To clarify: A pipe rifle with kneecapper is a completely vanilla weapon, but normally can only be found like any other random legendary weapon spawn. I have found quite a few in my playthroughs just by killing legendary enemies. However, in this video, I used a mod I downloaded from Nexus called VIS-G Legendary Modifications to "simulate as if we found this legendary spawn." I would not be able to guarantee I could find the weapon I wanted to make the video on, so this was the only way to ensure I could show off this specific gun. I showed the location of the Big Jim in case you wanted to do the same to ensure you could test this gun as well. I also wanted to show it off at a very low level to demonstrate how extremely powerful the effect is regardless of player level. The only two weapons that I know of that are guaranteed to spawn with kneecapper are the Big Jim (shown in the video) and a flamer called Sergeant Ash, which I believe is sold in Far Harbor.

I've got to be honest, watching that deathclaw struggle to crawl around and try to stand up actually made me feel lowkey bad. Poor bastard.

Not sure how people are still struggling with adhesive after all this time. Make base. Plant Corn, mutfruit, tato. Build water stuffs. Combine water + veggies = vegetable starch. Scrap starch = adhesive.

If you’re really, truly playing vanilla, a kneecapper pipe pistol is basically a unicorn. But yes, several legendary effects like this make pipe weapons ridiculously op (like explosive).

Had an automatic pipe pistol with the bleed effect... since bleed stacks, it would literally melt the biggest mobs in the game and Pipe ammo is SO plentiful and cheap.

Any gun with the Kneecapper effect is good. But a Pipe pistol with that same effect is way too OP. It just turns the most worthless gun into a game changer. 😂

During my last run of the game, I came across a legendary pipe rifle (around level 10) that was just like Spray n Pray in that it fired explosive bullets, and the best thing about it was it only used .38 ammo.

In Fallout 3 the dart pistol was a MUST for deathclaws.

If you get Big Jim and equip it. The legendary effect applies to your grenades. So that is one alternative to trying to farm for a kneecapper pipe rifle.

Also, if you want a guaranteed multi hit kneecapper weapon, Sergeant Ash is a kneecapper flamer that is pretty amazing. The only issue with it is the relatively low range and expensive/hard to find ammo, especially since for some reason there's no energy weapon ammo manufactory in contraptions.

ALERT - You need some mod to more the kneecapper. In vanilla it just doesn't work.

I remember when I found a kneecapper pipe gun while playing vanilla, I turned it into a drum mag fed auto pistol, keeping it as a backup-backup weapon for those specific encounters with deathclaws, and anything else that was melee and I didn't want it to get close

If you're on survival difficulty, another good thing about this would be that the 38 ammo is light, cheap, and plentiful.

I had found a double-barrel shotgun with that Kneecapper legendary effect. Shotguns have multiple projectiles and usually it was a single shot for the effect to trigger. Limping Death claws is like shooting fish in a barrel!

Best weapon Ive found on strictly vanilla was a combat shotgun with explosive legendary. Even in hardest difficulty it shreds everything with easy, made the game super easy

Dang it, I have a kneecappers walking cane and hunting rifle. Although I can eventually cripple enemies with it my 2 shot assault rifle kills most things relatively quick.

Pipe weapons are dope for heavy VATs users. You can start the game with a gun like *deliverer* on leaving the Vault. Receiver - light or hair-trigger Barrel - short light Magazine - quick Sights - reflex Grip/stock - up to you just keep stock standard or sharpshooters grip. Muzzle - none! Yeah, the shots do 12 damage, but when you have lots of shots in VATs (as it such low AP usage costs) that’s a lot of criticals you can charge. Put a *calibrated* or *calibrated powerful* ;if you find one ; on a receiver on a different weapon like *10mm* or *.45 pipe revolver* and swap to them when you wish to use crit hits. Dump some points in *better Criticals* and pipe weapons will take you far into the game.

That’s pretty damn awesome! Only time I’ve ever been able to cripple Swan was in modded PC playthroughs with the Remote Explosives mod (hit him with a remote Mini Nuke charge after he had walked through a line of frag mines & bottlecap mines).

You missed one of the pipe gun's other strengths, it is _light._ In Survival difficulty, this weight means you can carry more food, water and ammo when compared to other "stronger" weapons, and in other difficulties it still means it won't take up as much inventory as other kneecapper weapons. The receiver that really makes pipe guns shine though is the rapid automatic receiver, it fires almost 2x as fast (it rivals the minigun!) and is still quite light. It does chew through ammo quickly, but .38 is super common, super cheap, and super light, so keeping the gun fed isn't an issue. You actually don't want to go too hard into reducing the recoil either, too much recoil reduction and the gun actually starts to recoil in the opposite direction, the base recoil is tame enough you could just slap a compensator on a short light barrel for a perfectly serviceable 2 weight rapid machine pistol.

