I’m seeing a lot of comments about not being able to get to a short serve if you’re this far back. Here’s a few things to consider. 1: You can adjust the position I’m recommending based on your speed level and the quality of your opponents serve. The main takeaway needs to be that you position yourself in a way that you never have to step back as a first step. 2: Positioning yourself further back can actually help you get to shorter serves because we are starting forward when the serve is hit. If you start closer to the line you have to wait til the ball is hit to to decide if you’re going to move forward back or lateral and then will have no momentum to get up to a short ball.

As a beginner, the main thing I got out of this video is to get to kitchen asap after return of serve. The other day I was playing against a guy who had a lot of spin on his serve and it was killing me on the return. I finally shortened up the distance some and got to the ball sooner to just get it over the net. But I did so and knew to continue to the NVZ. Again, main thing I got from the video is to get to the kitchen after returning the serve.

I am 83 years old and my return of serve strategy is as follows; If the serve is deep, I return deep rainbows; if the serve is mid-court, the return has less arc; if the serve is short, I hit a top spin drive between my opponents which most frequently catches them off guard not expecting such an aggressive shot from an old man.

Just wanted to say I tried these techniques today in a tournament and even though I made mistakes by not returning deep enough all the time, it still improved my ability to get to the kitchen (i was 1 step slow a few times on my shorter returns). Returning with forward momentum and using a shorter swing in front of me versus a longer swing actually worked out better for most games. I also found my balance and reaction time to be much better approaching the kitchen. When returning, I stood back 4ft+ off the line (angled) and surprisingly was faster and seemed more ready and engaged to get to the ball. I was worried players would serve short seeing me back but when that happened it just got me to the kitchen faster and put me on the offensive more quickly. Snagged 2nd place using these techniques. I'll try them again tomorrow! Keep the videos coming!

John-your vids are among the very best in terms of game analysis and skill development. In my opinion, I think it should also be noted that driving the ball on a return gives you less time to get to the kitchen than a return that has been chipped or with a little loft. As long as the balls are going deep, you're good to go!

I stand with my back touching the fence or back wall of the court then move one foot forward. On most recreational courtsI, that puts me close to where you recommend. I also find that if I hit my returns slow and with slice spin, I have no trouble getting to the NVZ with feet set and ready for whatever third is coming my way. I get a lot of strange looks, so thanks for the reinforcement!

Hitting long loopy returns is almost like having a cheat code that few people use. I hit backhand 2nd shots with side spin and forehands with top spin or little spin. They have to generate their own power for the 3rd shot drive and the bounce from a loopy return seems to move them back a step. All this allows plenty of time to get to the NVZ which is the entire goal. I used to enjoy trading baseline drives with the server but that is a 50/50 proposition at best. Getting to the NVZ while they are at the baseline gets me to 60/40 or better advantage.

For those of us who had a one handed tennis backhand, I think I think a deep backhand or forehand slice return (chip and charge ) is more effective then any flat or topspin returns in normal playing conditions at a 4.0 level.

I've been practicing this technique the last few months since this video came out and it really works. So many opponents try to short serve when I'm standing so far back, but with the forward momentum, I get nearly all of them, plus a free trip to the NVZ line. Opponents hit way more serves short or into the net trying to be clever than serves that I can't get to. It messes with their heads. Got to watch John play at APP Sacramento this past weekend in between my own games there. That was fun.

Works great with a machine. Positioning yourself 6' back from the baseline invites the server to do a short shot to the outer corner just beyond the kitchen line. I've had this done to me and done it myself. The receiver doesn't expect this and has to run like mad to get the ball and usually doesn't make it. I've also had servers (especially lefties) spin the ball so that it lands in this corner and heads extreme right. Impossible to get. I'm usually within 2' of the baseline. If it comes deep, I just back up and hit a lob return to their baseline. This shot gives me more than enough time to get to anywhere on the court, which usually is not right to the NVZ. If I'm at the NVZ the other side just lobs in back over my head to my baseline. If we are moving forward through the transition zone, a high lob 3rd can usually be hit out of the air.
@buffal1000
@buffal1000 Жыл бұрын
Agree 100%. Even if you then barely do return the short serve, it's a low to high return, giving your opponent a nice opportunity to slam his next shot.
@thomasscharton1299
@thomasscharton1299 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree, John, about not crowding the baseline. I also think it's smart that you take into account player mobility in deciding on how deep to stand. Too many tips ignore that. But I wonder if beginners and not-advanced intermediates have the skill set to consistently/effectively execute the stroke moving forward like this. Intermediates and above should manage it, but, realistically, it's still better to hit the ball with less drastic movement on your part. The rush forward complicates everything -- seeing/judging the ball flight, getting your court positioning (+footwork) right, and getting the stroke itself right with the extra variables inherent with movement. So, this sounds like a good option if you have the skills. But if not, I say stick with a high floater deep to the middle as the best return. You'll get to the kitchen every time, you may create confusion for the opponents (who's got this?), and it puts the onus on the opponents to hit a good shot from the baseline. LOTS of mistakes are made trying to generate extreme pace on a slow ball. LOTS of mistakes (by the average rec player) made going for 3rd shot drops.
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball Жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas, I would definitely agree with the points that you made. Positioning is going to depend on level/ quality of opponents serve/ and mobility. In general I wanted the main takeaway to be to not stand in a spot where your first step has to be be back away from the court. If you’re doing that you’re going to struggle to get to the line even with a high floaty return. Always allow enough space for forward movement.

