i am from Austria and this is one of the most iconic moments in our sports history.

You should have seen my mum’s face when she won, they were best friends in (Australian) high school together. She was immeasurably proud and in a state of disbelief that her friend had gone on to win gold in the olympics. Austria is blessed to have had such a wonderful women compete for them, and I dare say there were a number of people over here that wished she had competed for Australia. I can say I’m not apart of these few and am very glad that Austria had a moment like this to be proud of.

Very interesting... I'd never heard of doping in triathlon. This should be big news! Any other sport where an athlete is found guilty of taking EPO, all previous wins are nulled and voided and they're banned from the sport! Interesting that triathlon maintains this clean image

@@thripples1 Yes, Brigitte McMahon was, but there was no evidence that any of the others did - and the testing has been rigorous off the back of the scandals of pre-2000 cycling

@@bluedevil4630 an absolutely fair comment. I looked into this 2 years ago when I made this comment and I stand by it - it *should* be big news if a high calibre athlete tests positive to a banned substance, particularly drugs that give such significant advantage like EPO or steroids. It was cruel to watch Michellie Jones lead the whole race in Sydney 2000 just to be beaten in the last 200m... and then I find out by someone who 5 years later tested positive to EPO... I was outraged and I think her medal should be stripped from her, just as Marion Jones' were. The other athletes that Marcus mentioned each have minor to major doping allegations against them (apart from Spirig and Fernandes as far as I can tell), but what I find more interesting is that when I went searching for evidence of each of these athletes' allegations is that Marcus has made this same comment multiple times over the past 5 years and either wishes to discredit some athletes by associating them with others, or believes that all drug allegations are immediately damning regardless of the severity of the accusation or whether they are found guilty or not. Anyway, I still stand by my original comment and I find it interesting that triathlon has a maintained a "clean" image compared to other sports... perhaps it is the lack of celebrity status athletes found guilty of doping like Lance Armstrong... perhaps it is something else.