The best part of using legendary pipe weapons is that .38 ammo is super easy to find, especially if you play like I do and take a rank or two in the Scrounger perk. A gun like this is great for slowing things down, especially mobs that are agile like deathclaws and ghouls. Won't be weaving through the bullets for long. I prefer Explosive but Kneecapper is not a bad choice if you don't have Explosive. Other effects that are great on auto weapons are Freezing, Staggering, and Wounding. Many others are useful but I find these to be the best for my play style.

The stacking Wounding legendary is insanely good on a pipe rifle. Their health drains so fast after multiple hits.

In the sewer to the left you can get a gun with creeple effect too

Kneecapper is great, but Explosive Bullets effect is just better. It gets more damage, it stacks with automatic AND explosive skills, cripples all limbs AND KILLS EVERYTHING AROUND, ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

OK, So I just tried doing this after the massive Fallout 4 next-gen update on PC on 25-Apr-2024. I found Big Jim at the location you indicated, and it does indicate "20% chance to cripple the target's leg", but at the weapon workshop it shows no mod that I can remove. It simply lists 'standard' as the only current mod on Big Jim. So how can I transfer this effect to my pipe gun?

Found one on my last playthrough at an absurdly low level, converted to full auto and was still using it at lvl 60 for melee mobs which it completely wrecks as shown.

I found it and it didn’t say knee capper just gave the 20% stat non-removable at the work bench..

The most op gun is the explosive shotgun, bullets are common and you can even make them, one shot almost anything 2 shot the more health heavy opponent.

I wasn’t able to remove the legendary effect from the wrench. I didn't see the Nexus mod in the Xbox mod search.

After a bit of testing, I noticed the further you go with this, the more inconsistent it became. As I progressed, enemies would barely ever get crippled legs after 300 rounds. Some regular human chars never got crippled, while some set bosses (Swan) would get hit pretty quickly. Feels like there's some internal threshold that dictates whether or not it'll work. It's an interesting one. Maybe the mod just broke the gun.

ATTENTION VIEWERS: I HAVE Big Jim, and it HAS the "20% chance to cripple the target's leg" showing. My Armorer, Gun Nut, and Blacksmith stats are maxed - But going to the work bench - the ability to remove the Kneecapper is NOT showing up. In fact, although it DOES have the Kneecapper status affect it is NOT showing Kneecapper as a removable Mod at the Weapons Workbench... I'm guessing this is NO LONGER available after the NextGen patch??? Anyone?

Every time I see Dogmeat downed I’m screaming “HEAL HIM”, constantly forgetting it’s very hard and not Survival so Companions are still essential flagged. I just like the dog and feel bad whenever he’s downed.

Gotta admit. This actually kinda realistic too. If you shot something in the leg in real life and broke its kneecaps. It would be wimping in pain and in a very bad position to do anything to the player. Try this on enemies using power armor though. It may not go as well.

Any of those Kneecappers I find that I'm not going to use I give to my settlers. Great for taking down most any creatures and also works on stopping raiders, gunners and super mutants from overrunning a settlement. Put a settler with a bolt action Kneecapper with a scope in a high position and it is like having a sniper taking down most anything.

I agree with this: pipe weapons with legendary effects are great weapons to keep on hand. I got an explosive automatic pipe weapon in my first run and I kept it through the game because it always had a use and was light and the ammo is literally everywhere.

11:11 I beat Swan at level one using Big Jim which of course has the, wait for it....... kneecapper effect. Kneecapper is every bit as good as you are making it out to be.

Sucks you actually can’t transfer legendary effects in vanilla like that. Got the Big Jim and couldn’t move it. Doesn’t matter that you gave a pinned comment after the fact explaining it’s from a mod, how about you actually title your videos appropriately instead of cluck-baiting people into watching your channel? If you actually had a way to get it legitimately in vanilla, that would be something worth watching. The only good thing this video showed was how effective kneecapper is with a pipe pistol, so mission accomplished there. For the people who don’t like using mods, we’ll just have to wait until we can find a pipe pistol with that effect naturally. However long THAT will take.

Put a Vault Tec lab coat on your character and you've got Frick & Morty

Remember, the effect works for companions too. Give it to one of them if it isn't practical for your build/play style and let them anchor enemies while you finish them off.

