You all mentioned that Tribal was one of the most common archetypes for the expensive decks, but I don't think the expensive versions of these decks are the tribal versions. Almost all of the tribal commanders you mentioned are cEDH commanders. Edit: I should watch till the end of the video.

Tribal can get quite expensive though by its self. I had a slime foot deck that got pretty expensive by the time I built something new. Mostly because of cavern of souls, doubling season, and craterhoof. Was dirt cheap when first built it though.
@jacobjensen7704

@@joshr408 that can get expensive, but not to the level that they're talking about here. The tribal versions of these decks tend to be significantly cheaper than the cEDh versions because of several very notable exclusions that drive the price of the deck up.

There’s no tribal cedh deck, that simply does not exist... Sliver queen is no a cedh deck, just a really expensive casual one.

Najeela is NOT a tribal deck and runs absolutely zero warrior support cards, it’s just a tempo deck with a bunch of one card autowins lmao. You maybe at most run azra mindblade I guess, but no horns or banners...

Re: adding to the cost of an initially built on a budget. I started playing EDH '09, and went wild, building a bunch of decks, all on the cheap. Eventually found Niv-Mizzet in '11 and built it as budget. Budget cards, like $8 for a Wheel Of Fortune. I've been playing that same deck since then, and nine years of improving a deck makes a difference. This is where it is nowadays: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/niv-mizzet-premium-parun/?cat=tcg_avg_price&sort=&cb=1575928413 A lot of the cards were picked up at nowhere near their current values. Like the Timetwister, which I got for $300. Or the Volcanic Island for $70. So it happens.

JtMS tends to do really poorly in any non-tempo formats. Which means all of multiplayer. He's honestly really bad, but not only is he bad, people THINK he is good, so they go out of their way to kill it instantly anyway. I'd recommend cutting it from all your EDH decks.

I just got back into Magic after being away for 12 yrs. I am so happy to see how well EDH is doing. But man am I overwhelmed with the choices that are out there. I've been focusing on precons mostly. Doing it to have card options as well as a base of sorts to have a direction to go in. I just got the Atraxa precon and I can't believe the amount of hate I've gotten about that deck. My very small play group has multiple decks that can go infinite. Yet they want me to play something else. So I watch shows like this to learn how to focus my decks to pull off the same combos they do but without Atraxa I guess. Lol. Anyways you guys and your website has helped me immensel. Thank you so much for all the great info.

When you mention Sliver Queen as a CEDH card, I think you mean The First Sliver. Sliver Queen wouldn't be touched with a 10-foot pole in CEDH. But it is a SLIVER card on a reserve list, and Commander players know what Sliver tribal can be, which can be seen with similar prices in the other lords like Hivelord, Overlord, Legion etc. Slivers are actually one of the few shining examples of how the strength of tribal cards can bring the prices up across the tribal board.

For the next challenge the stats I think you guys should look at Lazotep Plating, because that card is SO good but most people I bring it up to just have never heard of it. I use it in my Ephara deck because it does double duty by giving me a creature to draw a card and to protect my board and I.

So for Riftstone Portal it gives lands the ability to tap for white or green, as well as whatever it normally taps for or instead of what it normally taps for?

As for Tribal vs. Combo... I run The Ur Dragon, obviously dragon tribal. But i love to cheat out Omniscience with some draw engines on board and Warstorm Surge or similar effects. The deck can be kinda both combo and dragon tribal aggro depending on the draws...

I agree with Dana's point about a deck starting budget, and over time it inflates. My Xenagos deck started out at $50, and is now $400. I don't have a dual land in it (yet), but I have every other good RG land to support more colorless utility lands (and to cast Kozilek).

I would like to challenge the stats. As far as I can tell, there are only 9 decks with Brago, King Eternal as the commander who run Manic Scribe. If you get to blink him every turn, you get to mill your opponents reliably. And if you draw an absurd amount of cards, it is easy to get Delirium. So this little guy can do a lot of work and is unlikey the target of a removal spell. If you run Altar of the Brood and go for a mill plan, I would consider including him.

I'm pretty sure the most common theme among those most expensive commanders is CEDH. They're running the best cards no matter the price (or proxys of them) and are focused on power over theme. I'm equally surprised to see Sliver Queen being described as tribal and not combo ... most of the most expensive forms of the decks (confirmed by checking EDHrec for expensive decks) are running few slivers and really are just trying to combo off and create infinite mana, slivers and ETB's/death triggers ...

One thing I notice is that when I look at expensive Sliver Queen deck suggestions on both MTG Goldfish and EDHREC is that a LOT of people have uploaded the joke $28,000 Sliver Queen deck that Mitch did on The Commanders Quarters (it's pretty easy to tell which decks these are; they have almost no slivers but are also not combo decks, have no synergy, and are close to thirty grand as the video was a comic attempt to make an expensive and terrible deck). I wonder if this is messing with the numbers a bit? I mean, I'm not surprised that Sliver Queen would be on average expensive and on the high end as Sliver Queen combo decks (and even tribal decks) can get up there quickly but my own Sliver Queen combo deck is fairly highly tuned and doesn't break $2k. I really don't think you would be seeing Sliver Queen as more expensive to build on average as compared to other much more powerful cEDH commanders if it wasn't for all the people re-posting Mitch's deck TBH. Edit: Quickly glancing at decks listed as "Similar" to my Sliver Queen deck submitted on MTG Goldfish on May 30th 2020 I see 8 decks there alone that are just re-posts of Mitch's deck. All over $25k and running cards like Juzam Djinn, Zodiac Dragon, and Thunder Spirit which are just there to boost the decks price as none of them make sense in Sliver Queen (or honestly any deck considering what they are priced at). I feel like this has got to be messing with the EDHREC data to some extent right?

Najeela and Tazri are not tribal decks in cedh by any mean whatsoever, tazri is a fast combo food chain deck and najeela is a tempo midrange combo deck with a bunch of one card combos with zero warrior payoffs. Slivers is not a cedh deck, it’s pretty terrible and the 0 card combo is like 14 mana aka much worse than Godo and that’s mono red...
