Many fans remember the 2005 Coke 600 holding the record for most "Cup Series" cautions. What many don't know is the infamous Busch race that set the NASCAR record 13 years prior.

It's a good thing he didn't! That car would have been beaten up at every corner. Hickory was a great track for beating & banging fenders though. It's rare to see now that tracks like Hickory had to share pit stalls. I think this track only had 35 stalls so that mean any car qualified after 36 had to share...

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this race and the next closest race were both on short tracks. It isn’t just that the track was repaved…it’s that the repaving happened on a track where drivers are more aggressive in turning and accelerating (vs braking) than on intermediate tracks or superspeedways. Very high slip angles, drastic weight transfer, and no traction - bad mix.
@kailahmann1823
@kailahmann1823 2 жыл бұрын
Also with the rather slow speeds being the shortest track on the schedule, Hickory was always good for a lot of cautions during the 1990s. Everythink below a dozen was a rare exception there. If you wreck there, you reorder and wreck again - on a big track your car is junk after the first try.

Is that the generation 5 cars after the wing was gone Race that set the second most cautions in the Cup series history at 18? The race had a foam cooler get dropped onto the track, NASCAR later ban the Foam coolers at tracks and all coolers at this track, fine they often fail after a year or so of use anyhow, but then later NASCAR during Brian France Sr era ban all coolers at tracks that people can't camp inside the track for the weekend and has since been relaxed.

As an F1 fan in addition to NASCAR, this race makes the 2003 Brazilian GP look like a classic which is saying something because the 2003 Brazilian GP was an absolute wreckfest by F1 standards, raced in absolutely terrible conditions. However the 2003 Brazilian GP isn't the worst race in F1 history as that honor goes to the 2005 US GP at Indy in which only 6 cars started the race due to the teams that wore Michelin tires pulling out of the race due to safety concerns and the FIA refusing to make changes to the track to make it safer.
