Wow you guys loved this one alright, Thank you all so much!! Videos like this take a lot of time, writing, editing, and research, so I'm glad to see it pop off so hard in the last year. I hope to make more like this and I am currently working on them, but I would very much prefer to do it un-sponsored and without youtube's ad bullshit constantly ruining the experience for everyone. So please feel free to use ad-blocker, I am not getting money from them in anyway. If you WOULD like to help fund these videos, please feel free to do so through my Patreaon: www.patreon.com/luckyonce I hope you all look forward to more videos in the future! See you all then!

I like that you noticed the difference in tone between the movies and the original tv shows. The series was much more light hearted while the movies were done in the style of the director Mamoru Oshii who went on to do Ghost In The Shell. I preferred the tv series much more. Great review and I hope people search for this title and enjoy it. The way we watched anime in the past was to rent vhs tapes from various places and I was lucky to find Patlabor vhs tapes rented out by a comic book store.

Patlabor is definitely one of the GOATs next to Gundam, Macross, VOTOMS, and Five Star Stories. The world building and storytelling is genuinely good, and the mecha are more than well worth the price of admission.

There it is, the Patlabor video! The waiting was worth it! I loved it! Patlabor is so unique in its portrayal of the mechas and soooooo comfy. I am still amazed that they created a franchise where you could put all the characters in every story you want and it just works. The franchise was lightning in a bottle. All those talented people coming together to create something awesome. The whole creation story behind Patlabor is easily as entertaining as the show. I wanted to add some sidenotes: Patlabor 3 is based on the manga arc WASTED WXIII which is an extended version of the monster episode from the OVA. Yet in the manga, SV2 is heavily involved in investigating the monster and bringing it down. Plus it integrates itself into the Griffon arc. But all those connections and SV2 were basically cut in the third movie... but I still like the movie. It's at least pretty lol. The live action show is an entertaining watch. The vibe is like the tv show (some of the stories are even heavily inspired by some episodes) but the last episode and closing movie have big ties with Patlabor 2, so there the tone shifts to be more in line with the movies. So yeah, thanks for the video!

Well Patlabor is more a slice-of-life show where you watch the crew having problems with tooth ache or what they want to eat. Sure there is mecha action and crimes to solve, but that's not the part of the franchise which is in the foreground (well, at least not in the OVA and TV show).

I found out about the Patlabor movies when watching the GITS dvd extras in 2000. They used shots from the opening battle from Patlabor 2, and I knew I had to see these movies. The score by Kenji Kawai is so wonderful puts the viewer into the right frame of mind. I remember listening to the score on my iPod while taking the limo bus from Narita into Toyko, and it was perfect.

Damn, I could already tell you're passionate about the craft from the second you presented yourself. This is more well shot than most drama channels that talk about fuck all, this is honestly some good stuff man. I think if I had a gripe it was the audio editing. Though there are mechas, I never thought Patlabor as a mecha genre, but more of a Japanese police drama series. This makes the series easier to transition to live action J-Drama because all the elements are there.
@troloinkto
@troloinkto Жыл бұрын
that's how mecha shows work, most people misunderstand the genre, they think it's some kind of transformers with robots talking and silly stuff, most mecha shows have mechas as a tool, as a plot device, as part of the context or the story, but the whole thing doesn't "focus on robots" the same thing they always say about evangelion with the " omg this show is about the characters and not the robots" apply to the 100% of mecha shows actually

With regards to the patlabor EZY project, news has been sparse on the matter but there was a pilot screening in Tokyo for patlabor day IIRC (yes patlabor day is a thing in Japan) and that was it. @@luckyonce also I think one of my comments got removed because of the use of the F bomb on the channel. Whoops sorry about that. Anyway it was basically me saying patlabor 2 is my favourite and the more darker tone is perhaps better explained by the series coming to an end (at least it was perceived as such at the time, if we take into consideration the last patlabor video media released, to my knowledge anyway, was the drama CD, Patlabor The After Days which is set post anime as the SV2 members move on)
@boi1133
@boi1133 Жыл бұрын
@@jaredgup6537 Yeah I loooooove Patlabor 2. And as mentioned I loved how the franchise portrayed the political climate of the time. You really can see the shift from the bubble economy to the bubble crisis. The live action series also shows that the world abandoned the labors because they feel like a dream from better times... And yes Patlabor 2 was the closing for the franchise which also contributed to the darker tone. But I thought it was fitting and really heartbraking seeing it after all the other Patlabor media. Really felt like and ending. For me it's with the New Files my favorite entry of the franchise.

A truely underrated series that deserves more love. I'd like to see more stories in this universe, or maybe like a light novel showcasing what happened to the main cast after the end of the series (both OVA and TV) in more detail. Amusingly I'm one of those fans who loves the TV series despite some of the flaws, and few of it has to do with the writing in my book. A few times due to being on a budget crunch-time TV schedule that some of the action scenes become very 'static moving objects' as opposed to dynamically moving mecha duking it out. Which makes me wish the TV show could get a redo with modern animation but otherwise leave most of what was written intact (aside from any needed updates or improvements to meh concepts). Although sometimes its best to leave a good thing in the past so the modern age doesn't erode it. Not to say I dislike the OVA's, they are the OG's and I LOVE the first two Patlabor movies, they're among my most re-watch anime films and still hold up thirty years later. The third movie, is the only piece of Patlabor media I am very meh on. I don't hate it, but the absolute near removal of the SV2 crew was a BIG mistake, otherwise it's a nice noir detective piece set in the Patlabor universe, but it barely feels like a Patlabor piece of media until the very end.