@johncincolapickleball Жыл бұрын
Yeah, good question. For every other shot I would agree with this. As a matter of fact I’ve got a whole video on the subject of slowing down and pausing before each shot. The return is the outlier though. It’s crucial to get to the kitchen line behind your return so the risk reward is worth it. By taking a more compact swing and using your momentum to create the power you can get to the line quickly while still keeping a high level of consistency. Hope that makes sense.
@rjsophia3712
@rjsophia3712 Жыл бұрын
@@johncincolapickleball Also, you’re hitting a return of serve off the bounce. All other returns may or may not be hit out of the air. Using a split step helps you prepare for the shot. But with a serve, you know it’s got to bounce and, more importantly, you know the serving side also has to let it bounce before sending it back. If you return with a deep loft, they can’t slam it back ‘unexpectedly’ from the baseline.

Yeah, I see that quite a bit as well. I don’t know if there’s enough there to warrant a whole video but the basic idea is you should be on the baseline or maybe even a step behind when the opponent is returning. I don't know if it's been asked already, but on return of serve(2nd shot) can you just drop the ball in the kitchen . Or is it a rule to return the ball behind the kitchen?
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball Жыл бұрын
You could drop it short. It’s not a rule that it needs to be past the kitchen. However, you wouldn’t want to do this because then you’re bringing your opponents to the bet and giving away your advantage.

You can always adjust you position if your having trouble getting to short serves. The main takeaway needs to be to put yourself in a position that you never have to take a step backwards to return a serve. You should position yourself that your only moving forward.

I have guys in my rec league who seem to do nothing but practice their serve. Their repertoire usually includes a short serve with massive side spin that hops sideways with basically no bounce at all. I'm tall and I have decent wheels for my age, but I have to prepare my legs with a couple of deep knee bends before receiving the ball in order frog hop hard enough to get these at all, and this from toeing right up to the white line. One of these guys said to me: I've hardly ever seen anyone get that when I hit it perfectly. Yeah, I lifted the ball with the tip of my paddle four inches off the floor with my arm at full stretch and my legs at full gallop. You can't cheat much, because he can generate the spin in either direction, and his mechanics are low and difficult to perceive. When I do get to it, he's completely screwed, because he has to hold the baseline, and if he does that, I'm just going to drop it short, at a nasty angle. I only have to do this twice, then he abandons his silly short serve business. A lot of rec players have no hope at all of coping with an elite short serve from your recommended standing position. Maybe some of the butter-soft indoor balls also have something to do with this. Also I think on outdoor courts, there are too many confounding variables to be using a low percentage tool like this one.
@afterthesmash
@afterthesmash Жыл бұрын
Well, now that I watch the rest of the video, I'm definitely going to try this. What I hadn't factored was starting the run early. I know the pros don't do this, but some of the rec league players serve with massive side spin that generates a huge kick to the side when the ball lands, including balls hit deep almost to the baseline. Maybe part of the solution is to be prepared to hit the ball extremely low with half-volley if you suspect it's going to kick hard off the floor, perpendicular to your established momentum. Or maybe I should play more often with opponents who practice any other part of their game.

