In this video, I sit down with Rick Clunn to discuss how to pattern bass and the limitations anglers place on themselves while fishing. Rick gives tips and instruction on bait selection, retrieves, and tournament strategies to catch more and bigger bass. Hope you enjoy!

Great insight into the where what when why and how. Spot on about topwater and rippin. My two favorite techniques. Hearing frogs in early spring the night before I going fishing the next day always makes it hard to sleep. When you know, you know.

4:42 History was made at Kentucky Lake, when, on Apr. 9, 1993, Norio Tanabe, of Japan, became the first angler from another country to win on the BASSMASTER Tournament Trail. Clunn led the first day with 6 bass going 32 pounds. Second day was cancelled. Rick finished 3rd with 38-13, fishing a Storm ThunderStick.

5:55- The mention of Dee Thomas, who "invented" the Flipping technique. I drew him on his home waters of the Sacramento Delta, again on Meade in Nevada and fished many events he was also in. He's still around and still fishing, but he's in bad physical shape, which saddens me. Dee was a joy to be around, even when he was kicking your butt. If you don't know the Delta, it's like a maze and it's easy to get lost in. Right after we left the ramp, Dee picked up a structure buoy and threw it over the top of the levy we were idling along side of. Maybe an hour later, after all sorts of twists and turns, he reached down into the water and picked up his buoy and put it in the boat. All he said to me was, "It's real easy to get lost on this water".

9:55- you're asking about new new methods of catching bass with commonly known lures. I was taught to worm fish with a pre-rigged Carolina worm rig and a worm inflater we used on night crawlers. Then came along the "new" technique called a Texas Rig. Then came along a "finesse" thing they called split-shotting. I got out of fishing for a long time because playing musicconsumed all my time. Not too long ago I quit playing music and have picked fishing back up. I'm having to learn everything over again because somebody cameup with this Drop-shotting thing and someboey came up with this wacky rigged worm, and theres naill weights and ned rigs and square bill, flat-side crankbaits to mention a few. I've had to learn a double uni-knot, an FG and an alberto, a miller knot and other non slip knots because nobody uses mono line anymore. The point being, there is always going to be some one who adapts an old idea or device to entice bass to bite. The real question- the one you didn't ask- is, "will anyone be able to afford to go fishing?" In '89 my new major brand boat was a $20K purchase and Shimano baitcasting reels were easily under $100. Today an equal boat is almost $70K and a rod and reel can cost $700.

I just bought a used triton tr18 for $8500 with a Helix 12 at the console. No leaks, motor runs great. You can sometimes find deals on fb marketplace. Had about 3/4 of my tackle stolen while we were moving to our new place last year so i'm steadily replacing all that. I've yet to catch a bass on a wacky or ned rig where i fish, minus a pond. I throw a shakey head in a few places i fish and dropshot when water is clear enough for it. I'm not near any well known bass lakes so i mainly river fish and the oxbows on it. Lews makes a fantastic $100 reel in every speed you'd need from 5:4:1-8:5:1. First one i bought was 10 years ago and it's still on my cranking rod and as smooth as the day i bought it. You don't have to spend $700 bucks to have rock solid rod/reel and you don't have to pay $70k for a boat. I'll be all in on my boat with the upgrades i'm going to do plus gelcoat for under $20k and the same boat new spec'd the same way would run me $47k.

Great great interview. One thing struck me about number of random casts versus precision casts. It is electronics!!! Without electronics all casts were random so to speak. Now when you can video game fish you are targeting exactly where fish are. Almost makes fishing to easy I think. Just the way things are in this modern overly competitive world. Love the knowledge of the old school fisherman. I so wish electronics were removed from tournaments.... Don't think hummingbird,lowrance and garmin would like that though

More Casting versus More Graphing. I think this depends upon the body of water. No wonder that Mr. Clunn has had his most success on FL waters recently in his career. Shallow water makes graphing less useful giving the advantage to casting.

I believe a lot of this conversation comes down to electronics. When guys like Rick was making 2000+ casts in a day we didnt have the electronics that we have today and today's anglers who dont have the latest and greatest fish finders or do and just dont have the ability to learn it will probably still make more casts in a day than someone who does.

Even if you have been competitive bass fishing for 20+ years I think these videos are excellent . Winning bass fishing tournaments now days is so much more difficult for me . It's not that I don't do well ,I do ,it's the competition has gotten so much better the amount of weight it takes to win has literally gone up here on my home lake especially. 10 years ago this time of year 11 lbs would. Win easily now days your going to need 15 lbs - 20lbs some of the increase is from the lake just doing better but without a doubt the skills of the angler's is the main reason.

Mr. Clunn, I haven't been fishing nearly as long as you, but I feel I'm there with you with high percentage casting during my fishing sessions. By the time I'm finished I'm totally spent. The thing about this is it's an enjoyable style of fishing as well as exciting. I've tried to slow down and go off shore to fish but this seems totally boring to me. You're the legend and much respected, good luck with evolving in your fishing styles.

In the sport of fishing I have learnt; through experience, we should never rule anything out or assume we know what's happening with nature. Fishing is a very complicated task and there are many variables in nature that affects and contributes to our failure and success on the water while fishing.

Don’t you think as more fishermen go to scanning and marking brush piles and fishing them that those fish will react to the pressure and it may take a combination of both structure and shallow water, will it take both have to be the key to winning. I am with Rick on find the habitat and high nutrient areas you will find bait fish and Bass.

i got a question about topwater for ya. it seems like to me frogs are the most popular topwater even in open water. ive always leaned way more on a popper because of the treble hooks and hook up ratio being higher. any thoughts on that ?
@coltonn31
@coltonn31 3 жыл бұрын
You cant work a popper in the same places obiously; in grass mats, thick brush etc. But you wont have a higher hookup ratio if for some reason they like that frog profile better then the pop-r. Try a LFT frog trailer hook along more open banks and sparse cover

Staring at one with little knowledge of what you are looking at is downright demoralizing. I don't blame you. But if you understand what you are looking at and how that applies to your fishing, it eliminates sooo much wasted time casting to nothing. I would rather know that there are actually fish that may bite where I am casting versus casting to a swimming pool with zero fish present.
