@@TsukiRaiki it's not the only part of "The South", naturally, Alabama, Mississippi, are as well to name a couple, but Georgia is probably one of the more commonly given examples of a "Southern" state in the US. Of course, if you're thinking on the country, not the US state, then yes, it's very much so not what I would think of as southern. If you're not familiar with the US and our general areas, there's "The North", which is generally just the states that didn't secede in our civil war, vs "The South" which is generally the states that did. The "North" breaks up into generally New England, which is the part that's East of the Great Lakes, and the "Midwest", which starts under the Great Lakes and stretches to slightly west of center of the continent. Yes, half of the Midwest is in the eastern half of the country. Don't ask us, we have no idea. Then you have the "West" and "Southwest", which is actually what you probably would guess the Midwest is, because it's the middle of the Western half and the southern half of that. And then there's the Pacific Northwest, that one actually makes sense, and just "California", which is in the Southwestern part of the country. The names of the regions of our country don't make any damn sense, I swear...

Maybe Walking Dead is fictional because Waffle House is real. Like, I legitimately can't imagine how many walkers it would take to overrun a Waffle House in full swing. And you know Rick, Darryl, and Michonne are going to be in there somewhere. There's literally a Darryl in every Waffle House in the a.m.

I specifically remember that a Waffle House near me had a driver CRASH into it (The car was half inside the restaurant) and the workers continued to serve the customers that stayed- Secondly, the driver, who had a heart palpitation at the wheel, was SERVED FOOD like he hadn't just crashed into the resteraunt. It was closed for two weeks for repairs then reopened. They kept the front bumper of the car and had it fixated above the bathrooms. Truly a Waffle House win.

I have a chronically ill child, so we spent many a long evening in the ER. Most times we were cut loose in the very early AM, so when they told us we were being discharged once they had all our paperwork, we would call ahead for pick-up at the Waffle House. Burgers, hash browns, drinks, all delicious; wandered in looking a mess (sometimes in PJs), no judgement, just a friendly smile, always left a good tip. WH definitely has your back (as long as you don't mess around, per the glorious song at the end).

"We gotta go somewhere special." In my head, I'm always, "But Waffle House IS special. To Me." I've been to these lil diners all over FL, in GA but outside of Atlanta, and in Alabama - and it doesn't matter if it's 6am, 6pm, 3pm or 3am. Food is usually pretty standard, servers are the kind of people who're ride-or-die, and if you trash talk the wrong person you're gonna get your ass beat and aint no one gonna say a damn thing. I unironically love this place.

What would the expectations be for employees during a disaster? Are the employees were paid well for it? Especially one like Katrina, since I'd assume their own homes and lives were badly affected by the hurricane as well. I'd be pissed if my house was flooded or worse, and I was expected to go to work at a fast food chain to 'be there for the community'. Who is there for the employees?

I was a cook at Waffle House for a time in my early 20s. All told it was less than a year, but damn I have some memories. I used to get off work and be getting drunk on the couch while my roommate got ready for work... at 7am. I fought several customers. I was in 1 all-out brawl. I got into god knows how many shouting matches with customers, I also got high in my car in the parking lot w/ some of those same customers. If you ever need to "find yourself" do so by working at Waffle House, you will learn *so* much about yourself and what you can actually do when needed. Also, when you're getting off 37 minutes late because 1st shift overslept it is SOP to pool money with the servers and dump like $20 into the jukebox to play "Waffle House Christmas" on repeat as you're walking out the door... they wont be late again!!

