Performed by the one and only Christian Lindberg as the finale to the Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto. Listened to the multiphonics about a billion times and still not sure if it's right. Those lip trills to the high F though... what an absolute virtuoso.
Full video recording here:

Back with another play along video next week, hopefully.. if my baby decides to sleep at all this week!

Hey folks. Apologies, I rushed this one a little and made a few mistakes. Clearly my ears need a clean out, thanks to those who pointed these out. I made this channel to challenge myself and improve my skills so thanks for keeping me honest!

Halfway through I had a feeling that some of what Lindberg plays resembles the cadenzia from Korsakov trombone Concerto, but I was like "naaah" I just project, because that is the cadenzia I listened and played the most. Then, at the very end I realised that the whole thing was Lindberg's own cadenzia for the same Korsakov piece.

Good memory! Also, I love how he quotes different melodic phrases from all three movements in the one cadenza.

m.11 those are all major 7th jumps, not octaves - so that first one should be B3 up to Bb4, then Bb3 to A4, etc

Amazing player. Thanks also for the transcription! As for the multiphonics, might I suggest that the trombone part (not Lindberg's humming) is simpler than what is scored? It sounds to me as though the trombone is more or less alternating between a low held E-flat to an F, changing every bar until the G-flat fermata before the time signature change. I don't believe he goes up an octave in the first bar of the multiphonics when playing the E-flats either. The resulting harmonics of the two hummed notes, both the 10th (G) and the 12th (B-flat), give the impression that the lower note has changed too -- the sound of the 12th (compound 5th) is so much less complex than the 10th, which I think tricks the listener/transcriber into thinking the voicing of the chord must be 'lighter' in some way. I, however, hear the low E-flat remaining under both the G and B-flat. Also, I think the penultimate note is a low Pedal C, a fifth higher than the scored F - the arpeggio before it implies an F7 and although it would be logical for it to descend to the root of the chord, I think Lindberg instead pedals the C (F7's dominant) prior to resolving upwardly to the B-flat when the orchestra rejoins. Let me know what you think - I'm always interested in hearing how other peoples' ears hear music differently! Thanks again.

Thanks for a really great breakdown. It's so hard because as you say, the notes you hear are not necessarily being played. I think your reasoning is spot on, I changed my mind so many times, I even got out my trombone to try a few options. At least the sung part was easy.

Hey i have a quick question. Whats a good trombone brand or moddel that you would reccomend for a college audition? My private lesson teacher just threw it out there that i might need a new one by the time I try to audition for college. I havent really talked about it much I just wanted to get some reccomendations to research a little! I love your content it keeps me playing consistently. Keep up the great work!

Hard to say, so many options. I got a medium bore horn because I wanted to able to play jazz, pop, commercial stuff with a bit of classical so for that I love my Yamaha YSL640. But if doing mainly classical/orchestral stuff then Bach or Shires is a great choice. You could wait until college and see what they recommend, good luck with the audition!

Thanks for your work and sharing it. It's amazing trombone playing. From a musical point of view I don't like it to be honest. And it does not fit into this concerto. Rimsky Korsakoff's own cadenza is just fine.
