Күн бұрын

Earlier this year we planted three different potato varieties in our in-ground garden and four different varieties in our raised bed garden. We wanted to see how the raised bed production would differ from the in-ground production, and boy was there a difference!
Join us as we harvest the last row of in-ground potatoes and one of the four varieties that we planted in the raised beds. We'll weigh the harvest from each variety, talk about our return on investment for seed potatoes, and try to explain why this one was variety had such insane production!

A great harvest buddy !!! I will definitely try some of those rose gold next year. I got a late start with my taters this year. As hot as it’s been here in Louisiana, I just dug my Baltic rose Saturday and had an 11 X multiple. So I was extremely excited. I scratched under a couple plants to get enough taters to go with my snap beans. Not bragging but them there were some good vittles a couple weeks ago !

37 to one is astonishing for potatoes. 15-25 per pounds is what my grandfather did after years of effort. And he depended on his crops for survival. Nothing in raised beds though where you have more controls over the environment. Thanks Travis always good stuff.

My wife showed me your photo on Facebook of the hail down there. We had hail last month and had some big holes in my cabbage leaves. The biggest damage was on the fruit of my apple and pear trees. I hope the damage is minimal. I vine killed(desiccated) my Yukon Gold and most of my Asterix potatoes last week. I generally dig mine 12-21 days after vine kill. My Kennebec vines are still healthy and green, I'll vine kill them next week. This has been one of the coolest Springs I can remember. We still haven't seen 90 degrees and the nights have been in the 50's to low 60's. Perfect tater growing weather. It's been good for cabbage too. I knocked over my onion tops this morning. I'll leave them to dry for a week or more if the weather is relatively dry. Then I pull them up, trim to tops and roots off and let them get good and dry under a shed. I have some good ones for the varieties I grow, about a pound and a half maximum size.

Gold star for Travis. First, it's a year's supply of sweet corn out of a little postage stamp patch pf corn. And now it's a back breaking yield of beautiful potatoes out an area no bigger than a bathtub. I do believe you could plant a popsicle stick and grow a nice shade tree. I'm trying four varieties of Prairie Wood seeds and growing them in compost in seven-gallon containers, British style. Early days, but I hope for at least 12/1 return. You've got the bar set pretty high.

And if I'm right maybe you can send me some of them taters you planted for my raised garden bed over here 😁 *The secret is that one beautiful lady helped you to plant those raised garden beds and the sweetest little angel gave it a kiss. I’m growing potatoes for my first time this year in containers and I planted 4 different varieties but they are not ready to harvest yet. I may have started them a little late because I waited until after the last frost date (May 5th zone 7B) here in Virginia just over the state line from NC. The plants are looking great and I haven’t had any pest damage. I have not fertilized but I used 100% compost with lots of cow, horse, and chicken manure composted in. I hope I get a good harvest like you did in your raised bed! 😊

Can't wait until my potatoes, including Baltic Rose and Caribe are ready because my little man is going to help. He might not know it yet. A little later planting this year, first week of April. Had to fight off the bugs, a couple three doses of Captain Jack's did the trick.

Love it! I have a big row in the ground, and 6, 30 gallon grow bags of potatoes. In the bags, I filled them halfway, planted, and as they came up, I added two layers of soil on top. The plants are huge, but they still have about 30 days. Your taters look great - nothing beats homegrown taters. Store potatoes taste a bit sad in comparison.
