This is why I like the earlier seasons of TTTE. They don't talk down to kids, and even A Close Shave proved that. As I'm certain we all know, trains are heavy machines, and while they may not talk to us like the engines in TTTE do, they cannot stop on a dime. Duck probably couldn't stop those trucks right away because of their speed and weight pushing against him.

It is actually a very accurate scenario. Unlike European and American railways, British lines ran 'loose coupled' or unbraked freight trains well into the 1960s. The only brake power was provided by the engine and the guard's van (OK, caboose for US readers) and the safe running of such trains was a very skilled art.

I think the Mavis/Toby's Tightrope duology is pretty mature too. Toby is seen as a wise sage, but when Mavis does get into trouble in her self named story, Toby refuses to help her. But his driver points out Toby would get into trouble too as he did tell Mavis to "take the trucks herself." It shows us that even the wisest of us do make mistakes. And the Toby's Tightrope story shows us that sometimes, pranks go too far, and Mavis immediately comes to Toby's rescue. She had grown up so much in that incident, still with much to learn, and it's my favourite two parter to date.

I've always loved the subtle lessons presented in this show. Some of my favourites include: Dunkin' Duncan: Sometimes, Rushing to finish a job can come with its own consequences. Percy Takes The Plunge: Putting trust into people who'll take advantage of your naivety is never a good thing. Gordon Takes Charge: Showing off always leads to accidents waiting to happen. James and the Red Balloon: Everyone serves a purpose. Rock N' Roll: Always treat others with respect and value. Regardless of who they might be on the outside. All of the Duke Episodes: Don't underestimate your elders. Sometimes, their wisdom is what's needed to ensure that things run smoothly. Henry's Forest: Losing something special is never easy. But in every unfortunate situation, there comes a miracle.

One of the things I love in the Duck/Diesel trilogy is The Fat Controller. In the book he knows full-well that Diesel is guilty but gives him the benefit of the doubt. When he sends Duck away and the lies continue about Henry The Fat Controller's suspicions have been confirmed. Awdry made The Fat Controller an intelligent character and that's what's so brilliant.

I agree with almost all the episodes on your list (with the exception of Dirty Work), but here are some other episodes I consider to be mature/grown up: Thomas Comes to Breakfast: This episode does a good job of not letting compliments go to your head and shows what might happen if you get too boastful (even though the accident wasn’t Thomas’ fault.) Henry’s Forest: A heartwarming episode that shows that even though hard times in life happen, there’s always a way to make it better even though it won’t be the same. No Joke for James: This episode shows that some jokes can be funny, but there are some that can get others in trouble. Mavis and Toby’s Tightrope: This one shows what happens when one character learns a lesson about making a mistake and does better by helping someone out of trouble. Also it shows Toby and Mavis’ personalities. Toby: Old, Wise and experienced. Mavis: New, naive, inexperienced but maturing into becoming a better character. Also, like the episodes you mentioned in your honorable mentions, it shows us not to underestimate elders. Jack Jumps In: The message of this episode is really strong as it shows that Jumping in without thinking is not a good idea. Gordon and Spencer: Like many others, this shows the consequences of what happens when you don’t take other’s warning and advice seriously.

If I were to name some of the most mature lessons from the CGI Series, they would include: Don't jump to conclusions. _(Blue Mountain Mystery)_ If you treat everything as a joke, no-one will take you seriously when it matters most. ("Not Now, Charlie!") Fearlessness and recklessness aren't the same as bravery. _(Tale of the Brave)_ Two wrongs don't make a right. ("Thomas and the Emergency Cable") You can't please everyone. ("Duncan and the Grumpy Passenger") Covering up your mistakes won't erase the problem. ("Marion and the Pipe") There's no one "right" way to do things. ("The Perfect Gift") Don't put your trust in the wrong people. _(Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure)_ We all move at our own pace. ("Gordon and Rebecca, Coming Through!")

I agree with your conclusion with "Twin Trouble", but there's more you could've added: When Thomas brings up Annie and Clarabel, who he's also close with, at 11:48, he has a face, like, "Well... THIS is gonna end badly...", like he knows what the twins are gonna get into before it even happens, and he knows he can't do anything to prevent it. It also shows how love (In this case, brotherly love), is a double-edged sword. Once you separate with those you love, you're in for a world of hurt, as Donald and Douglas found out. It's an episode I never truly understood until I got a girlfriend, and later put the two pieces together.

