My grandma said I lost a distant uncle in WWI. He jumped into a shell hole, and the bottom of it was filled with gas from a gas attack several days previous. He wasn't masked. Another distant uncle wrote home after the Armistice that he'd be home on the next troop ship. He was never heard from again. Family never learned his fate. Probably died on one of the Hell ships full of Influenza victims on the trip back. They were throwing bodies over the side because it was so bad.

Word of advice..... when playing war games, always advance forward. If you stay in an area without moving forward, the enemies will keep coming nonstop. So all you're doing is wasting ammo...... Move Ahead!

Verdun, Tannenberg and now Isonzo are WW1 games that give you the vibe of that warfare... multiplayer games but you can play solo vs bots quite entertaining. Tanks were not very useful but developed quickly and became a key tool in WW2 as you know, similar to airplanes, in WW1 were introduced to warfare and that changed battlefield forever. Take care, Cheers!!

Brian, i found this info on the web: "In 1942, what many consider the last major cavalry charge took place in the Soviet Union. With sabers drawn, about 600 Italian cavalrymen yelled out their traditional battle cry of “Savoia!” and galloped headlong toward 2,000 Soviet foot soldiers armed with machine guns and mortars." "The last successful cavalry charge, during World War II, was executed during the Battle of Schoenfeld on March 1, 1945. The Polish cavalry, fighting on the Soviet side, overwhelmed the German artillery position and allowed for infantry and tanks to charge into the city."

48:40 "You know what sucks? We're just rolling through sandbags. You guys don't know all the effort it takes to make sandbags." Fair enough. You know what else sucks? You're just rolling through farms, barns, houses, walls. These are places that humans live. These humans are your allies. You don't know all the effort it takes to make all these buildings. Just sayin'... I think sandbags are the least of the worries of anybody who actually might want to live here after the battle is over.

Well, I've watched the best part of an hour of this, and while it seems like a real fun game (and I know it's only a game), it's also as much fantasy as fiction. Automatic weapons would have been a luxury the British and Commonwealth troops would have loved, for even the Lewis gun was pretty much only available for aircraft, and it required two men to handle from a fixed base. As for pistols, basically it was only officers who had pistols, and they were standard six-round .45 revolvers. The Mk 4 and 5 tanks weighed 28 tons and had an absolute maximum speed on flat ground of 5mph. There were two versions, the male and female ; the male had two x 2-pdr guns (later 2 x 6-pdrs) and eight crew; the female had six Hotchkiss mgs. While the tanks took the initial advantage in late 1916, that advantage was lost through them being vulnerable to artillery, getting caught in deep trenches, and being stuck in the mud. As a result, they always carried anti-ditching logs, and/or fascines to get over the trenches.Their worst problem was carbon monoxide poisoning and acute deafening from the engines - the crew could only manage short periods without proper ventilation. This game makes the tank behave like whippets, both in forward/reverse movement and in turning - all of which was wholly impossible in the day! Second Worls War tanks couldn't even have managed the game's speeds, except on reasonably flat ground. All of the scenarios I saw during that hour would have been totally impossible for the Mk 5. On that basis, I wouldn't buy this game, purely because it's gone far too far into fantasy.

These were the Harlem Hellfighters of the US Army's 369th Regiment. These guys were true heroes in every sense of the word. When you look up "bad-ass" in the dictionary, it shows a picture of these guys! I am a Navy Veteran, of the Cold War, Panama and Gulf War. Remember these guys on Memorial Day! They had an assortment of machine guns including the Browning M1917 and Colt-Vickers, both water cooled, the BAR just to name a few. They had Springfield 1903s and Lee, Enfield M1917 and Lee-Enfield bolt action rifles. I believe these were the bulk of US small arms. There was the Colt M1911 as well. That crazy paint on the tank was like the so-called "dazzle camouflage" paint scheme. Naval vessels are said to have used it during WWI and WWII. The idea of camouflage was only close to the end of WWII. American tanks were green, and German tanks like Panzers were black or grey. I think in WWI they were just green. I honestly don't remember ever seeing the WWII pictures of "dazzle paint" and ships were always grey, hence the phrase, "Haze gray and under way." NOW we see them all over the internet. I do not know where it came from. I was born in 1962 just about 20 years after the war. I can tell you I have seen lots of WWII pictures and watched the documentaries the World at War which was about the war in Europe, and Victory at Sea about the war in the Pacific. Never saw "Dazzle Paint" until about a year ago. And I did see ships like Destroyers and Battlewagons with a Naval form of camo, with blues gray and black, only after I played Battlefield 1942 which was about 2003. Before that nothing, just gray. Don't know where all that came from. Oh yeah, one last thing. I went to 32nd Street Naval Base and North Island Naval Base several times growing up. On these bases, trucks, buses and even jeeps were all painted gray. Now if there was a "dazzle" paint scheme during WWI & WWII, don't you think we would still be using that paint scheme? I'd be willing to bet.

