The last part really left a lasting impression on me. Everything was so similar between our situations, it feels like someone was able to put into words exactly what I’m feeling and what I was feeling. The mental stack of wanting to be good and the feeling of worthlessness can really drive you to ruin. Tbh I haven’t truly been able to let go of those feelings, but to hear someone who’s been through the same things I have say it to my face is absolutely eye opening. Thank you for giving me some hope, my grind for Master Rank will come to fruition soon🙏

One quick note, shimmies are used mainly for beating throws. It can be used to beat invincible reversals, but the whole point of a shimmy is to walk in and out of your opponent’s throw range to bait them into think you’ll throw them. Shimmies are strong because the core mixup of SF6 being a strike/throw 50/50 is why shimmies are so prevalent. It’s far harder to bait out reversals by just walking into your opponent’s face and blocking because they’re able to possibly press buttons. So to make your mixups as potent as possible for corner pressure, you can get a KD whiff normals at the end, and leave yourself plus enough to either get a meaty attack/meaty throw/ or shimmy. This is the core mechanics of a shimmy and your safest pressure generally. This is just a matter of semantics basically, but at a fundamental level shimmies are for baiting throws more than baiting reversals out. Anyway, aside from all that; I find that this is a good video for newer players in the FGC. I myself am not apart of that group of individuals. So I’m more loose in how I go about my practice. Like I never write down notes for things I see, or I never watch my own replays anymore. I just sort of wing it lol. As I’ve gotten better at the genre, everything just seemed to click for me; and there’s nothing wrong with taking notes to make sure you remember stuff. But the best advice is probably taking your time to learn and let knowledge sink in. Cuz the more you let things sink into your mind, or you gain understanding of a combo from taking a break after practicing it for a long time. It sinks in and you’ll develop a muscle memory as well as a memory of timing in your mind. Oh and finally about the controlling emotions, I find it really easy because I don’t strive to be the best player ever, or even the best of my friend groups. The truth is that ranked titles are basically meaningless and there will always be someone better to come along and humble you. So just be content with where you are in the current stage of your FG development. That’s the best way I find to control my emotions. Though that’s just me. I mainly like playing for the sake of playing with friends anyway. So I find it much more fun when there isn’t any form of competitive pressure or something as meaningless as a ranked title on the line. I for one have beaten plenty of master ranked individuals with my main character and on my main account I’m completely unranked. It means nothing to me at least. Anyway I’m yapping at this point, all in all; this is a solid video. And if you’re ever up for it, I’m more than willing to play sets. My CFN is DragonOfTheWest I’d like to play against more individuals and make friends. 😁

I like this guy...^_^ can definitely tell that you're newer to Street Fighter by how you use the terminology. What you're saying isn't technically 100% correct, but the essence of what you're trying to share is. I've been playing Street Fighter for a very long time and can say it's great to hear from the perspective of the newer players...😁

This is honestly some of the best fighting game advice I’ve seen in the last year that I have been on that hardcore grind to get better. Not only is it practical, but it is personal. Thank you for your advice and perspective. Time to step back and reevaluate how I approach SF6 to get out of diamond and into Master rank. 💪

The best thing I've done for watching my replays is I stream my games on KZfaq. Just gameplay. Obviously I don't get frame data and I have the downtime between matches but I never would sit down at my computer and opt to watch replays rather than play... So now I watch my vods on KZfaq at work. It's helped so much in just a week. I've also worked a lot on my anger re your last point. It never got beyond my reactions to the game, I never really carried it around, but I'm married and ranting and raving in anger even at myself or a game isn't really acceptable. It's also not who I want to be. I was like that as a kid too, getting angry at the game. Still working on it at 37. It's always great to talk about it so people know they're not alone. I've said these exact things, that the effort feels meaningless. When I'm not upset that goes away, I'm able to rationally see the change. But when I'm hurting it's really difficult. Great stuff.

nice video - i know that feeling as well. its very cliche but the key for me was learning to see failure as a good thing. Every failure is an opportunity to learn something new - we really can not improve in any area without it. Also people should know that these ranks don't mean a whole lot and people shouldn't put so much stock into them. The main thing I noticed after hitting diamond for the first time was that the players were still quite bad and only slightly better than the previous ranks. Only the pros are "good," we're all scrubs, just practice and have fun

Definitely true. Being “Master” is a completely arbitrary label and caring too much about reaching it is unhealthy, but I also think ranks as a whole are fun just for the sake of giving us gamers a lil goal to work towards. We like big numbers going up lol!