@@cindersandashesuk5744 That'd be a good idea. I mean, "Twin Trouble" isn't my favorite episode, BUT it by no means deserves the amount of hate it gets, and is an underrated episode. The real problem with "Twin Trouble" is that it's TOO adult, so much so that a child will see it as no different than an episode from the HIT or CGI eras. It's almost impossible to fully and truly understand unless you've felt love before, which is rare for its target audience. (Also, I like how it introduces Donald and Douglas arguing for the first time, as, regardless of how close two people are, there will be arguments between them from time to time. The issue is the CGI series HEAVILY overdid the arguing, and show Donald and Douglas arguing WAY too often, in other words arguing in almost every episode. Donald and Douglas arguing every now and then is okay in my opinion, but the CGI series was just too much for my liking)

I would include the series 2 episode "Saved from Scrap," it was the first time viewers are introduced to the possibility that nothing lasts forever, that one day trains and steam powered vehicles could...die. Not only that, but we're introduced to the kind hearted Trevor the Traction Engine, who appears to be in a very sorry state at first and it's surprisingly mature about how openly Trevor talks about his potential fate, now that his Master has sent him to the scrap yard: "Hello, you're not broken and rusty, what are you doing here?" "I'm Trevor, they're going to break me up next week," "What a shame!" "My driver says I only need some paint, polish and oil to be as good as new, but my Master says I'm old fashioned," After meeting Trevor, you can see how desperately Edward, sympathising and empathising with Trevor's situation, tries to think of potential people to buy Trevor, to save him from Scrap. Then when he sees the Vicar, he's both excited but cautious, hoping against hope that he'll buy Trevor. It's a story that I have a lot of time for

I'm glad to see someone beat me to it - 'Saved From Scrap' has long been my favourite. There are some very profound messages underlying the story, plus the initial appearance of a character based on a real life friend of Awdry's - the late Rev Teddy Boston. (aka the Fat Clergyman in Duke the Lost Engine.) Which is where Toby and Henrietta come in - Teddy introduced Awdry to the Wisbech & Upwell engines, on which they are based.

To answer your question about a kid's show using the word "Deputation", there was an episode of an obscure show called "Ivor the Engine" that dealt with the little Welsh railway being sold as a branch line to the main Welsh one and all sorts of unwelcome changes being brought one as a result. An eccentric rich lady bought the small railway to become the new Controller and, at the beginning of the meeting, the original Controller asked "What is this? A deputation?"

Impressed by all the analysis down the comments, show that how depth a message from the show can manage to be. Here’s other 2 examples: Snow(season 5) - Instead of thinking how bad the situation you are dealing, think of the others that dealt with the same situation of yours and they could somehow ended up successfully. Therefore you will find that ur not the only one have to deal with it, thus relax to think of the positive side. In this case, Thomas couldn’t stop whined about the botheration caused by snow. But after he heard about the tale of Skarloey facing with snow, he started to feel relieved and stop fussing about snow. Sally’s secret(season 6)- When salty was introduced to the island, he was sorted into a job he wasn’t really interested. Even though how hard he completed the jobs, he still missed the environment he used to live before coming to the island. But after a while, he was sorted into the dockyard diesel duty, which he was really proud to be. This is relatable to those who have been applied other countries to start a new life. Sure, we may not get used to the unfamiliar environment. However we should make a belief that there’s always a rainbow after some dark clouds. So keep in faith and someday you will find yourself a proper life for yourself.

If classic Thomas The Tank Engine had voice actors, one of the first things I would have wanted would be to have Thomas voice acted by Edward Glen for Season's 1, 2 and maybe 3 for young and cocky Thomas, and than Season's 4 and 5 voice voice acted by John Bellis to show just how Thomas has grown up and matured as time has gone on. It is unbelievable to see Thomas progressively get much more responsible and mature as time goes on I think Edward Glen's and John Bellis's voices would show the change in him greatly.

So is “Thomas and the Jet Engine.” Despite retconning the as-fast-as-Gordon ride in “Thomas Gets Tricked,” the former episode is my all-time favorite episode, and I grew up with the series’ American dubs; I was never crazy about Starr and Angelis.

The thing about the classic series is, after a few years you come back to it and understand the true meaning of the series and take them as life lessons rather than just looking back at childhood nostalgically... Also, the CGI series, influenced me in a bad way, the way Thomas treated diesel in misty island rescue and many others, cause me to be r*cist, I have learned my lesson by now and keep in mind that I was only six years old at the time, I didn't know better... Edit: A lesson I learned is even don't treat jerks like they treat you, it will only make it worse...

