I believe that one of the greatest inventions is photography. What a gift it is to have pictures of times gone by, loved ones, places we have been to and to remember history through pictures as well as documents. One of the saddest pictures in this clip was of the Jewish people being “selected” for the gas chamber , the poor mother holding her baby and walking away. The horrors inflicted on those people was unbearable.

I’ll agree to that. My mom was big photo taking buff, and I got stacks of photo albums of pictures she has taken from my birth to this day and even purchased for me all the photos of my school years from k-8 and every time I look at them I tear up and remember the moment I was there when the picture was taken. My mom passed away two years ago and probably the best memories of her was in the photos she always used to take. If you can hear me, hello mom. 😢

The photo of the west German soldier helping the the little boy over the fence is the photo I saw in Berlin when my dad was stationed there in 1977. I saw it at the museum at the Berlin Wall. I remember going into East Germany many times. My father wore his army uniform and I remember holding my ID against the car window and the East German guard writing our information into his notebook. The memories of those days will never be forgotten.

The woman in the far front carrying a baby is heading towards the gas chamber. And all of the children standing there. Heart breaking. Makes a greater impression when one sees individuals instead of hearing of big numbers.

The pastor of my church saw the state of the churches now and she is ashamed... It’s interesting to see so many photographs of soldiers caring for small animals. One can only imagine that they were searching desperately for some sense of humanity in the middle of inhumane conditions. The soldier depicted in the great novel All Quiet on the Western Front is shown, after years of unending battle, reaching out from his fox hole trying to pick a lone wildflower on the battlefield. The meaning is profound: searching for something beautiful and familiar in the midst ugliness and horror.

Beautiful comment. My grandfather was a bombardier in WW2 and always wore a carnation on his uniform. He also looked after the company dog Sparky, and spent time in the brig for dropping out of formation to give him water while he was dying of thirst. I have always believed how someone treats animals is the measure of their character. Thank you for sharing your thoughts

My father was a war photographer during the second World War. I don't think he realised the significance of his role at the time but without recording history we would be poorer. We can only imagine the enormity of that period and the tragedy that it was for so many. I don't like photography or moving pictures something creepy about it. Like an invasion of privacy but I appreciate the importance of his role in order to record history.

Excellent collection! Can't wait to show my wife, I was especially touched by the couple at 2:58, John McKay and Edith Steiner who shared their life together for 70 years through hell or high water, their whole story is amazing.

Thank you for your comment and appreciation. Yes John and Edith's story is amazing. One of the most poignant things to me is that after John's troop had liberated Edith (and her fellow captives), a dance was held to help reintroduce them to a "normal" life and activities. It was there that John asked out Edith. But, he lacked the courage, so asked a friend to ask her to dance for him. She said she'd dance with him only if he came and asked himself !!! ... Which he did. With the horrors they both must have experienced, the simple act of coming together for a dance still required an act of courage. So glad they found each other and had a long happy life together.

Amazing photographs and all haunting and sad. I've visited Anne Frank's House in Holland. It was back in 1974 when I was 14, I'll never forget it. It was so tiny, to think all those people were crammed in there, hiding. I hope to God there's never ever a world war again. I pity people around the world where there are wars going on.

0:35 oh😢 But the German soldier going against orders, for those who didn’t know, he is that boys uncle, the boy had to stay on the other side as him and his mother were on the opposing side to the man as they were on different sides in the war. However, the soldier is looking around for people who may see him speaking to the little boy, his nephew as he could be told off for being with him🥺

You see the urge to do something nice in these soldiers so that they can remember what not hurting someone feels like. More than anyone a soldier suffers the most in a war as they have to do the horror and also live with it ( If they dont die).

it kinda makes me sad some cultures don’t believe in being photographed , like the Amish, Native Americans etc. I absolutely see the reasoning, but a photograph can be the only way to see through a small a timeless window to connect with someone you otherwise never would have . it’s both beautiful and morbid

AMAZING PICTURES! Hoow - i am from germany and have heard and seen about many super heavy heartbreaking actions people and soldiers have done, to save and rescue, others (HUMAN BEINGS FOR FUCK'S SAKE!) - when this country (my Homeland) was decided into West and East for example ; extreme humanistic things took place - cannot hide my tears anymore, even today! I am crying right now. My personal roots come from Rügen (an Island in East Germany) - my ancestors had to leave their beloved homes - Man, that is hard! *it never were any Gods who helped out - it were and still ARE mortal human beings who did those great things - CHAPEAU! Well done, dear uploader - these realities may never sink into vanish. In german schools we learn to NEVER forget! (i hope the rest of the planet sees this importance, too) Greetings and lots of Health to everyone!

Fantastic, old books and photos are our link with the past. Photos say so much, facial expressions in various situations fascinate me. I feel I’m being spoken to from the past. ‘’Yes, this is what happened to us,! Take care not to let it happen again’’. Of course there are happy photos as well, thankfully.

'The Last Kiss' photo at 2:12 is the Italian sail training ship 'Amerigo Vespucci' leaving it's port in La Spezia on a sail training cruise - not American soldiers going on deployment. Italians like to kiss.
