The Most Important Guitar Of The 1990s?

In the 1990s something wonderful happened that led directly to a resurgence of interest in acoustic music and the acoustic guitar in particular. MTV Unplugged!
Perhaps the most important of these “acoustic” concerts was performed by Eric Clapton and his band in 1992 at Bray studios - the resulting album would sell over 26 million copies worldwide and become Eric Clapton’s most successful record.
Clapton performed much of this concert on a 1939 Martin 000 42 which became the impetus for a long standing signature model - first a limited number 000 42 and then a standard issue 000 28.
In terms of longevity and popularity the Martin 000 28 EC model could very well be the most important guitar model of the 1990s.
I hope you enjoy this video!

EC has always been a personal guitar hero for me. At 10 years old I wasn’t a huge unplugged fan but with age I quickly learned acoustic guitar is pure and simple the real sound. So many use distortion and effects to mask the guitar and their lack of ability. Acoustics are the real thing and there is nowhere to hide. You either can make it sing or you can’t. This guitar is a holy grail instrument to me. EC will always be my favorite.

Lovely playing. I love these guitars. I'm lucky enough to own a 000-42EC. I saw them being built at the Martin factory, and decided I had to have one. The sustain is incredible.

@@ellenrik Thank you, I am. I have number 209 of 461 (the number taken from the LP 461 Ocean Boulevard). The original range of 000-42EC was actually Indian Rosewood, but due to popularity, Martin released a second set of another 461 but in Brazilian. These new 000-28EC (like Michael is playing) are superb and I love them, though the price today is not far short of what the 42 was 1995. My wife was not at all happy with me!

I've always dreamed of owning either the Eric Clapton 000 or the Mayer OM. Unfortunately, both are well out of my price range. However, when looking at Martins at a big guitar shop in Sydney, I played an M-36 and was blown away. A great guitar and well worth checking out. Still expensive, but much more affordable than the signature models.

Michael, I have #203 of the first 500 Martin 000-28 EC's made. I bought it new back then and I've had quite a few other guitars come and go since then, but I would never let it go. Love the guitar. Now almost 30 years old It's seen some miles and looks it with a few dings, scratches and a little checking on the finish, It's top has aged into a wonderful deep carmel/amber color and has that amazing dry woody tone older Martins are known for.

I ordered a 00028EC in early 2000 when I started getting decent pay Chqs. I was always a 1990s Clapton fan and it was one my first expensive guitars I ordered brand new and It took 10 months to arrive like a baby. Well, 24 years later i am still hacking away on it. It spent a few years under the bed as I had D15 martin. But when you play an open A minor on the 00028, your heart just melts. It has aged well. And the warmth from it now is next level. The one thing about is when you leave the case open in the room over night the whole room is filled with that beautiful Rosewood smell in the morning. It just an amazing piece of martin history. Many Takamine's and Yamaha acoustics have some and gone, but the 000EC remains with me. I agree with you, that this unplugged era prob saved Acoustics' and the Eric Clapton 00028 saved Martin.

I played a 000-28-EC at Willcutt guitars in Lexington KY about 15 years ago. It was the best sounding guitar I had ever played at that point in my life. It was one of those moments when the hair on the back of my neck stood up because I was hearing something that really resonated deeply with something in my brain....and I'm a mediocre player at best, but that guitar made me sound better. If I could have afforded it I would have bought it.

I bought my first Martin in 2017 and my choice ended being either a OMC28E or an EC model, I went with the OMC28E because of the longer scale = snappier tone for rhythm. It surprised me a bit. I spent 4 hours going through maybe 20 guitars and found what I needed. Today I would like to add a guitar with a little more volume and midrange, maybe a mahogany body. The OMC28E is very comfortable and make changing between electric and acoustic a breeze in a live setting.