Something else about 'Thomas and the Rumours' that makes it interesting is that the engines jumped to conclusions because they were looking out for their safety in what they thought, naturally, was a hamper to it. That is also made clear as the case in 'Blue Mountain Mystery' where, despite not knowing the bigger picture, the little engines were 'luk-ing' out for Luke. It reinforces how far the characters concerned had come to respect each other from when they started out. The message there is: just because one isn't right, doesn't mean they don't have a reason. It's interesting too because 'Thomas and the Rumours' contrasts directly to Gordon being a prick toward James and Percy in 'A Better View for Gordon', also from Series 5. We are led to take it that Gordon is just reacting out of feeling uptight, but the dialogue suggests it being a story taking place when Gordon was still a young engine and heavily prioritising of himself, which could well have been the intention. Regards, Samuel Farris.

Most of my coworker-related gripes I have with my job remind me of more than a few character dynamics and stories. And the best part? Just like the characters, my coworkers never really learn. Handling carts has always felt like a busy shunting yard, the carts even run away when it gets windy! I never thought I’d learn how to work retail from growing up with Thomas, but hey, whatever works, works. I’ll delve more into this later, because honestly, I have plenty of stories and examples to tell.

The same really, Thomas is surprisingly relatable in terms of adult workplace humour. I think it's a reason Duck and the Diesel Engine's arc feels so grimly raw because it's a pretty realistic portrayal of how toxic workplace environments can get with the wrong personalities, pitting people with no willingness to learn against people with no patience to teach can be horrifically volatile and I know that from experience.

If there’s any episode I would say is mature, it’s Put Upon Percy. Its message is relatively subtle despite actually being spelled out: it’s a cautionary tale about being overworked. Percy is very…blunt about how put upon he is (and his driver, which is an important distinction), and it would be easy to just dismiss that, as everyone seems to be doing to him. But the show goes to great lengths to display how true that is. The montage shows him go all over the island. The train he brings into the docks is notably about as big as the flying kipper, so he’s pulling Henry-level freight trains, and is also expected (and shown) to shunt at each location. It’s a level of work that is almost unique to him: we don’t see many other engines having to go to so many locations and do so much on a daily basis. And from a realistic perspective, an 0-4-0 tank engine traveling that many miles would take forever. It wouldn’t be surprising to find out Percy’s driver didn’t get a break, in order to make sure all those jobs got done. To some extent, this is the reality of work for most people: you’re expected to wear many different hats, sometimes to your detriment. So it’s very clear that Percy is overworked. But when Percy goes to the coal mine, I do think that’s where the moral comes to pass. Percy misjudges how hard he has to push the cars. I think we’ve all been tired enough to drop something we’re carrying, or reach for a door handle and miss it. This is conceptually the same, except it’s a multi-ton steam locomotive doing it lol. It’s never said outright in the episode, but given that being tired can affect your reaction times, this is likely why Percy and his driver had the accident. Being overworked usually leaves you tired, and when you’re tired, mistakes happen. But sometimes that work isn’t all bad: working so much is also what saves Percy. Spending so much time at the coal mine, he probably knows the layout by heart, and him remembering the canvas barrier may not have happened otherwise. Being overworked put him in jeopardy but also spared him a terrible fate. It is notable that, past this episode, nothing of this magnitude happens to Percy again. Personally I like to think that this takes place at the end of season 5, and concludes Percy’s overworked arc when STH sees how destructive such a schedule can be. It’s a nuanced perspective on work, that you very rarely see played straight in a kids show. We laugh at squidward saying he hates his job, but Percy…doesn’t? He just wants to have a decent variety and actually get to take breaks. That’s super relatable! This isn’t the only TTTE episode that covers this topic: Chickens to School is very direct with its messaging. But this is the episode that covers the realities of work the best. Forever it will be my favorite episode of the whole show, and I think it resonates with a lot of people (my mom’s even brought it up before: season 5 Percy is her favorite bc of episodes like this).

I thought the moral of "All At Sea" is that being curious about what it would be like to be in another place is a power. After all the last line from the narrator is "I think he knows that the best travels are those we can only dream about. Don't you?" It's a lesson I didn't understand at all as a kid. However as an adult it's my favorite story for that reason.

That is a lesson that it also teaches, though I feel that was more a secondary one.