Went to go get this weapon and kneecapper was a wrench that I couldn't transfer the mod from. Found a laser pistol that does 50% more limb damage in stash. Works great still not sure if it's the same effect but great video😊

The "Wounding" effect is better for pipe weapons. A couple of short, well placed bursts, and it's pretty much fire and forget. Sure, the Kneecapper effect immobilizes them, and keeps them from coming near me. But what does it matter if they try to come near me, when they bleed to death before they even get there? Damn thing even works on robots and turrets, too. Plus, I could always choose to just aim directly for the legs, to hobble them _and_ get the bleed at the same time.

Kneecapper is a good effect. Explosive is better 99% of the time. If you are going to get kneecapper, better to get it on a higher damage weapon you are actually going to use so you don't have to constantly flip between them. The advantage of cheaper ammo is meaningless when you still have to use other ammos to finish something off in less than 500 rounds. Remember, a .38 still always sells for a cap, so you can't get less than 1 cap per shot in lost value and if it takes MANY times the number of shots, do the math. You might be better off selling the trash and buying good ammo. Explosive still stops enemies from stun, stagger, and crippling so long as you keep pouring the damage in - and that damage is sufficient to make even a pipe rifle able to end the biggest HP sponges in the game in short order. Explosive is also very easy to get on a Tommy (SpraynPray) or a Radium Rifle (Kiloton) without anything other than a few handfuls of caps (which you can get quickly scrapping and selling materials from any settlement).

I despise pipe rifles or pistols as soon as I get actual rifles and 10 mm pistol or other better quality guns. I despise them so much that when I get a new settler, I take THEIR pipe pistol and give them something better. No one who works with me is gonna be caught with that garbage.

So I go into my inventory & first I found a Kneecapper Board, which just made me laugh but then I also found a Kneecapper 10mm so I've just specced that out instead. Thanx for the tip 🤘

I ran across a vanilla legendary minigun with wounding on it once in the fish packing plant

I found a Combat Rifle with Kneecapper on it. I've been happily blowing ghoul limbs off with it, and I didn't even put Automatic on it. I put a Calibrated Powerful receiver on it so it can actually kill stuff and not use a million .45 ammo to do it. It's quite effective, even without automatic! I haven't found kneecapper on a pipe pistol yet, but I do have an exterminator's pipe pistol and let me tell you, that Mirelurk Queen that pops up while you are trying to take the Castle? She went down like a sack of potatoes. A couple frag mines, and then plugging her with the pipe pistol and she was dead lickety-split. Now if I were in danger I woulda shot her a few times with the combat rifle. It's weird, though, that crippled enemies won't even crawl towards you. Oh, and Kneecapper works hilariously well against robots too. You saw it with the Gutsy, but it also works nicely against Assaultrons too.

You are wrong about the double shot pipe rifle, It can be turned into a amazing smg, and is one of the best utility weapons in the game, it will Easly kill any thing that is not a high level, and even things like death claws can be taken out quickly which wallows you save your good ammo for the more power enemy's. It is one of the best weapons in the game as you can get ammo for it everywhere, and use it for pest control, I can't stress how good it is to have a weapon that is strong enough to kill the majority of enemy's in the game, while using the most abundant ammo type in the entire game, it is exceedingly useful, and vary powerful if found early in the game like I did.

What's funny is I knew what this guy was gonna say before I even clicked on this. I picked up this gun completely randomly and at first underestimated its absolute destructive power. The more I used it, the more it became a staple in my arsenal. I renamed it the kneecapper, and It's so broken cause it'll basically never run out. It eats dirt and spits death. It will outpace the health bar of literally anything. No beast can overcome its humble yet deadly nature

I've played this game over 5000 hours, mostly on Survival. I don't remember ever coming across a pipe gun with that effect.

At least half a dozen play through and I've NeVER seen this Legendary effect On a Weapon Other than big Jim. Have fun modders, but the odds of getting it naturally early on is a "pipe" dream. You see what I did there?

Found a kneecapper combat shotgun earlier today and I think it might have been the first time I found a weapon with that legendary.

Man i found a 38cal pipe smg that has the 25 poison per hit legendary.. thing is top tier. Character im working on right now is about level 37 and never went to Concord will need to start another soon though when the update drops..

Creating a backup save right before you get to the vault lift to leave eliminates the need for the start up mod. Just load the old save, walk 10 feet and get asked if you want to wave with your current appearance/stats.

I remember discovering how op the kneecapper effect was for myself, coincidentally it was a pipe rifle and after seeing it turn a legendary deathclaw into a joke a knew it was the most op effect in the game.