@@Softbee13 LOL waffle house really was a trip. one time an old lady had a seizure and threw up all over the lower bar area, fire fighters and ambulances were called. she was fine ultimately, and we literally only blocked off the booth that got the puke in it (i cleaned the puke 😭) the rest of the waffle house went about business as usually. literally people eating like 5 feet away from a seizing puking woman. and this happened on a weekend morning, and for those who don’t know; weekend mornings are BUSY for waffle house. to the point where most of them will have someone who’s only job is to stand at the door and take the ‘reservations’ as people come in and have to wait. they’ll also serve coffee to people waiting. so it just added to the chaos and people didn’t turn away or leave despite puke being all over the booth and floor. my waffle house was also held at gunpoint but it was during the night shift, so I was not there at the time. whoever did it fired a few shots in the ceiling and the last time I went there (years after this incident) the bullet holes were still there. last I heard, it was a coordinated inside job with one of the employees too. some other fun waffle house tidbits- the servers manually price the items on your tickets (and are expected to do it by knowing the prices by heart. like you are not suppose to use the menu to price your tickets because it ‘takes too much time’) and then they manually do the math to add in tax and all that. so if you notice that your regular order is always a different price, that’s probably because the server misremembered a price and did it wrong. I accidentally over charged and under charged people basically daily. they audit tickets every month or few months to see just how bad the price mess ups are, it’s nothing crazy and usually balances out for the most part. (like I would accidentally overcharge someone by $2, but then in the same day accidentally under charge by $2 so the company was like whatever). also if you’re a server or a cook you basically learn a second language. the cooks have to learn ways to ‘mark’ the plates before they cook while the server is calling (so like if I called an order of scrambled eggs with hash browns, they would set down a specific sized plate and put a tiny piece of hashbrown at the top to signify hash browns and then a particular sauce packet at the bottom facing a certain way to signify specifically scrambled eggs. this is a very bare bones overview) this is so they can look over at the plates they have set up, and remember exactly what they’re cooking. they even have marks for things like “no onions” and for specific cooks (like medium, rare, well done). different marks would be like different sauce packets meaning their own meat, or placement of the items on the plate meaning if it’s a meal or a burger or something. also it’s been years since I worked there so this is all from faded memory lol. then as a server you have to learn a specific way to ‘call out’ the orders so the cooks can mark the plates. you go in a certain order, and you use phrases and terms to shorthand the process. it’s all created to be very fast and efficient but it’s so stressful until it becomes like second nature lol. as a server you literally take a 3 full work day class where you just sit and memorize everything. it can be intense.

While there adding extra flavor to the Waffley scene, we witnessed two groups of apparent rival prostitutes and their respective pimps having an rap insult battle that escalated to weave-ripping, all while either a drug deal or a foursome was going on in the men's bathroom. About 4 years ago, I dated a canadian girl, and she came to visit America (the states) a few times. The first time she was here, I took her to a waffle house. She almost marveled at the idea because she had heard so much about waffle house but never seen one. It was a short walk from our hotel, so we went. The table we had chosen was a booth style and had a family of 4 seated at the connected booth. Within 5 minutes of being seated, one of the 2 men seated behind me started having a heart attack in the middle of eating a steak. An ambulance showed up very quickly and they took the guy out on a stretcher. She never wanted to go to a waffle house again.

As a Katrina survivor I cannot tell you how vital Waffle House was following the storm. An employee at Waffle House collapsed once. Ambulance was called. She was conscious and they helped her sit on the gurney thing to wheel her out. Literally as soon as she was in the parking lot she jumped off, ran over to her car, and peeled out of the parking lot. All in full view of customers and her co workers through the front windows. We all just stared and looked at one another after sped away. Like that was almost a great plan lol.

@@Zanophane_GamingReally good for the tight quarters. Boiling grits or the ever-present pot of Lo-Melt make for excellent napalm, the dishes are really heavy and shatter well into long spear points, and there are bacon weights as well as handy little cast iron skillets. The one I worked at favored full-length heavy chef's knives, maybe 16", and also a steel about the length of your forearm that weighed maybe two pounds. The drunken brawls go down in both and a lot depends on location. Plenty of sleepy dead Waffle Houses and Denys out there in the middle of the night but the ones near any club or bar scenes are like some kind of arena of drunken stupidity.

This channel is what KZfaq was meant to be. The early youtube vibes combined with the production value, it's just... it's beautiful.

I remember Katrina... That waffle was the most amazing thing I've ever eaten. There was a time when the human race came together, and my goodness it was at a waffle house.

I have vague memories of being at Waffle House but it wasn’t after Katrina, or was it? It wasn’t in Louisiana though I know that for-… man I was 7 at the time I don’t know.
