The concept of super spoopy area is similar to zelda phantom hourglass. Perhaps even inspired by or a reference. When you have no sand, your life force begin to drain away and die. You must collect sand of time to keep your hourglass going and keep you alive.

4:20 Dave it works "there" too it just seems that these "time-dispensers" only fill up your time to a certain limit. In the cases seen this far this limit seems to be either 5 or 10 seconds. You went in the "time-dispenser" with ~16 seconds. So the "time-dispenser" had to let those "excess seconds" run out before actually starting to work.
