Admiral Andrew Cunningham steered HMS Warspite straight into the lion’s den, gunning to corner the Italian Royal Navy in a fierce clash right off their own coastline. It was a bold gamble that promised either a sweeping victory or a catastrophic defeat.
It was July 1940, and Italy had just entered the fray, turning the Mediterranean into a powder keg. Cunningham was determined to deliver a knockout punch to the Italian fleet, looking to shatter their resolve before they could pose a severe threat. Yet, he and his crew were about to encounter more than they had bargained for.
His fleet boasted the great battleships HMS Warspite, Malaya, and Royal Sovereign, along with the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle and a robust lineup of cruisers and destroyers. They faced an Italian armada under Admiral Inigo Campioni, which included six battleships-highlighted by the newer, swifter Vittorio Veneto and Giulio Cesare-backed by a cadre of cruisers and destroyers.
Cunningham wasn’t the type to flinch or even consider retreat; he was intent on instilling dread in the Italian sailors. As the clash unfurled, with the fleets still a considerable distance apart, he commanded the legendary gunners aboard Warspite to target the Italian flagship, Giulio Cesare.
The shot was virtually impossible by any naval measure-Giulio Cesare was 14 miles away. It was like hitting a flea across a football field. Unfazed, the gun crews meticulously calculated the trajectory, even accounting for the Earth’s curvature.
The 15-inch gun roared to life, the command boomed, and the air was torn asunder as the longest naval shot ever made streaked across the sky. Not only was a record about to be shattered that day but so too was the spirit and power of the Italian Navy…

My good friend Ted who served in the RN and RAN WW2 told me Cunningham insisted his gunnery officer was always escorted wherever he went ashore, the reason being he was that good and usually hit the target quickly, Other ship Captains wanted him and they were not averse to press gang methods hence the escort ! , perhaps lower deck gossip but its a good yarn ! Ted survived a long lance torpedo hit, they were closed up and it was his turn to go for a smoke, he went down from the gun platform and was smoking when the Japanese torpedo hit the side of his ship .The blast killed all the gun crew. Many people attended Teds funeral way back in the 80s a good man to all. AND a very good friend , He was our storeman and i kept telling him that picture of the Hood on the stores wall above his desk was mine !!! it disappeared one day no doubt it hung on Teds wall at his home. One day just after he retired he came home fell asleep in a chair and never woke up.

The Long Lance's took a heavy toll on Allied cruisers around Guadalcanal. It took far too long for our flag officers to establish battle plans to survive the deadly torpedo attacks IJN destroyers could unleash from great distances, day or night. But while that was going on it took some pressure off Australia's war effort on New Guinea.

Reminds me of Willis “Ching” Lee Decided you wanted to use the ships guns basically as a sniper rifle, First realizing the manual that came with those guns from the supplier was wrong “off” so he basically wrote his own. Then he trained his crew To be able to literally anything within the first shot or two. After that during one engagement he noticed they were outnumbered and another ship was going to make it so he course corrected, leading those attacking ships to start chasing him. at the last second he made a sharp turn, sinking one ship almost immediately within two shots both hitting.. From a bored kid that was too intelligent for school, getting in trouble when the teacher took his tobacco throwing it in the wood furnace one too many times. He filled that pouch with gunpowder, the teacher threw it in the furnace and blew it up, to An Olympic gold medalist “ that finished early and decided to shoot pistol for fun taking gold in that as well” to battle ship commander World War 2 had kicked off, American New we were eventually going to end up in it. They sent Ching Lee to bureau of ordinance because they knew he didn’t have time for their bureaucratic bs. Covering a whole bunch of stuff that they didn’t want to send out to the Navy because they wanted to be 100% effective. For example, the radar ordering them to be put on every ship, but they told him no due to manufacturing shortages. He told them he’ll buy them from Britain. They immediately complied. They were sitting on a EVAP system that purify water. If you don’t know the story of this legendary gunslinger, You should look him up! Especially if you like military history, WW2 etc

I honestly don't think Italy's heart was in the fight. I think Mousseline was pushing them to fight with someone they didn't want to and against someone they saw as allies. Thus leading to lack luster battle performance on their end. Had they been on the allies side I think it would have been the other way around. That is just my thoughts though and has nothing to back it up.

Modern day ships line of sight targeting lasers are able to target a vessel at 100 miles even though the target is said to be 1815.85 meters below the horizon. Once you understand that it is called sea level, you understand being able to target the ship at 14 miles is not a problem but hitting a moving target at that range is damn good shooting.

distance to the horion increases with the height above sea level of the observer. an obsever with eyes at 5feet above sea level will see the horizon at approximately 2.7 miles, at 50 ft approximately 8.7miles away. Consequently an observer with eyes at 50 ft could, given good optics and a flat sea, be able to see an object 50 ft high above sea level up to a range of 17.4 (i.e. 2x8.7 ) miles before it dips below the horizon. Hope this explains. No need for thanks. Send Laphroaig.

You are not doing any service to the Royal Navy by making out their opponents to be cowards. Contrary to the old joke, the book of Italian War Heroes would not be a very slim volume. Think of the Italian gunboats which defended the German troop convoys during the invasion of Crete, the human torpedo attack on the battle fleet in Alexandria, and so on. Their commanders were understandably cautious when they realised that British warships had radar, theirs did not, so that they were fighting blind in night battles.

Your pronunciations of names is a particular annoyance/amusement to me as a natural born speaker of English - and also one with a fair amount of military and wartime knowledge... For example, it is HMS War-SPITE, not War-spit. The "E" at the end tells you exactly how to pronounce the word! And there's HMS Mal-ay-ah, and not Mal-eye-er! And then there's Admiral Cunning-UM, not Cunning-HAM! Or the Italian port of Tar-ANT-oh, not TAR-anto... I wouldn't even mind so much if you didn't meanwhile get the Italian ships' names pretty much spot-on! And then we have the "allied" cruisers... I thought they were ALL British? Keep at it - and maybe watch a bit more actual (preferably British!) wartime footage with narration from the time - and I'm sure you'll get it right eventually!!