Great video......best thing we can all do is keep our calm, reflect on mistakes, and level up our knowledge and reactions in fighters. I'm playing SF 6 myself and rage so damn hard in ranked mode sometimes LOL. Some days are better than others, there is no genre of game that's a deeper reflection of the person playing than a fighting game imo and that's why we get so depressed or angry when we lose or make big mistakes in fighting games. You know it's on you, the opponent, and no one else to blame (unless the game is just badly designed or has poor mechanics). The driver always feels the stress, it's a great point about watching replays. The absolute best thing you can do for yourself is pull yourself out of the picture and look at what you did wrong your last few sets, this is exactly what you get in traditional arcade settings. Your friends would point out your mistakes or tell you to stop doing something if you're not mixing it up enough!

played comp fgs and smash for years with varying levels of success, sometimes ranked in my state and sometimes not skilled enough to be considered a bracket threat. my idea of being worthy or "good enough" was if i brought back a big enough chunk of cash from winning or placing in the money, and i became emotionally volatile whenever that was put into question. it didnt have to be in tournament, in fact, practice in the comfort and solace of my own home was often more punishing than being knocked out of bracket. It really does come down to how you have fun, or if you can make it fun while you do it. If i had applied that to myself sooner maybe i would have had more wins or higher rankings, but most importantly, I would have been nicer to myself, enjoyed the process more, and come out a happier individual afterwards. Thank you for sharing and humanizing an experience a lot of us are ashamed of, even in our private moments. BIG UPS!

The ending is just stoicism. Accept what you feel, and realize that it is normal to feel the way you feel, but also realize that, at the end of the day, does it matter? Its a strange dichotomy to learn, but it does wonders on mental health. "I feel like shit, and that's okay" realizing why you feel like shit, and accepting that it is totally normal, even if it is rather meaningless in the grander context, is good practice."

Just recently hit a rough patch after getting to diamond 2 and it feels like its been impossible to climb. Obviously it's a fighting game, so I know I have no one else to blame except for myself. After logging off after a ranked session I can easily tell myself what I need to do to improve, but its way harder to apply said advice in a match. It actually helped having your video tell me that I need to mix up my approach against people. During the 'Game Within the Game' section, some of what you said literally had my mind replaying matches where I would drive rush > jab into a tick throw, but the throws would repeatedly get teched, and it felt like I had no options to open them up. Then you said 'next time just shimmy' and it FINALLY clicked, sometimes it helps to just have a third party tell you what you need to do. So thank you! Also the baseball analogy was great. In my friend group I'm the designated 'fighting game guy' and sometimes I have a hard time translating FGC terms into something people not in the scene would understand. Will definitely be stealing the baseball analogy when explaining fighting games to people! Long winded comment, but great video man! Really good advice throughout the whole thing

To add on to the pressure of performing combos you can do in practice but not in-game, I HIGHLY recommend practicing against the CPU. Level 5-6 is probably best cause the CPU gets kinda cheap past that lol but this has helped me alot because it puts you in an in-game situation without the pressure of there being a real person on the other side. You’ll start your become comfortable with executing your punishes and combos and that will carry over to matches against real players as long as you remember the CPU doesn’t really adapt it just well…computes? So keep in mind this practice isn’t to learn how win matches/sets or gather character match up knowledge, it’s to allow you to become comfortable executing the things you know how to do while you have a moving opponent on the screen with you.

If you had to ask me to bet on if I took less than or more than 100 tries to beat M. Bison in SF II, I’d bet over just bc I forgot and wouldn’t be surprised if that’s true. Appreciated the self-reveal cuz I definitely sucked ass in SF games and SF6 is the 1st one I’ve actually improved in (1 Star Diamond). This clip’s very helpful 👍🏾

I had one moment on Granblue Versus Rising where i felt like i have improved a lot, and i don't feel like doing Ranked match. So i decided to do casual match with a member on Discord. At first, i feel like it should be just fun matches to mess around with. In the end, i only got 1 win out of like 20 matches. I can handle loses in GBVSR, but after those casual matches i felt like garbage and kinda heartbroken. I thought i HAVE improved a lot, turns out i still need to learn a lot. It hurts but thanks to that, i have a lot more realistic expectation in my Ranked Match journey.
