Thanks for the transparency and I appreciate the detail. Not only is the AW4 inexpensive, it is bullet proof behind a 4.0L........providing you keep it cool. I had one in my 1998 Cherokee that I installed a large aftermarket tranny cooler. I like that the AW4 has a drain plug in the oil pan. At 50k miles, I dropped the pan and changed the fluid and filter. Afterward, I would drain the pan every time I changed engine oil (every 6k miles) and refill it with 2-1/2 quarts fresh fluid. I used Mobil Dexron/Mercon III (non-synthetic). I sold that Jeep with 296k miles in 2014. Last I heard (about a year ago), it was still running the same transmission. As an FYI, the plugs are softer than the pan. I replaced the plug about 4 times in 240,000 miles. They are probably still available from Jeep.

I'm sorry I haven't responded to this sooner. Everything you said about the AW4 is correct and I still really believe that going with the AW4 with a .75 overdrive would work, but I also think the 6r80 I'm going to will end up being a better transmission for the Kubota V2403 engine as well.

Torque convert lock up is something to consider as well. When it is locking up and such. Not locking up would nuclear meltdown the Trans in overdrive. Would be cool to lock it up on those steep decents you mention when using the engine braking

@DuddiesAdventure
@DuddiesAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
@@RustyAutoholicGuy My other 10% would be picking the correct size Turbo for V2203, Did V2203 come in anything else besides reefer trailers, can Kubota Swapper make adapters for any transmissions, and lastly fuel mileage, but I don't think you can answer that yet since you are still testing and tuning. Thanks in advance for any help on those questions!
@RustyAutoholicGuy

@@DuddiesAdventure so KubotaSwappers can make an adapter for any transmission almost, I got him to make an adapter for a 6r80 6-speed Ford automatic transmission for my next build. The 03 series engine came in tractors, generators, and marine applications. The only tank I have tracked partially I got an estimated 25mpg, but I was running less boost and no intercooler. I'm trying to get my TJ to 30mpg highway is the goal.

I have a Audi with that k03 on it and I can for 100 percent say that 25 outta that turbo is a bad idea it's way out of its efficiency range and is making a huge amount of heat the max I would have seen run and this is at the top of efficiency is about 18 psi unless you are running some kind of injection like water meth or something Now that said this is a great build and I plan on doing one but if I was gonna run anymore boost that the 15 psi I would swap to a k04

Next question how many different diesels you gonna throw in this thing? 😆 Seen some of your tdi videos good stuff, why not use a manual trans?
@RustyAutoholicGuy
@RustyAutoholicGuy Жыл бұрын
Honestly I don't know. I know manual would solve some issues, and I do know how to drive a manual, did so for years, but for the style of wheeling I enjoy, automatic is the way to go. That being said if this last ditch effort with the AW4 doesn't work, I'll be swapping in a NV3550 5-speed manual since it came with the wrecked TJ Rubicon I just purchased.

How much $$$ have you spent on adapters that you never used? The setup you had with the AW4 would have been fine if you just went to the junkyard and got some 4.10 axles.
@RustyAutoholicGuy
@RustyAutoholicGuy 3 жыл бұрын
So the original adapter was like $725 ish, it's been two years so I can't remember. Going to 4.10 axles is possible however because of the Right Hand Drive all the axles have their brackets installed in a mirror location, so I would have to cut and re-weld all the axles, again doable but not a simple bolt in swap either. Ultimately I went with the 6r80 6-speed automatic because I had that adapter already for another project that is more than likely changing because of some length issues that I've been running into with the design.

I had moved my engine forward 6.5" inches so I was able to make up the length of the 7" doubler with also installing a super short SYE on my NP231 so my rear drive shaft was around 14.25" inches long.

Nice setup. How do you think it would stack up against one of the Mitsubishi factory turbo diesel jeeps?
@RustyAutoholicGuy
@RustyAutoholicGuy 3 жыл бұрын
I've always been interested in the CJ-3B Jeeps from Mitsubishi, I've seen a few for sale here in the US, I believe they are around 85hp and I don't know the torque of the top of my head, I would guess under 200ft/lbs, I know they get good fuel economy as well. Without having driven one or worked on one I can't say anything definitive however I will say having a diesel engine from the mid 2000s vs a diesel engine from the 70s/80s I imagine this Kubota is quieter, cleaner and produces more torque than the engine that comes in the Jeeps from Mitsubishi.
@LesSharp
@LesSharp 3 жыл бұрын
@@RustyAutoholicGuy yes, the naturally aspirated ones ended up with about 85bhp and 16kgm. The direct-injection turbo version bumped that to 96bhp and 21kgm. I put some info together on those here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bKmZqbaHvrXMm6M.html I’ll look into Kubota availability for an eventual replacement if my 4DR6 ever dies! I’d be more likely to find a marinized engine here. Was the direct injection unit available in marine trim?
@RustyAutoholicGuy
@RustyAutoholicGuy 3 жыл бұрын
@@LesSharp I don't know honestly about the marine trim. I will also tell you mine is IDI not DI, which means I'm down on power but I can run bio-diesel which is a bonus, there are a few places to get it which cost less. I'll check out your video tonight!