My exposure to Patlabor has kind of been all over the place. I first saw the second movie, with the dub by Manga entertainment. Sad to say, I felt like I had come in to the franchise too late, and the movie had this feeling that the party had ended a long time ago, and the movie was cleaning up some time later. Thankfully, I managed to watch the original OVAs, and a few tapes of the tv series and the new files. Along the way, I managed to get a few issues of the manga when Viz was releasing chapters as monthly comic books. You covered most of the main cast, but I was kind of disappointed to see that you didn't mention two of my favorite characters from the mechanical crew, the crew chief (aka the Old Man), amd Shigeo (voiced by the incredibly talented Shigeo Chiba), (but you did show clip of him from the Godzilla pastiche episode). I would have to say that my favorite ovas were the Godzilla and Ultraman parodies, although the one about the mechanics staging a revolution wasn't without its charms. If the opportunity came up, I would probably watch all of the ovas, the tv series, and the first movie. It's sad to hear that Wxii (which I had read about in the late 90s as something attached to Izubuchi), turned out so bad.

ALPHONSE! I love the OVA, Noa is such a lovable character, and yes, i like Ota too, he is loud, he is obnoxious, he is a gun nut, but he has a good heart, somewhere, probably at home. Patlabor is amazing and severely underappreciated, especially the OVA, the mecha designs are great, having even some overlap with other franchises. Sadly today we rarely get good mecha shows, the last one i really like was Knights & Magic.

well the guys behind the anime actually know their craft i guess. i mean: the same folks might have actually worked on the ghost in the shell tv series and in the second episode of season one right at the start you can see a HAW 204 and the follow up model HAW 206 mech tanks. and the HAW 204 uses caterpillar tracks that are build into the legs to walk and drive while also being a plausible design.

Its interesting how prevalent the whole "anime girl andd giant robot" trend was back in the day. Quite odd really. Its also funny how back then when they smiled they looked so goofy. Nowadays they are cute wheen they smile and don't look like monkeys. That tangent aside, old school mecha always had the most attention to detail and believability in mecha. Honestly the 80's andd 90's in general was the golden age of detailed, realistic, dark (literally), gritty, down to earth anime. Now everything is almost painfully bright and colorful and all so over the top fantasy. Not to mention the attention to detail on objects is far less.

Funny, while I can see where the two OVAs can be superior to the TV in some regards, I've always like the TV show better, perhaps for it was introduction to Patlabor just watching the Latin American broadcast of Fox Kids, and seeing the commercials that the show was coming and like the design on the Ingram, (looked similar to Tekkaman Blade aka Technoman which I like already) and saw the movies and OVAs a few years later. And like the more comedy driven angle at times, kind of middle ground or mix of Gundam with the Police Academy movies. And liked the flying Griffon over aquatic version. And teh TV and OVA version of the AV-0 Peace Maker over the one on the 1st movie.

This sure was a video on YT, but I'm glad I found it, I knew that name was familiar, and I don't remember the show too much, but I remember now that I watched some of the TV show and really like the idea of this science fiction late 20's Japan where this police woman has this special connection with her mecha police patrol. I kinda like these stories of people humanizing robots and AI especially when they show a wide range of emotion and sentience, and maybe why I don't like Star Wars droids as they are functional but not so sentient tbh, they are kinda stupid even, but yeah glad I chose to doomscroll late at night and being reminded of some beautiful piece of vintage science fiction anime. BTW screw Eva, it's to pretentious and sadly no one wants to make a mecha show where you just got big robots kicking butt for the sake of it, that's why Megas XLR is so precious to me, but there are many other science fiction movies and anime that tackle philosophical and existential themes better than Eva no wonder the Patlabor movies are like a mix bag, screw Eva man, no matter I watched the whole show and EOE as a kid and have a considerable amount of merchandise (Asuka besto girl), screw Eva!

I had a hard time deciding on what footage to use for the opening music video to that section of the video, and what song to pair it with. Originally I wanted to use a specific song from the sound track but it got the video muted

Since you mentioned venting I want to have my turn. I didn't really enjoy the Patlabor OVA. I loved the first 2 films. Especially the 2nd one. I didn't like the goofy nature and for me the slapstick didn't resonate much, it was just a bit too much for me. However I think that is just a taste difference. I HATE the effects of Evangelion on the mecha genre. Evangelion has no right to be as influential as it is. Pre-Evangelion mecha deconstructions in the form of Gundam War in the Pocket are much better as mecha deconstructions. NGE is not bad, but it isn't the greatest anime, I would say far from it. I think Gundam (the original series) handels teenagers in robots better. Patlabor is neat however and it would be nice to see more of it exploring the police aspect.
