The Most Corrupt Border Crossing | Cambodia to Laos by Motorbike

Жыл бұрынAfter visiting Kampot, Phnom Penh and driving hundreds of kilometres through the Cambodian countryside on our motorbike trip around Cambodia, we finally reach one of the most corrupt borders in Southeast Asia. The Cambodia to Laos border crossing by land is the worst rated border we have ever seen. Many people have had stressful border crossing experiences here, from scams, to paying bribes, to angry and rude officials, so we were nervous about crossing the Cambodia Laos land border by motorbike after hearing the horror stories. Let's see what happens when we try and cross the border with our Vietnamese motorbike...

-Blue card for motorbike
-US dollars to pay the visa on arrival fee ($40)
-Small passport size photo for the visa

It's frustrating, but they are actually right. You need a document of ownership. Only bc they don't care at some bordercrossings does not mean you don't need one. They will ask you for the documents at every crossing in Thailand too. It's just that a lot of border officials don't ask in Cambo, Lao or Vietnam and foreigners think that that is the legal way. I haven't had problems between Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos but had to ultimately sell my bike at the Thai border in Vientiane. They wouldn't let me in cause it wasn't registered in my name. Safe travels guys.

@@Uwek.5775 In Cambodia when you buy a bike from your friends, you make sure you get the credit card sized ownership document and take it to the transportation dept. and it is like $60 to get your picture put on the ownership document. To many people in Cambodia driving motorbikes and being to cheap to change the document into your name.

Oh what memories when you drive in those narrow trails through the villages! I was there! I did that tooooooo! Your videos are getting me excited again about those good old times...I totally get that feeling of when you shouted “Sadaidee!!!” once you re-entered Laos! Feels like home, no? Customs official is 100% correct. You cannot just take a vehicle across borders without any documentation. Most countries are in their right to refuse entry without an ATA Carnet or temporary import certificate. The reason the customs official was so concerned about the bike coming from Vietnam into Cambodia was because that bike should not be sold or change ownership in Cambodia. it's to prevent crime where criminals steal vehicles and bring them illegally across the border to sell. and also, any vehicles sold must include the tax payment to the government. This is the same process that you would expect to happen in any western country.

To be honest, you need papers for the bike when you enter a country. Eg if you ride from Thailand to Malaysia. Even if it is a gift there must be documents.

Ikr. It’s a standard procedure. Show some documents first before saying that the immigration officials are trying to scam them. If they’re still making it difficult for them to cross the border after presenting all the documents, then that’s a scam.

Of course. You must have registration documents or they won't let you in. For some reason, Cambodia seems to be an exception to this rule.

Have crossed this border twice on a honda win (with the viet license). Technically you should also have a customs document from when the bike entered Cambodia, and also get one when the bike enters Laos. Great to hear it is still possible unlike entering Thailand by bike.

i might misunderstand the situation but i think hes not quite wrong if the bikes from another country you should always have legal document as where you bought it under what name or motorcycle rent when you pass a county under different license plate without legal documentation can look bit suspicious if we think about it

I'm sorry your experience wasn't smooth at the border crossing. Unfortunately, it is relatively common for people here to make some extra money by charging an extra "fee" (essentially a scam). You're right, you can always argue but we always just give in, let them have the extra money, they don't get paid enough.

That stamp scam has been going on at least since the 90's. People pay as much as $5-6 USD per person so I think you guys got off cheap actually especially since you had the bike too. I know a friend paid $5 back in 2001. Happy Travels

I past that border 16 years ago, that time i got the Lao Visa in Thailand, and they wouldent even let people go on the bus if you diden't have a visa on beforhand and there were no Lao consulates in Cambodia at that time so i had to plan it in advanse. But it was a fun jungely drive trough the jungle at som hellroads of mud and 18 hours it took to the border. Crosset it and went to Don Det that time. So i see that the roands are much better now :)

Have been to Don Det 23 years ago, and just before and after covid. Travelling became much easier on these new roads and the new buses.

You were able to cross but we've heard that it's much more difficult to do so nowadays and people pay agencies to get their bikes across the border on a boat.

Be careful in Laos if you don’t have proper documents for the bike, and if you stopped by police they might ask for it, you may get in trouble too. Unless the bike is registered in Laos. Welcome back to Laos! 😊

You managed to ride a motorcycle with no registration papers through the border. Count yourself lucky. Most of the time in this region, even with registration papers customs eitjer makes your life difficult or refuses your vehicle entry, especially true in the case of Vietnam and China. I've been denied entry into Vietnam from Laos with a car that had all the right papers but customs just didn't want to allow me in. They came up with some new BS rule that only Lao drivers can drive Lao plated cars into the country. Had you gone in the opposite direction, from Laos to Cambodia you would also have been denied entry with your motorcycle. Good to hear you made it through, but next time you really need to ensure you have all the documents required.

To legalize border crossings you both need passport for person yourself and Motorcycle documents which is shown that that vehicle is yours(simply like motorcycle passport). If you don’t have documents like this, Police could report to local as Stolen vehicles and you are done!! You should thank them for not report and let’s you crossed to Laos. Unfortunately, you are accused them for being corrupt🧐

I went from Thailand into over the friendship bridge . My thai lady friend had I d card to go over bridge, everything fine . Coming back from Laos to Thailand over different bridge they wouldn't let her cross . Said it had to be same bridge. They were going to lock her up unless we paid 3000 baht .or rather I paid 3000baht . Not sure if I was scammed or it was true .hey ho .

Defiantly should have the document of ownership including the history of sales... As for the 2 bucks!! Pay it, it's South East Asia and grease allows the wheels to move more easily. It's normal for the officials to bend it theor way for a small charge, Jesus, you guys ask for problems

Its Crazy that you think they are trying to scam you when youre on a foreign registed bike thats not even got paperwork in your name. Your riding a totally illegal bike. But they let you in anyway😅

You have to carry documents they don’t know about the title of your motorcycle it’s might be stolen or convicted crime ! I think the officer did really nice to you guys if he investigated about your motorcycle brought from Vietnam without any documentation you guys properly ended up in jail. Your $2 can’t help you from arresting,what are you trying to complain about?

Great post. Indeed, I sense a certain amount of entitlement here. Every overlander knows you need a registration title and often that's not all, in order to cross borders in your own vehicle. A friend's vehicle can be brought across but must be accompanied by a power of attorney authorizing the vehicle is driven by you. Lacking a title is a serious offense especially when crossing borders.

What u do , it is not legal at all . By law , u crossing into Cambodia u need vehicle Registration card and driver license. And leaving to Lao also the same , plus insurance . What u did is risking yourself , pls understand arguing won’t help if u don’t have any evidence to show u bought it.I would not recommend what u just did.

You sound as a very unexperienced travelers. Never argue with a custom officer certainly not in a crossing border. You do not dictate the laws, and certainly even if you are right there is a way to express it. You sounded like a spoiled little kid. Not because you have got the motorcycle as a gift, not because your ''friend'' didnt have to go through certain legal steps etc, allegedly, you are not supposed to have all the legal documentation that is needed. Not because an officer at some crossing border didnt ask you some papers means he did the right thing and that will be applied everywhere by everyone. You have been lucky that gentleman let you go in a very easy way...very easy. Shame on You 2!!!!

All the borders in Cambodia are corrupt. Having said that they were 100% correct. Motorbike a Customs NOT Immigration. Maybe next time research better.

The Laos side charged them $2 also, we have had it at a Thai and Vietnamese land boarder crossing also. But it was only $1 ten years ago, extremely low level stuff.
