I have a pretty simple definition of worker placement: you have a handful of workers and you put them on the board to do some actions. Any game that does this thing are worker placement games in my eyes. Some call games like Istanbul and Teotihuacan worker placement games, but they don't feel anything like games such as Agricola, Viticulture or Stone Age. In Istanbul and Teotihuacan you don't have a pool of workers but you're moving pieces on the table. If that's worker placement, then Monopoly is a worker placement game.

Yes I think this sums up the mechanic well! Agreed on Istanbul and Teotihuacan, they don’t feel worker placement-y!

If you haven't already, perhaps you'll like Dune: Imperium, since there, the tradeoff of having more workers is having less cards for the showdown/buy phase, since you must play them for each worker placed. So not only is there an upkeep cost, you also decide which cards to place workers with(and use the upper "placement" effects of), and which ones to keep for showdown & purchases. Might be more interesting than uniform food

But my favourite is RAIDERS OF THE NORTH SEA. I really like the method of one on/one off, and the way the workers escalate as you work on the board. Probably Caverna from Uwe Rosenberg, along with Agricola it was my introduction to board games (beyond Monopoly and Risk) and I loved it from the start. My favorite feature of Caverna specifically is probably the complete absence of luck or chance in the game. Two things I want to point out. First of all, there is NO added benefit to players going last in Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar. Why? Because it doesn’t really matter. If you go first, you pay lower corn costs. If you go last, you get to move up the gears faster, but you have to pay more corn for it. I think this is actually the most balanced solution for the “first player advantage” problem. The other thing is, normally, passing the first player marker does NOT mitigate unfairness. For example, in a three-player game with four rounds, somebody will end up holding the first player marker twice.
@cogitodesign
@cogitodesign 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is a fair point. The designers of Tzolk'in have clearly spent a long time balancing this issue. I wonder whether mathematically paying lower corn costs or moving up the gears faster are perfectly balanced but they must be close. Agreed on the issue of passing the first player marker. It is not a perfect solution especially with uneven player numbers. Thanks for your thoughtful and helpful comment.

Bought ever Dell on sale right before the pandemic started and still haven't played. Feels bad man. Anyways another amazing video from an amazing Channel I like worker placement but I really love simultaneous play which makes me think an option with a grid that you choose which action you're going to take could be interesting with the benefits of that action decreasing the more players who take it let's say there's only 16 auctions available you could have the letters ABCD and the numbers 1 2 3 4 and you get to play four actions. Not sure if this might induce analysis process and others as it would in me. It would give you the benefit of being able to asymmetrically improve your abilities based on letters numbers or both but with players need to decide whether if you want a more balanced strategy whether more flexible have a really strong a column are really strong number one column etc

Sounds like an intriguing twist on the mechanic. Our last game was simultaneous (Philosophia: Floating World) so we know how much of a challenge it can be to add that into a game! But the fast-paced nature and never having to wait for your turn is, I think, worth it. That being said we found some people were put off by this as they feel rushed.

Mine are Beyond the Sun and Arnak. Some nice catchup mechanics in those. Keyflower is also an interesting blend of mechanics that mesh well. Cytosis and Cellulose have a really nice educational theme that helps you learn both biology & how the games work, at the same time. Viticulture plays around with first-turn advantage compensation in clever ways. I'm interested in Bora Bora and Tzolk'in, with how they twist the blocking aspect in interesting ways, but haven't gotten to play with them

My favourite worker placement game is Viticulture with the Tuscany Expansion. It turns a very good game into one of the all time best. The worker placement is excellent, with turn order being integrated into your choices as mentioned in the video, and although action spots are limited it never feels entirely as if you are pushed out of the game, there's always something you can do, or at least that you could have done to prevent yourself being edged out. You do need to go in recognizing that it's half worker placement, half card game (under estimate the value of the Visitor cards at your peril!). I only wish the mechanical aspect of harvesting grapes and turning them into wine was a) slightly less fiddley and b) a bit more thematically accurate to the actual wine making process! (That wouldn't bother everyone, but it's so wrong and so obviously wrong that for me it does break the spell a bit.)
@cogitodesign
@cogitodesign 2 жыл бұрын
Great point, I agree that it could be improved if it was more thematically accurate. The luck of which cards you get can also be an issue. I still absolutely love this game though despite these little 'glitches'! Thanks for commenting and good luck in the giveaway!

Oh there are so many wp games i love. Ancient world is one of my favorite. Love the artwork (big fan of All Laukat games). Love the titan mechanic. But i enjoy playing anachrony (still have to try the latest ks espansions), everdell, Orleans (more for the bag building part), lords of Waterdeep (with the espansion). And i almost forgot Terramara and the future placement gimmik.

Hands down Keyflower. Not only is the worker placement used for area control/influence and activating actions, but can also be used as bids and be swapped between players. Way better than just the basic place and take an action.

This War of Mine: The Board Game. I like historical places like Greece 🇬🇷 and like the great or Second World War. Those stories give you more relatable emotions because you’re outside the numbers and facts and you’re getting personal involved. You’re there they were the same age. This could’ve happened to me born in the wrong time wrong place.

i always have a terrible time saying what my favorite is about anything, but i'll try. My favorite worker placement game as a worker placement game is probably still Agricola. It was the first heavier game in my collection and it's still what i think of when you say "worker placement." That being said, my current favorite game that contains worker placement (loosely defined) is Obsession. A the most interesting, creative use of worker placement i've played is Red Outpost.