I did go out and try standing 6 feet back from the baseline for return of serve, against a bunch of grizzled rec veterans who were determined to prove they could short serve until I gave it up. First observation: Holy smokes, did I ever gain the net fast! Second observation: It's a bit of an art form deciding how hard to launch at the time the serve is struck. Third observation: If you're being short served and the ball has enough kick to jump sideways, getting your initial line of sight in the right place really helps a lot. I was having more success anticipating the adverse kick when I was running pretty much directly toward the ball, on the ball's line of flight. Fourth observation: I had a bunch of my service returns go right through the paddles on the other side, because they weren't factoring in my forward momentum at the time I impacted the ball. This was in some other games against lower level rec players, who aren't great, but are good enough (normally) to never miss the ball entirely. Fifth observation: Once you prove you've got the wheels to exploit these short serves, they will stop testing you pretty quickly. But you need good wheels, and you need to be able to hit soft, angled, accurate chips from the top of your socks at a dead run. It's not that hard to do, especially if your opponent is frozen behind their own baseline for fear you will hit the ball much harder. The accuracy required is moderate, and the failure mode is not too severe. I was already getting the hang of this in my first test session. Meanwhile, my opponents were dialing in short serves with a sideways kick, landed to both front corners of my return-of-service court. The arms race was inconclusive. But honestly, I'm already facing their best stuff (from the short serve department) and I've barely dialed in my own technique. In the long run, this can only go my way.

Depending on mobility, where players stand may need to differ. Most set up too close I agree. The idea on position at return is mostly about making the first step lateral or ideally forward, never backward. Allowing less mobile players to learn to short hop the ball at or near the baseline is important to their success. The pace of the return needs to be related to the ability to get to the kitchen. Setup, first step, pace of ball, speed of player - all work together and the return isn't over until the player is at kitchen line in a stable position.
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball Жыл бұрын
Yep, that’s exactly correct Kyle. The main takeaway should be to position yourself in a way that your first step never has to be backwards. If you’re playing a weaker server you could be further in.

In rec play If I stand that far back awaiting the serve, I will get a player to barely get ball past the kitchen on their serve. POINT OVER!! It happens a lot unfortunately. And more times then not in rec play opponents ain’t good enough to land the serve very close to the back line where I would be tied up from hitting it back.

I think the fundamentals of PB are changing a bit. I was taught to serve deep but make sure the ball lands in, so don’t aim for the lines. I was taught to return deep to keep my opponents back allowing me to move up to the kitchen line. That was fine for a while but lots of people are pretty adept at placing a hard drive serve or a spin serve very close or on the sideline just beyond the kitchen line. When standing to far behind the back line it is very hard to race up to get those short balls. I was told that those types of shots are high risk but lots of people seem to make them with ease.
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball Жыл бұрын
If you are starting your forward momentum at the right time you should still be able to get those short wide ones pretty easily. This is where almost all pros/high level players stand and you can watch hours and hours of footage and probably never find a clip of someone getting aced or having trouble returning a short or wide serve.

@@johncincolapickleball maybe it’s just us 65+ folks that are getting too slow to get there (ha ha). I do notice that when I am playing younger people, like my 20 year old son, his reactions are so much quicker than mine. If I don’t place my shots perfectly (which is more common that perfect placement) he easily gets to them. I do find that many 65+ folks are pretty good at pace and placement. Thanks.

Yes the returner is trying for a deep return and stands behind the baseline so they do not get jammed. I always wonder why the server does not move back 3 feet behind the baseline after serve in case the returner is successful! Or is it a deep return hardly ever happens is the truth?
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. I’m usually about a step behind the baseline after the serve. The reason you wouldn’t be further back like a return, is with a return you know you’re going to the kitchen line 100% of the time you can get full momentum towards that. As the server moving forward is dependent on whether or not you hit a good 3rd shot so you can’t really be just moving in no matter what. Hope that makes sense.

If your opponent has good mobility, a short serve just doesn’t put that much pressure on them. Just invites them up to the kitchen line faster. Of course, if you are playing folks with limited mobility, then yeah, it would work.😊

Short serve is death in advanced play. You might catch somebody by surprise sometimes but if they're advanced players they'll watch more intently and move up rapidly, have great shot placement opportunity from a short serve, and then they'll be completely prepared at the line in ready position for your third shot drop or drive or whatever.

Standing 6 feet behind the baseline is absurd. You’d never reach my shallow serve. As far as the opponent hitting a deep serve snd backing up, learn to hit the ball on the rise like any decent tennis player.

Please delete this video Immediately! I don't want my opponents to know about it:) I have always known about returning and getting to the line. I am quick, so I thought I was doing ok. On a slow day, I might return a rainbow to give myself more time. I never thought about the hitting technique until this video. i implemented and it quickly became muscle memory. This makes it much less effort. if I forgot my technique, then it was obvious and I would reset my brain on the next return. From a worst case perspective, if I return short, I am still getting to net or nearly there, and I am ready to defend. Without the technique, I could be stuck back with my short return. So my mistakes became much less bad. thanks
