I don't own fish, but from the outside looking in this is a ridiculous premise. They're saying it's wrong to have them in a bowl but not a 20 gal tank? Having the fish is for their entertainment. Its cool, but they're acting as if they're taking the high road by expanding the fishes area by a few gallons Lol. And for them to be against feeder fish doesn't make sense either, I don't see them complaining about feeding shrimp. What makes fish better than shrimp? Intelligence? Are they vegan or do they eat meat? I'm pretty sure cattle are more intelligent than fish, and pigs are extremely smart. I'm a fan of their videos but its weird how they could be so oblivious to their own hypocrisy.

I love my Goldies. They are like little family members. Feeders 😞 I actually was so upset about them one day I went and “ rescued” some of the biggest ones ( they lived this long in crappy conditions so they deserve a good life) and some of the tiniest ones ( because they deserved a chance to grow up and be loved) It’s been a few years now, I lost a few in the beginning but I still have them and they’ve grown and thrived. They make me happy everyday. They love to splash water out of the tank to get my attention. They are living beings with feelings and I wish I could save them all. They are my absolute favorite. My comets, my black moor, my telescope, my orandas and my daughters fantail. Many large goldfish tanks in my home and I’m sticking with them. Goldfish are wonderful. I wish more people could appreciate them.

@@erikempire318 Is it all variances including harmless ones (like colorations not linked with genetic disorders), or just the harmful ones? Because if it's the former then that technically bans ALL Goldfish since the ones in the aquarium trade aren't naturally occurring at all, even the comet which retains the natural body shape but has FAR brighter coloration. It would also end up technically banning 100% of dogs, 40% of cats, 70% of livestock and 20% of exotic birds. I agree that something has to be done, but you can end up with a law that either does FAR more than intended or nothing at all if it's written or focused incorrectly.

My son saved a goldfish from a fair. He found it under a bush in its bag. he brought it home to me because he knew I could care for it. It has been living in a 65 gallon tank for the past 8 months or so. It has doubled in size, and he is becoming a member of the family. My son has moved out, but my daughter visits every other weekend. The tank I put it in I have other plans for. So I will be setting up another tank to keep him/her. There must be something that we can all do to stop the carnivals from having these fish. We have to ban together or something. Get animal rights activists involved. It's a damn shame that carnivals keep these fish as prizes. I know why they do it, it's obvious. However, it doesn't make it right. They shouldn't be able to do it. There has got to be something we can do to change the law. There has to be....

Nice helpful information on goldfish. I had three healthy, big (6.5 to 8.5 inches), fancy goldfish in a 60g long for almost 4 yrs until I re-homed them with another goldfish keeper. The General Rule was 1 fancy goldfish Per 20g. My three were at the point of looking cramped in their tank. I'd suggest 30g minimal per goldfish now for hopefully long-term. I'd keep a "goldfish tank only" because of their bioload alone. Imo other fish don't need to be in their tank. It makes me so sad to see fish as prizes in carnivals.

Thank you for making this video, very much needed! I can basically check off every goldfish customer who has ever come into the LFS I work at as one of the types listed in this video. They almost never believe you when you show them adult comets because their little feeder comet can't possibly get to that size...and yeah, they're probably right, it won't. I do appreciate the people who do it right and really care about their goldfish, it brings a lot of relief and joy knowing they're going to good homes. Although I think many varieties are adorable (calico fantails being my favourite), I personally wouldn't get any except shubunkins/comets (in a large pond, of course) because of their gross mutations/intentional deformities, and the extra care and caution they require because of them. For example, I would be a lot more careful feeding a fantail than a shubunkin just because of the compressed nature of a fantail's body. Fantastic video, very well done, and I'm always looking forward to the next one!

One thing about water temperature and goldfish: 74 degrees is actually close to the maximum temperature these fish tolerate. They actually prefer anywhere from 66 to 72 degrees, with a maximum of 75 degrees before they start having issues. A heater is still a good idea in order to maintain a stable temperature in case of a temperature drop.
@furripupau
@furripupau 5 жыл бұрын
Keeping them at a warmer temp. makes them grow faster, which is why people do that. But cooler water is better for them. Goldfish, like all cold water fishes need more oxygen than tropicals, and cooler water has more dissolved oxygen in it. 70 to 72F is pretty much ideal.

@@erikempire318 Converting for Celsius, that's about right for summer. I wouldn't keep them quite that low in winter, though. I absolutely love my goldies. They are so goofy, and fun to watch, and seeing them grow over the past two years has been one of my greatest delights. They are truly my babies. It's a dream of mine to build a pond and save as many as I can, but right now, all I can do is hope and pray that the people who do take them home actually care for them and love them like they deserve.

Last year I considered getting my kid a goldfish and a small bowl for his birthday, but after a 2 minute conversation with a pet store employee, I found out they need much more than I was expecting! So I waited a year, did a little research, and this year for my kid's fifth birthday he got a 20 gallon set up and we're in the process of building a nice little community tank (slowly, because I know about the nitrogen cycle now!) Videos like this are great, because they help well intentioned people gain knowledge. And when you know better, you can do better!

Fancy goldfish are amazing pets. I love mine to bits and keep eight varieties at the moment! Pro tip: vallisneria types are great live plants for goldies, at least mine don 't eat it, it will grow in lower temperatures and looks great too! One little piece of advice: I would not recommend gravel or rocks as substrate for goldfish. It traps dirt and can hurt the fish as they try and sift through it. I prefer a fine and round sand (so no building sand!) and my fish really like that too. It enriches their tank and allows them to display their natural karp behaviour of filtering the substrate.

Merlijn-Lotte Krommenhoek I’ve been using large round pond rocks and my two fancies have done well on them the past year, would switching to a sand be more beneficial for their natural sifting behavior? I’ve heard countless times that sand isn’t good for goldies bc when they go to eat the food they’ll ingest sand along with it, I guess that’s not true?

