In this video, I talk about adapting in Rocket League and why it is the most overlooked strategy to rank up in the all of Rocket League, in my opinion. Adapting is really easy for anyone to do at any rank from beginners at bronze to experts at grand champion and supersonic legend.

Adapting in Rocket League is something that almost everyone has probably tried or thought about before but doesn't actually do regularly. It takes constant attention throughout the whole game in order to actually benefit from it. Adapting in Rocket League isn't something we do subconsciously. You need to constantly be looking for patterns to actually read your opponents. It becomes even more important in tournament play because you'll often be playing against the same team over and over again. This is why, at pro level in RLCS, we often see teams reverse sweep their opponents. Despite being destroyed in the first few games, they notice a pattern in the opponents' gameplay and they exploit it completely. Reverse sweeps wouldn't happen otherwise. Hopefully, you can take the knowledge in this video and apply it to your own games so you too can start adapting and make huge comebacks in ranked.

Another important part of adapting that I'm really used to: Adapting to your teammates' playstyle(s). I solo'd through Champ 1. You have to figure out your teammates as much as your opponents. Recognize who passes, shoots, demos, ballchases, cuts rotation, or whatever. Then make sure you're complementing their strengths, and hope they're not adapting to your original playstyle right when you adapt to theirs (which renders both adaptations moot).

So i just abandoned the game because i dont need ot waste the next 4:30 to take a game well probably lose anyway. Thank you for explaining this! It's very important to apply it in every game, it's intrinsic to soccer, and therefore, in rl too. You can also apply adaptability towards your teammates(I solo q a lot, it helps), if your teammates ballchase a lot, let them and play more passively. If they knew how to rotate properly, they would be doing it already, try to support your teammates' strengths and covers their weaknesses
@phatan1845

I'm D2 and I find that the biggest challenge in lower ranks is less about adapting to the opponents but more about getting a feel for the playstyle and decisionmaking of my teammate. When my teammate and I have a similar playstyle and synergise well it usually doesn't matter all too much what the opponents are doing. But when we aren't on the same page no matter how much I adapt to the opponents it's not gonna work out.
@myone191000
@myone191000 3 жыл бұрын
In these situation you have to adapt to your team mate playstyle and rotation and try to play well around em, it's not gonna be the best but at least you should improve and not take too much goals
@joned1000

Adapt to your teammates playstyle. If you have a aggressive playstyle and so does your team mate, play more passive or be more supportive,. being able to adapt doesn’t just apply to your opponents. Just saying “it’s not gonna work out” is basicly you saying you don’t have adaptiabilty.

Very true. It’s much easier said than done to try and adapt to both your solo q teammates AND your opponents but it’s definitely possible. That’s why I almost never solo q. The fact I don’t have to keep adapting to my new teammates each game is one less thing to worry about.
@blaisebeach4349
@blaisebeach4349 3 жыл бұрын
Wayton put it perfectly. If you can't adapt well to solo q teammates, then remove them from the mix and find regular teammates you know and can adapt with over time. You're focusing on something shortsighted instead of doing what high level players do; Find a solution to your issue and adapt to rocket league instead of caring about the common rabble.

I've been trying to do this towards the end of this season, but because it's the end of the season, I've been playing a lot of extra modes (close out the season with something different). One thing I've noticed is that rumble and dropshot force you to adapt to your opponents way more than regular soccer. In rumble, it's the RNG element you have to adapt to plus your opponents. In dropshot, it's the changing position of your goal, which can alter your rotations, that you must adapt to with your opponents. Other thing' I've noticed about extra modes: Hoops is great for learning backboard defence. Snowday is great for practicing demo strategies. (it's a bloodbath if each team has a demo guy)

Rocket league is a lot like football (soccer) tactically. If the the other team is using a high pressing intensity you up the tempo to try and catch them out of position. Their tactic was good but you shouldn’t use it for the whole game. Once you grab a few goals from it you should start playing more reserved, or else this happens.

I would say there is another huge part to this, but it kind of overlaps with reviewing replays. This video focuses on how the opponents are playing, and how you can counter their playstyle. The other part to adapting is looking at your own positioning and decision making when you get scored on. This seems obvious but in my opinion is harder to spot, because you already have a bias towards your own playstyle and think you made the best decision. An example of this is when you drive up on the wall by your goal post to go for a save and get scored on in that same position multiple times in one game . A lot of players would look at the opponent and say, oh he flicked it far side and I expected him to hit it near post, or I didn't expect them to fake and go under. This is too focused on the small details and on the other player. If you are able to recognize the pattern, then you would notice that you were on the back wall every time. being on the back wall can limit your options in terms of going for the save, and staying on the ground would be a better option. What is harder is sometimes, you can go long stretches without being exploited by one team or player like that, and finding ways to "adapt" doesn't seem so obvious now. This is when you can look back on the past few games and see if there is a pattern across multiple different opponents that happen less frequently. This is also why reviewing replays is recommended so often and can be so useful. It allows you to go over things you don't remember or might have missed. I hope this helps anybody reading this :)

Really good vid Wayton. I see a lot of people nowadays trying to use the “flakes fake challenge galaxy brain 200 iq” playstyle in 2s and it’s so easy to read because they don’t have the hours flakes does to pull it off. I get accused of ball chasing mindlessly, but against those players, it works because in their eyes it’s not what I SHOULD do, so they don’t expect it. As soon as they start adapting and getting around my early challenges, I start fake challenging, and the game is 100% in my control the entire time. They expect an immediate challenge since I’ve done it all game, and now I have a free ball. I’m only 1700 but adapting got me there.

honestly, this is really well done. im linking this video to my friend that im teaching and getting him exposure to champ level plays. we mainly play 3's without a 3rd and before i even get the chance to adapt while we are down a couple points our random 3rd tries to ff and my teammate kinda loses all hope because the 3rd usually stops playing since i never ff. so ill show this to him and maybe this'll change his mind on losing hope after that point. also first video ive seen of yours and im subbing

If you start to implement the major tells like: do they cut rotation, or does he follow you up for aerials, or does he never come back for defense, etc, you'll hit a point where you're so tuned into those specific things that you'll be able to notice them much more quickly, allowing you to then search for another, maybe not so obvious tell... Does he consistently try to throw the ball out to the middle off the backboard or the sidewall, how accurate of a shot does he have, can he dribble, etc. Then after a few weeks of getting in maybe as deep as 2 or 3 layers, you'll find that you will notice even smaller details. If you start with one or two layers, by seasons end you'll be getting into your teammates' head so quickly that it won't even be an actual thought anymore. Best of luck out there:)

Hi Wayton, this is the first video ive seen from you and i enjoyed it. I am a switch player , stuck at Diamond 3 and i gotta say most of the things you said in this video are done by the common player on my rank BUT the difference is when it comes to scoring. In Diamond 3 people havnt figure out yet how to aerial correctly, me included, and most people are "Jays" that sends off the ball and challenge everything. Just wanted to say that, bew suscriber here