Right at the start you said you've never seen a tank like that before. Then I guess you've never seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? The movie that properly ended Indy's saga so perfectly that I prefer to pretend the 4th movie never existed and definitely will pretend the 5th movie coming out next year doesn't exist. In any case, the movie built a replica Mk VIII Liberty painted in desert tan . This is an earlier version without the top structure you see in the movie, probably a Mk V since it's painted U.S. Army green. At first, when I saw this tank in the video game I thought it was the same one as in The Last Crusade. Not quite, but very close. The only really visible difference is the small upper structure on the Mk VIII. Edit: Once you got in one, and the drivers are British, I still think it's a Mk V based on the shape. The Brits used them too. I didn't think they painted them the same. 2nd Edit: Nice. At 18:15 the game actually mentions it's a Mk. V tank. Called it!

1:57:55 Yes, they had legit cavalry in WWI. They also had legit cavalry 22 years later in WW2. Yep. September 1, 1939, Krojanty Poland. Nazis invaded and, at that time, Poland had a world-famous cavalry. That night, the Polish cavalry charged a German infantry unit and were victorious. The Germans were dispersed and fled. To my knowledge, that's the last official "cavalry charge" on a battlefield, and it won that battle. Unfortunately for Poland, the Germans followed that up with a whole lot more infantry, including mechanized mobile infantry, and tanks. The Poles were slaughtered. German propaganda said the Polish cavalry charged the tanks. Never happened. They had some anti-tank weapons and tried to fight almost entire by foot but were very overmatched. Most of the cavalry soldiers and their horses were slaughtered. Horses and riders have been used in this century by some third world militaries, though primarily as messengers and scouts. Horse fuel is cheaper than engine fuel. I don't know of anybody that had a "cavalry" or used cavalry tactics, including the famous "cavalry charge" on a battlefield after that one in Poland.

Afghanistan in the Kandahar region mostly. There are a few things wrong with the game historically, and the is a desire to be "inclusive" when its not realistic, but still a good game if you aren't looking for total accuracy. This game was produced in Guilford Surrey a short train journey for me, I went to college there. The graphics are great, the game play difficult, but with better PCs now perhaps it is a better game to play ? The PC I was using at the time is no more, so I am building a new one, it won't be finished until 2023, cost, however it will be better. I'd like to think a local production is a good one and give them another go ! I shall be about 100 meters from there front door on Friday, I wonder if they welcome visitors and maybe suggestions from end users, sales may soar !

The idea of the side mounted guns was to clear the trenches of German soldiers! To make them break so the advancing infantry could kill them as they ran away. The imperial tank museum in London has on on display you actually cannot enter. Think it was the first one ever made, don’t quote me on that. But one of the first off the line.

Personally, I applaud what dice attempted to do with this game. It is hard to convey how war is even to people of the same age and generation as your own. Yeah, pigeons bro. The big problem in WWI was that the technology and range of weapons, and the size of the battlefield, outstripped communications technology. Up til then, a general could sit on his horse and command an entire battle. Artillery had been line of sight. In WWI you had arty firing well behind the lines, and coordination with maneuver forces was shit. That's a big reason for the high casualty count. It was real difficult to coordinate accurate, responsive supporting fires for assaults. And yeah, carrier pigeons were usually the rule. You could string out phone wire, but it would always get cut by arty bombardment. Nobody had portable radios. At least one pigeon I know of was given a medal for heroism.

Bro, in regards to you question about having cavalry keep in mind that tractors (which i personally view as the key to the modern age), hadn't been invented yet, and people were still working their fields with horse drawn plows. The fact that roads were still those mud tracks isn't helping. For further details, watch the WW1 movie War Horse 2011.

We had a somewhat integrated military until Woodrow Wilson came in and gave the separate but equal nonsense. The tank commander sounds British, and I have no idea what their views were of blacks within country. Either like Republicans, seeing them as equal, or like Democrat party, second class citizens. The tank is correct for the time. The air attacks didn't happen until later in the war when the pilots started dropping handheld mortar rounds.

As soon as you spawn, you would die within couple of seconds and start to play as some other poor guy that gets blasted by artillery right away, then you start to play as some other guy and get impaled by bayonet right away. That's closest, most realistic depiction of war you will ever get.

The best WW1 ever made was VERDUN on last gen .Unfortunately a dead game now as skill lvl was high and an awful update yrs later that added AI and changed the hud etc , the trench warfare was brilliant and the way maps worked with advancing or retreating battlelines was genious....if you missed out on this one its too late now , its in my top 3 fps of all time

Realistic ..what a load of BULL. Bi planes firing missiles.. Yeah right! .. Hand held bombs / grenades were dropped from the cockpits of Bi Planes.. about as realistic as Santa Claus