We had ours in a several hundred thousand gallon natural pond in our neighborhood, my dad and a friend built a waterfall to help filter the water, and we kept it in there with koi. We fed it fish food (I don't remember how often, but fairly often.) Those things do get absolutely huge man. I named mine Speedy lol

I have a sad story, for context I work at a fish and reptile store. Once someone came in and said she has had a single tail goldfish in a 10 gallon for 5 years. I said it will need an upgrade very soon and she said it will only grow to the size of the tank and then I said it will but might already be stunted and the goldfish will have a shortened life, I explained the how the organs keep growing. She said that she didn’t want to get a bigger tank. She was asking for a fish or snail that will clean the tank for her. I felt bad for that goldfish because I keep some a few years back and the where easily the most personable fish I have ever kept.

I built a fish pond for my mother in the backyard when I was a teenager, I'm 63 now, I stocked it with feeder goldfish for her, I built wooden boxes and planted water lilies. Those feeder goldfish grew large with beautiful fins, some had long fins and even spawned. After about three years the ponds fish population settled at around 200 fish. Two large peach trees over hung the pond and when the fruit fell in that as couldn't pick it was fun to watch the fish eat them as they moved across the water like motor boats. This was in El Paso, TX. So the fish over wintered fine, no heat. The pond was from 8 to 20 inches deep.

My 20 inch goldfish loves his bowl, from a distance ... They are the most expensive fish I ever had, they went fom the small tank to the medium tank to the large tank to the huge tank .... and then there is filtration, cooling during hot summerdays ... And they live long, very long lives if you really care. My oldest goldfish is about thirty years old, most are above seven years now. The time I invest in these goldies is huge. Daily waterchanges, somtimes twice a day ...

In sweden most people would say that you need at a minimum 90 gallons for goldfish, they're mostly considered a pond fish nowadays. I think it's weird that in some countries most people say they don't need more than 40 gallons. Common goldfish often get 12-14 inches when they're fully grown if their growth isn't stunted, theres alot of other breeds that get to that size that ppl would never put in a 40 gallon tank.

I agree 100% goldfish are part of the family and if you take the time and patients out they can react to their family in the same way that a cat or a dog does. When I was 12 bought a feeder comet named Gazgolder and he had something wrong with him. When I was going to take him to the vet someone told me to flush him. I said "Why would I do something like that. This is a living breathing animal. When I got him 12 years ago I knew what I was signing up for." To make a long story short he wound up having liver failure and unfortunately I had to have the vet put him to rest back this July, actually if he made it to August of this current year he would've been 13. But it was actually very heart wrenching for me especially cause he was my fish, but for my family as well. I even had him cremated and we even had a small funeral service for him.

Unfortunately, you are right, most are bred as feeder fish! A friend of mine had Green Terrors, another friend had Piranhas, and yet another had a ...I think it was a Tiger Oscar... they all bought goldfish as feeders for them on a weekly basis! They all explained to me how this is what they needed to eat, their natural food! Eventually, I found out where goldfish came from, after believing for so many years that goldfish were in every body of water that exists! One of these guys had a small salt water pond with Barracudas, and he would buy like 50 -100 Golds, just this huge bag, and just dump them in! It was cool at the time to watch nature do it's thing, but now that I've grown up, and mellowed out... I still understand the thought behind it, but I would never have an aggressive fish like that... Golds are just too pretty! Besides, it's not like there's not other options now... they just liked watching that!

When I first got into fish keeping a little over a year ago, I was super fresh to it. I had a turtle tank for 8 years but fish was a whole new world to me. I set up a 60 litre tank, went into the pet store a few weeks later and wanted to buy some mollies. The lady at the store stood there and convinced me that getting a few goldfish would be a way better idea since they are a lot more hardy and I can always keep them in a tropical tank anyway. Now a year down the line after I’ve learnt everything and seen the goldfish quadruple in size and eat all the baby mollies and plants, I’m stuck here trying to figure out what to do with them. I did recently upgrade to a 240 litre tank but I just don’t know if I can still keep them as I’ve found out they can grow to 12 inches on average. I feel so bad having them stuck in a 60 litre for a year, they do look a lot happier in the new tank now but it’s just not viable long term. Currently trying to find someone with a good pond that would want to take them but I’m struggling since most people don’t know much about fish and I’m not willing to send my two rascals to their death. They are adorable and I’ve gotten really attached to them but I just can’t justify buying and extra 4 foot tank when I live in a smallish flat

Excellent videos! Material is always clearly presented and understandable by all. I have a question. My wife and I are returning to the hobby after many years. We now have more time, being retired and having grown kids. We set up a 40G goldfish tank about two months ago and have 4 goldfish in it. The measure 2-2.5”. The tank has cycled and daily water checks show 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates, pH is 7.8-8.0, trump kept at 72 deg. We do daily water changes of 5 gallons. Question: We will be away for 5 days soon and then 10 days in May. We plan on using an automatic feeder set to minimal amount. Do you suggest we stop doing daily water changes a few weeks before we go so the fish won’t be shocked by a sudden stoppage of daily maintenance? In other words, should we start tapering off the daily water changes as we get nearer to our trips? Or do you think we could keep going with our routine right up until we go away? Your opinion is valued by us. Thanks in advance for your input. Dennis

Thanks for the video! It is very informative! I would like to point out that there are some live plants that can go into a goldfish thank. I keep anubias with my goldies and they don't chew on them. A very hardy, low light plant with a thicker, harder foliage, so fish will not eat them. Just tie them on a rock or wood and that's it. Mine are continuously blooming. 😊 So plants similar to anubias surely go well with goldies. 🤗
