Negative. PO comes from the French word “poussière” meaning dust. Yes, BR is mist, (brume) rather than brouillard, FG, which is fog. It can be confusing as some abbreviations come from French words and some from English.

I completed a course for a professional drone pilot couple of years ago, and we were learning how to read TAF and METAR, the ones that will relate to flying a drone, and I was surprised myself how many I actually remembered. I didn't guessed about 6-7 here that I've never came across before like CAT, IGS, HUREP, WSR. That was a great video Joe! Stay safe.
@noah9130
@noah9130 4 жыл бұрын
Valio keys They seem to be using multiple abbreviations for the same thing. I have never seen SNW in a METAR or TAF for example. It's more common to see just SN. For me, the abbreviation of gusts is not GSTS but only G. If saw GSTS I would rather say Gresil and Thunderstorm...

@robhobsweden
@robhobsweden 4 жыл бұрын
So did I in Sweden. I was a glider pilot, so perhaps the term "ceiling" is more important to us, since we most of the time just fly up to the cloud base (VFR with no vertical cloud cleareance but ground visibility). ;) CAVOK is however not a good weather for flying gliders, we most of the time want 3-4 octas cumulus, with a high cloud base.
@florianmeier3186
@florianmeier3186 4 жыл бұрын
@@robhobsweden Well, no ceiling without clouds. I learned also "clouds and visibility OK" as meteorologist in Germany, but "ceiling" is more precise as there might be thick high level clouds even with CAVOK. Do you know, that our forecasting models are currently degrading due to lack of aircraft measurements (AMDAR/AIREP/TAMDAR)? So we are missing you pilots, crews and ground. We try to compensate by additional weather balloons and other quick measures, but it is not equivalent to 10000s of aircraft reports.

I don't remember what crash it was, but a while back the US NTSB made a post-investigation recommendation to overhaul the METAR systym. When the system was introduced, it took time (and money) to send individual characters, so a format was devised to compress a full report into as small a package as possible. Now a days, you can look at any teen girl's text message history and see that LARGE amounts of text can be sent quickly, easily and cheaply. its time to go to plain language METARs!!!

Becoming a cargo pilot about a year or so ago is probably the best thing that ever happened to you considering the commercial airline industry is in very tough times now.

Hi Captain Joe, I appreciate your videos and I am a big fan of your work. I'm the head of the luxembourgish meteorical service at ELLX and even if I knew all the abbreviations, it was a pleasure to watch your video. You explained all the abbreviations correctly but BECMG in TAF messages does not mean that the phenomenon will occur in that time frame, but that it will *change* to the significant weather *during* this timeframe. I'm sure that You are aware of that, because you explained it right at the beginning and then at the and you said "...the expected weather condition in that time frame". The next time you are at ELLX, you are welcome to visit us at our office and have coffee. Keep up the good work 👍

Good descriptive information Joe!! I'm sure you have come across this acronym... HLB..... Helicopter Load Bag.... used to use these in the fire service when we were on maritime emergency response.... sadly there were suspended four years ago.......

YES! After what you wrote, I guess you did not forget VIRGA, which I saw yesterday for the first time in years. I'm thinking of going cargo. I'm a regional FO nearing upgrade (after all this is over). Stay safe, make more videos!
