I’ve had multiple surgeries (more than 12) over the years in various hospitals and surgery centers. My last knee surgery was performed at a surgery center since it was only a cleaning. I was so happy when one of the nurses came in to put that warning machine on me. It’s amazing. I prefer it over having warm blankets stacked on top of me.
@deathbycheese8502 ай бұрын
I like that too. I hate feeling weighed down with multiple blankets, that aren't really that effective. It's why I can sleep with just a blanket and a hot water bottle., even in winter, and I sleep outside.

They just give me warm blankets. Like five or six of them normally but yeah I'm violently shaking when I come to normally.

Then you are medically shivering and there are medications to help with that
@margaretwilkie36372 ай бұрын
I'm the opposite--I have a regular body temp of 99.6-101. When I have surgery, I tell the OR staff in advance to not put any blankets at all on me, warmed or room temp, and just a cool sheet over me. And to pass my wishes on to the RR staff, too. If I get hot, I get restless or even combative. I spent years as a recovery room RN, and I agree with how wonderful my patients would feel with their nice heated blankets! It was such a blessing, one more way we could make our patients comfortable and pleased. I am retired now, and I miss those times. ❤

My child needs scope surgeries & biopsies every 6w (for a severe type of EoE). Part of their immune issues are a severe/life-threatening histamine response to cold, so for *every* scope surgery the Anesthesiologist at Children's meets with us in Surgery Prep and sets up the IV warmer, the air blanket, and gives her special (autoclaved) mitts, socks & a beanie to wear under her surgical hair net. He jokes about putting his cold hands under the warmer too (because OR is frigid). Thankfully, this is Canada, so we weren't bankrupted by my child's rare disease needs.

i live in america and as someone who’s been a chronically ill child it didn’t bankrupt my family either… you aren’t denied insurance here if you need it..
@kpl-CA2 ай бұрын
@@twothousandandchew every single US child in our specific rare disease community died by age 16. Most never even made it to 10. Their families were wiped out financially with *millions* in NICU, ICU, surgical & specialist costs. They all declared bankruptcy. Most also divorced. Most also lost their jobs because their child's medical needs were too costly (yes, that's *common* in money-grubbing US companies that have no regulations keeping them *decent*). Most US families with severely ill kids can't get access to the newest, best meds unless they try to buy them illegally in Mexico or Canada. Unless they are 1% rich - with a spare 10,000,000 for treatment. The kids with the *same issues*, but in the UK, AUS, Europe, Canada, etc are all doing well. I'm not going to trust FauxNooze bots/GOP fanboys who *do not have severely sick or disabled kids*, and who've never even been outside their country, and have no clue how the rest of the world works.

I sure was freezing and I got a special surgery blankie that I refused to have removed when getting picked up to my room. So they laughed and left it (all one-time-use only anyway, sadly so). And unlike my previous surgery I did not end up laying in bed shaking like a leaf, with my teeth clattering and too tired to lift my hand for the nurse button. And my surgeon came by in the deep night, to check in on me to find me in that state. So he wrapped me into another blanket and put on the heating in the room. It was the freezing cold IV fluids that sent me into a shiver back then.

Trips me out that to have a fairly simple surgery, they take all these precautions and anesthetize us, but at the dentist’s office, they straight poke us, cut us up, rip out our teeth, ream out our jaws, drill into our jaws, etc., all while wide awake with just a local. Zero pre-care or after care. Last time I left the oral surgeon, I was literally in shock. Drove home by myself, in pain, feeling freezing cold, cold sweat. Checked my BP and it was 90/62. My normal is 117/70. 🤦♀️

Oh yes! When you're cold that thing is awesome! I used to think heated blankets were the best and I still love those. But I think of my 6 surgeries in the last year only one of them used that and only two of them did I feel super cold afterward. So I kind of would like to know. The difference in the anesthetics used as I'm guessing that might have played a role.

I've never seen a warmer machine, Dr. Cava. I have had more than one surgery and after one surgery, I woke up on the operating room table (following foot surgery) and after I came to, I remember everyone was standing around me and no one was speaking, just staring! Finally, the head nurse asked me if I was cold and I realized that I was and said "yes." Right then, she ordered heated blankets be put on me. So, following that experience, I realized the OR was cold when I was wheeled into another OR. I remarked that the OR felt cold and asked the surgeon why. He explained the room was kept at a cooler temperature to keep the room sterile I then told him about my last experience and asked for my chest to be kept warm with a heated blanket and they complied. I felt better. Advocating for myself! ⭐️

I already have jacked temperature regulation. I have a narrow goldilocks range. If i get too hot (which takes very little) I cant cool down easily. Once, ended up sitting in the floor of shower with the water turned to freezing and it took about 30 mins to start even reregulating. Always need to sleep a long time after getting overheated. (Inner thermostat broke after the 2nd general anesthesia surgery i had. There were complications and what should have only taken 45 mins took over 4 hours. Before that surgery i loathed cold and thrived in heat. After, it flipped. Completely. Cold didnt bother me, i could walk barefoot in snow, but i could no longer handle heat. Nearly 30 yrs later, still the case. I always have to remind that i dont need heated blankets or anything like that. Dont know if it was tbe anesthesia that broke it for good, or something else surrounding the surgery did.

I only have those in only couple surgeries. My recently surgery on my elbow. I ask the nurse to please do not put the warm air. Heat brake me out in a rash. And then I got other nurses putting warm blankets and heating my other arm because they can't find a vein for my IV. I end up having my IV on my foot, because I comment growing up, nurses put the IV on my foot because they always have trouble getting my veins. I don't though they actually was going to do it. And actually hurts less that in my arm or hand.

Okay, so I really hope you see this because the doctor on the floor thought I was just imagining things. I have undergone multiple electric cardioversions due to chronic intermittent aFib. On the last two cardioversions I received, they had to do it twice, but after the first one, I woke up in between. I heard my ears ringing, a sharp pain in my chest, and the distinct smell of burning before going back under and coming to maybe 15-20 minutes later. I do know they don't keep you under for very long, but I saw your video about anesthesia and I had to try and ask your thoughts.
