I would like to share this 2-pot solo cook kit I recently put together incase there are others out there whom are, like I was, looking for a compact 2-pot system (mainly for pour over coffee....and yes, rehydrating meals).
It's main components that make it possible are the
TOAKS 550 Pot Light - www.toaksoutdoor.com/products...
TOAKS 550 Bowl D103 - www.toaksoutdoor.com/products...
They nest super snug and keep volume and weight down.
I did make a vid about it but due to group rules guess I'll just share this pic here to demonstrate the size.
Note:
If you do go this route and intend to use a stuff sack to hold everything together but don't have an existing 750ml pot stuff sack, you'll have to get an aftermarket one as the stuff sack that comes with the bowl/550 will be too short once the two are put together in this configuration.
Kit Contents:
1. Toaks 550 POT Light
2. Toaks 550 BOWL D103
3. A titanium lid that I'm still working on as of the time of making this video
4. BRS-3000T or Fire Maple Hornet 300T stove
5. Mini lighter
6. GSI Java Drip
7. Scouring pad
8. Silicone pot grabber

Nice set-up. I'm still on the Toaks 750ml kit @ 15oz with the bail & lid, a Toaks spork, an MSR2 stove, an MSR piezo ignitor, an MSR 110g fuel can and a scrub pad, but I also carry a 450ml cup (+2.7oz) that I pack with my food so it's effectively taking up no space in my pack besides just displacing the thickness of the cup itself which amounts to practically zero.

Another variation to this kit is the D103 bowl + 750. Allows for more space to store the stove and some little condiment containers. But your kit sounds good too. Whatever works, works!

These bags are typically made from polyester, if I'm not mistaken. It softens and melts around 200+C (400+F). So if a pot was in the fire and the flames were licking up the sides, there is a good chance the handle wires would be above that temp and melt on contact. If just a gas or alcohol burner is used with a well controlled flame which doesn't touch the wires then it should be fine as titanium is a horrible conductor of heat and thus will be relatively cool.

I've always hated having to wait to finish my second cup before packing my pot and the small objects in it. Now I use a 420ml cup for coffee that nests a Smartwater bottle in a side pocket. It also serves as a water scoop, to mix flavor crystals, and makes it easier to put the water bottle back in place.
@BorealWilderness
@BorealWilderness Жыл бұрын
That's a properly good idea! My only concern is that the nasties carry over from scooping? ...and also (at least for me) my bottle's exterior is not exactly clean. I put it down everywhere 😅 But space wise that does sound very efficient.
@borealphoto
@borealphoto Жыл бұрын
@@BorealWilderness I rarely need a scoop or mix drink but it's there. Not having my pack half open with a bunch of small objects out is the main benefit for me. I also went from a plastic mug to metal so it can go on a flame. It does get dirty but it's easy to clean. I could always hang it from the pack, like the enamel cups of yesteryears.
@GeekfromYorkshire

@@borealphoto Also any Ti pot you can sterilize it by simply using over a flame, if no water in it then only briefly. That's one argument to keep to Ti bowls rather than say plastic. In the Toaks range the D103 fits outside D95 or inside D115 and D118 outside the D115 so make your desired 2 or 3 pot nested system.

What's the weight of the GSI cup? Is it the one with the handle? I did previously use the sea to summit collapsible cup but it was tippy due to the conical design and also it was heavier. For the lid to work on the larger, shorter pot: The most simple solution is to take a very small punch and make a couple of dimples from the outside of the pot, just below the lip, to make some protrusions. They don't need to be deep at all, and it won't add weight or affect the fit or function of the pots together. Alternatively, you could either get a sheet of silicone or a silicone O-ring that will fit just around the depression of the lid; this should increase the surface area on the edge to prevent it flipping into the fluid. The final thought would be to simply make a couple of dots of silicone with some RTV on the lid or pot, but this may impact cleaning (you could knock them off if the bond isn't tight enough to the surface). One final option would be to slightly deform the lip of the lid (maybe crimp a 'V' in a couple of spots around the lip) to also increase the surface size and once again preventing the lid from rotating. Thanks for sharing! I've seen some recent kits that have multiple nesting pots for a great price that might offer good solutions. Also, while I've been working to slim down my kit (a Toakes 750, 110g fuel, and BRS 3000T burner) I found that using the bottom part of my Esbit pot system, which is a natural wind-block and also allows me to use biofuel, fits perfectly inside the pot and allows me to use Esbit fuel tabs. This solution is more compact and lighter than the canister and works in all weather, and allows me much more room to store other things inside the pot as well. On my scale, the pot with a silicone ring around it, the orange Toakes cover, the lid, the Esbit pot stand, 4 Esbit tablets (in an ESD bag... they're durable and don't let the smell out), comes to a grand total of 244g (8.5oz). Fully packed, I load it with collapsable a Jetboil fork and spoon, a hot lips silicon lip, a garden-variety bic lighter, a pack of instant coffee (though regular wouldn't be much different), and brown sugar and powdered milk, which comes to 393g (13.9oz). Of that, 103oz of coffee/milk/sugar are expected to be consumed, along with at least one Esbit tablet. Even with all that in it, there's still room at the top. Why Esbit tabs? I really love the compressed gas, and even alcohol options, but these work at any altitude (I live at over 7k' /2,134m) and typically go a good bit higher for adventure, and this also eliminates issues in extreme cold environments (I find myself doing more and more winter camping, which here can often be between freezing and 0F (-17.8C).
@walkerone9833
@walkerone9833 Жыл бұрын
Adding the dimples is a great suggestion. I did that with my Toaks 900 ml. pot lid to make it "snap" on good and tight some time ago. Just don't over-punch it. One on each side did the trick.I Always keep Esbit tabs for a back up. I ordered a ton of them some years ago when they were going for $.30/pc. Still good.

