This is how I record vocals lately. Definitely helps me not waste time on comping afterwards and gets me better individual takes. The only downside is sometimes the flow from part to part can get weird sometimes if you're trying different stuff on each take.

Hi Chris, great tips in this video. I used to record multiple takes of the full song and try and comp the better bits afterwards. It was frustrating because after doing the whole song a couple of times. My voice was getting tired, and the intense singing parts of the song, even if I did 8 takes, none of the 8 takes were acceptable, for the most intense singing parts. I did one song after I saw this video, and it went a lot better. Because I could rest my voice a bit more before the more intense parts. And concentrate more on them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

This is exactly how I do it! But I’m not a great singer and often writing the lyrics just before singing them to get something down and get used to singing and recording but I’ve done your free course and it helped so much! Will definitely be doing the next course soon. Thanks chris!

How can you record so loud without clipping? Do you have a hardware compressor/limiter that pushes the signal down before it goes into your DAW?

That's very cool but I have some concerns: (1) is it normal for pro music to have this many vocals and (2) it seems one should use different mics with different parts for sonic character as well as to prevent buildup of a single mic's frequency response in the mix. Please advise.

it seems you add the effects before and then sing? i want to do this but keep hearing its bad because you cannot tweak those pre effects after. But here it seems like it works good. Can someone further elaborate for me?

I see no problem with it, but are there any other downsides besides you cannot tweak them after?

Although there are effects on the vocal tracks, the wav files are still clean. This means you can remove the effect plugins and still have a dry unprocessed vocal. Hope that helps 🙌🏽

I'd love to record facing my computer but my fan is too loud - so, what do you do about that apart from moving further away from the computer!?
@Karlush
@Karlush 2 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about your computer fan, then get an M1 mac. They're dead silent. If it's your ventilation fan then just switch it off during recording.

This is great Chris - I just got myself a boom arm for £12 off Amazon and tried this - much easier and got a vocal take I was happy with within about half an hour whereas before I'd be at the back of the room messing about for hours and then trying to comp it all together. I thought recording over my desk might be detrimental to the vocal sound acoustically but actually can't notice a great a deal of difference to doing it at the back of the room against a bass trap - I think the tiny bit of dryness you loose is more than made up by the fact you actually get a performance down and finished and quickly! Thanks again.

Chris, Thank you. I've been doing the million takes and hours of comping the best one. This work flow improvement should save me a ton of time. Seems so obvious, but apparently not for me.. One question I've always heard that you should double or triple track vocals. Is that true for verse sections too. Obviously, this was a chorus part and you were going for a big gang vocal thing. Love your content. Thanks for creating this and help us bedroom producers.

I can't drive 85 :) haha... Ya the single record track is GOLD mainly for that reason! I get so turned around with switching tracks it drives me nuts when I 'm in the groove trying to lay down lots of layers.

Yep, just put a big reflective object behind the mic🤦‍♂️
@MDMAx
@MDMAx 2 жыл бұрын
True, but aim your mouth away from it :D If you think that 1% background reflection will affect the recording put a towel over it when singing. And a pop filter. The point here is to instantly edit your voice, and if the pc's sideways or hindered, you'll spend milliseconds doing whatever to switch to it after every recording. You're not losing the flow and excitement of the inspiration.

Agree - I record in a vocal booth with my laptop just to my right. Works great. But I do like the idea of just recording to one track all the time and then moving takes to other tracks. Great idea.

Sounded fine in my recording right? You just have to get the room right! And the mic placement with respect to the computer. Cardiod too for the right rejection!

Well... I guess the rest of the world is doing it wrong. 🤷🏼Maybe this approach works for YOU but I'm skeptical that most singers will have any interest in recording vocals while sitting down in front of a computer, constantly futzing around with a DAW. I certainly won't be doing it this way.
