I really thought there was no way that LoueMT was getting back into that game after RecoN took 4 relics and had a solid trade line setup, but hats of to him for splitting RecoN's army in two and then taking great trades in the middle, then doing the clean up.

One cool thing I've found fighting trade with the Byzantines is that the Expilatores upgrade for horsemen works for traders as well. +2 to damage and 20 gold per kill is a pretty sweet bonus, surprised Loue didn't get it.

@caesarsa1ad yeah, hippodrome may have been a trade counter. But the problem is, with biz, your strongest units are spears and stuff. So like, he got the landmark to make a few horseman, but they didn't do that much, he basically made the one attack with them, and I think spears would have done at least as well for it

wdym he didnt do that much? pretty sure he loses if he doesnt go that landmark (at least more likely since u'll have to go fast castle as well and probably lose map and 2nd berries) he bought himself SO much time from these horsemen for himself to get age up hippodrome isn't a "good" landmark that will give you value for long, it gives you tempo and map control. nothing counters anything from byz before age 3 if the enemy is age 3. gulams will just destroy ur base with camel lancers Also i was expecting for the gulams/ lancers at the start to just run into his base and make maybe 2 lancers for the horsemen raids @@ChaseAnderson5k

@@nationarmy2514 his horsemen couldn't find any worker kills until he dove under the base. The hypodrome saved him 150 on a stable, but I figure another production building could have done the job fine. In terms of "defense" and "time", he gets extra free units from oil from berries and he can produce spear archer. It may be "worth" in this match, idk, but any time you pick hippodrome you're choosing a landmark that looses value instead of a landmark that gains value. With hippo, you can mine berries fast, to produce a lot of say longbo horseman quick. But mid to late game you're buffing the biz units that aren't that good (calvary) instead of getting a permanent eco boost

One the luckiest spawns for me with the Byzantines was when i had 2 berries close to each other and i put the winery between them. Massive boost to oil and could spam longbows and spears while on 2 tc.

I didn't see anything from byz that was helped by hippo instead of winery after the first raid. Still won, but even the pros have a hard time utilizing it.

the first line of Varangians were killed by Ghulam's lol, at the end it was over due to eco. that trade was raided by loueMT.

something i didnt understand about Recon is, he already walled up halfway up the map, why not put a gate and then supply the rest of the "area" beyond the walls with outposts? Right hand side would still be vulnerable to raids but he could keep most of his army around the objectives on the left side of the map - trade, two sacred sites, and resources. Obviously easy being 20/20 in hindsight but throughout the game i wondered why he didnt do that as the traders would be protected half the route

something that would be really nice to see in this game is if defensive play is more viable, if theres a way to more reliably defend your base if you want to opt for early farms or whatever, so that its not just down to a tight-knit difference in army or economic output early on. Landmarks obviously help for those Civs that have access to a straight up defensive structure, but still.

Recon chose greed, no walls, no spearman, I think you can mount up a better defense. Losing 5 out of those 8 extra vills doesn't seem like a good choice.

Outposts, walls, early army... hell, even an early age3 keep can keep you going when playing defensive. If anything, the meta is kinda going in the direction of 2 tcs + extended age 2, it seems

The trade formula does put like, an unreasonable level focus on map randomization for trade. Simply. - The reward requires a perfect post placement. - The security of it is challenging to maintain without natural features that enhance the safety of trade, as the placement of your trade posts is near 100% predictable. This makes trade extremely binary. Either its so overpowered the downsides of your traders getting killed a lot doesn't matter, or its so risky that investing in build orders for trade is relatively rare. It shouldn't be difficult to write a trade formula which makes a broad range of trade post and market positions viable, but sticking with the strict math we have now makes the game design challenge of having balanced trade incredibly, infuriatingly difficult. Or you know, when we don't kneecap the developers to having one universal feature on all maps, just kinda no. Edit: Just to be clear, the fixed seed trade post placement I feel would be sort of ascinine, so I want a formula that makes the bad parts of the system go away.

Well people go for Max distance trade posts all the time but that’s not necessary

@@Schrogs Technically, but while there is still halfway safe gold the % yield on what you put into the units to gather resources is far higher for the low risk option. It doesn't mean they are useless, but, marginal, which is a lot harder to talk around in an internet argument.

@@WalrusJones185 yeah I wish they may trade a little bit better for shorter distances. I just tested it out in a game and my traders are making 15 gold and they’re about halfway across the map from trade post

@@Schrogs So, I don't care about gold/trip, as that's a very bad metric and the sort of slippery slope that can lead to very unfortunate and unproductive arguments on the topic. Explaining how the risk reward, %yield, and gold per time could be adjusted takes a lot more math, but, more accurately sees where things are breaking down.

if they did trade better for shorter distances we'd see a basically 2nd tc tha costs 150 wood, and if u manage to get some map control ppl will make it max distance with shit ton of value basically uncontested @@Schrogs

why is it every time I watch a drongo video, you always find one excuse to say that Ayyubids are OP in some specific way? wasn't the huge nerf on the casino not already enough? and now you're complaining about the eco wing? so what will happen next? request for so many nerfs to the point where the Ayyubids are just a weak civ? I think you should maybe consider the balance of the civ currently as the eco wing counter to the casino/previous nerfs, not to mention there are not that much good options for the Ayyubids anyways. the biggest advantage the Ayyubids have are in the early stages, they are not a civilization in the long term, unlike the Abbasids.
