch, Teddy. Clearly, there is variance in personal taste - but to my eyes, this is both a unique and quite a beautiful design - especially when you see it in real life. Value is a difficult concept to quantify in terms of watches - as they are so frequently aspirational - and this potentially adds to their respective attractions. However, I am sure many people who can afford something more ostentatious buy this watch because it has a history; they appreciate its aesthetics; maybe, feel they have joined a cognoscente of those who look past price tags and have no desire to impress others... One thing I woukd add -I have just left China after four years - and never-a-once witnessed a Chines person wearing this watch!

Got one second hand on ebay. Love it. Pictures and video dont do it justice. There's a luster to the face that just doesn't photograph well. The contrast of the hands is beautiful against that gold background. Then there's the hours of turning the chrono on and off while staring at the movement. I'll pay whatever they want to fix it if it breaks. It's become one of my favorites in my collection.

These can be made pretty cheaply because the tooling costs have been paid off for years. Venus sold the tooling and blueprints to the Chinese in the ‘60s as fully-depreciated assets. The Chinese have used the heck out of this tooling ever since. Any cost they paid to acquire the tooling has long since been recovered in terms of watches “sold” (hard to do this kind of accounting in a centrally planned economy!). When you see a watchmaker charge a premium for a watch with a bespoke in-house movement, a big part of that price premium is going to pay off the cost of literally making the tools to make the parts. Once those costs are paid, you either book higher profit margins or accept lower margins by dropping the price.

I have purchased one of these watches but it has a 1970's style blue face, white subs surround by orange and black lozenge shaped highlights. I have two of the sapphire crystal versions (an ordering error). Being a pilot I was initially attracted by their aviation history. I have a collection of Omegas and a Rolex but prefer to wear one of these incredible watches. The daily "driver" has the canvas strap and formal wear I use the one with a brown leather strap. Both are on par with my best Omega for accuracy. No scratches on the case or crystal after two years but had to have the secondhand remounted by a genuine Swiss watchmaker who normally only services high end watches who was impressed by the quality but suggested I no longer wear it when pounding engineering projects with a one pound hammer.

Sea-gull is making one most true to the original which is a 38mm with a solid engraved case back and hesalite crystal. All other variants in 38mm and 42mm mostly with sapphire crystal and exhibition caseback are produced under license from Sea-gull by other manufacturers.