That can work as well but this arrangement is smaller than a 750...and expandable as shown. I get that some people find that metal to metal sound offensive...more than I initially thought tbh. But I'm fine with it. Also, if you wana keep this form factor but not have metal to metal, just flip the 550 lite and nest it in the D103. You'll get the same no-metal-scrapping-sound interface as with your proposed config :)

The lid from the D115 fits the D103 pot snuggly by accident, doubt from design, the inside of the D115 lid ridge fits snuggly the outside of the D103. Obviously the lid is hanging over the sides. This may not be ideal for your D95 550 + D103 550, but it works well in a different config - arguably better for cookign where stirring of food needs a bigger pot so not to spill of the 900 D115 fits within the D103 550 (which itself has no lid ) but that D103 550 can be used with the D115 lid to keep contents within such as when boiling.

The metal is only 0.3mm thick as it stands. Reducing the ID of the bowl would defeat the primary purpose of this kit - nesting. Problem solving is not stressful. Solving shortfalls/optimizing is half the fun of putting a kit together 🙂 Also, titanium is not malleable like aluminium or silver etc so "rolling down" (which requires specialty tools+ lathe) or hammering will not result in a clean result. Even if I wanted to go this path, I'd first have to remove (cut off) the rolled bead edge, heat and roll the new edge etc. which would be way more work than just getting a suitable lid sorted for the existing diameter. It can be cold formed but takes a lot more work....plus then there's work hardening etc. to deal with.... 😅

personally, I don't think size matters when it comes to gear. Weight, ok, but size, not really. The difference in weight when you go from one size to the other is so minimal. I get you "hikers" like everything to be crazy minimal but theirs's a point when you over do it, or in this case under do it. And the reason I put "hikers" in brackets is because I think if you speed though nature you're missing the point of being out their and might as well be walking on an indoor track.

There's a time and a place for everything. We have different objectives at different times. If you watched the whole vid, you'd have heard that I do have a 900 which I use when the walk it the point and I carry in food to cook. At other times we try to target certain miles. Size then does matter coz that ties into space which then which contributes to weight....or takes space from for other stuff. The 550 is more than sufficient for rehydration too so its not really compromising on function either...just that there's less margin. All the same I'm glad you stopped by and took the time to share your views.

It'll accumulate crud and also not be a permanent fix which will probably always be falling off. Am quite happy with my current set up :)

You're probably right considering the D103 has been out for roughly 4 years now. Just that I have not heard any in my circle nor seen a vid speak about this particular combo. Everyone talks about a 95mm diameter either nesting with a 900ml or 450ml (narrow cup). All the same, glad that you and your group are well clued in on this. Cheers :)

If you want a wood stove that nests in this set-up, the TOAKS STV-12 (Small) will work.

@@BorealWilderness Thanks I will check it out. I'm trying to find a simple way to heat up the watercell x for a hot shower if I camp on the road. Looking also for a folding pot that the flame from the stove won't melt the pot.

@@mathieutallard6328 how many liters of water are you looking to heat? The STV-12 is only good for small volumes, i.e. meal prep. I'd imagine showers need a decent bit more

@@BorealWilderness The watercell x is 4 liters. For fun, at home, under the sun, it heats well but on the road, if i full it up a couple of hours before camping, it won t work even if i travel only in the tropics ! The Sea to Summit folding pot looks great but the silicon has to be away of flames.....and i don t want to carry a gas tank for something i m gonna use not that often. I might camp more if i can enjoy a shower but still, in countries i travel, accomodations are cheap. But when i did camp, if i could had a hot shower, it would have been great. That s why i bought the watercell x.

I just looked at the product. It's made from 400d fabric. How do you intend to heat the water in it with fire?

You shouldn't rub metal like that, it always releases microparticles and you end up ingesting it, and then my friend is where the health problems that lead to hospitals begin.

Our cornflakes are magnetic (as is our blood) and we put titanium in our prosthetics for a reason - it's non-reactive. Microplastics however are definitely a problem (which we unfortunately still do ingest due to its presence in the entire food chain). Micro bits of titanium is definitely not a problem. As it's non-reactive it's like swallowing chewing gum or a seed. Just comes out the other end.

That's an alcohol burner and windshield. Not what this kit is about but it's an objectively nice design. What's the boil time?

@@BorealWilderness take a look at this video at 3:45 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ecVoiK921M-RmZc.html You got more space in your cook system. The X-Boil is one of the fastest alcohol cooking system. But time is not important outside in the nature.
