Many German, Polish and Russian immigrants coming to this country in years past had to learn to speak English but they did so and they flourished. The reason English speaking countries became the power players on the international scale is because of wealth and product. In regards to your last argument...not necessarily so. Both Russia and China are large names in the global economy and boast a large disparity in the economic classes with the lower class dwarfing the middle class. Included...the US wasn't always majorly upper and middle class. It was built over a great many years to be that way by a government that wasn't just serving it's own interests...it was serving the interests of the country as a whole. Hence the economic growth and gain of international power in the past. Have you ever been to places like Zimbabwe, Iraq, Afghanistan and South Africa? I have. There are plenty of places there that haven't come very far on the technological scale. However that isn't a scale of the people. The reason there is a rampant lack of education amongst the populace in quite a few of those places is primarily because of the corruption of their governments limiting their economies which causes the vast level of it's population to be poor and unable to afford an education. That doesn't mean they are all incapable. Just last year a young woman graduated at the top of her high school class and had thirteen different ivy league schools presenting her with full scholarships. Her parents were immigrants from Zimbabwe. William Kamkwamba, the subject of the biography The Boy Who Harvested the Wind (excellent book, I highly recommend it) came from a family who could not afford to send him to school in Malawi.
