Really cool lesson Mark. Growing up in the 80s, Duran Duran was always seen a band built around their looks and style, but man, John Taylor is a hell of a bass player and great to see him getting the respect he is due.

After giving up paying bass for 25 years, I am back at it now and I visit your channel often. Your channel is amazing. I love it ! Thank you for doing what you do. Duran Duran was the first band that I got into as a boy. I never really thought much of their bass playing back then, as I listened to them simply as a fan and not as a musician. Later, in my teenage years, when I got into playing, I got into Iron Maiden, Rush & RHCP and concentrated more on that style and technique, but this is one great bass line. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Respect to John Taylor !

I saw them last week and they did not disappoint.Even my metal head friend who was dragged along by his wife was blown away. After the show he just kept talking about how good the bass was. Requests... During lockdown I watched a view videos of Tony Butler playing his classic Big Country bass lines, and their current bassist trying to learn them, and I never realized how intricate some of them could be.

I never would have guessed, -- but I'm not surprised. Rio, (and Hungry Like the Wolf) are perfect pop songs. During "The Lock Down" John Taylor posted a series of videos, -- talking about how all those songs where composed... I'm stoked to learn that riff!

Funny my band just added this song to our set list to play weeks ago. The drums and the bass are the workhorses of the song but I love this song. I play the keys in the band but used to play bass and occasionally still do. John Taylor definitely is underrated in my opinion

Dude, thanks for this video. People don't realize that John Taylor was probably a Teenager while writing these monster Bass lines. I just seen DD for the first time in Pittsburgh a few months ago. Legends. I was always into playing my Bass with a pick and never tried using my fingers. Now thanks to you I have my homework cut out for me. ✝️👍

thanks for breaking down this song! i heard this song recently and i cant get the bass out of my head and when i tried playing it, it was too much of for me because of the fast tempo. thanks for making backing tracks available for practice because this song seems to have all of the techniques i was struggling with, ghost notes, fast tempos and transition to and from slapping. i hope you can breakdown more songs like this that has multiple techniques incorporated in them (but maybe at a lower tempo?). thanks!

im not sure if you already did a breakdown of "i like it" by debarge but that song seems to incorporate a lot of technique transitions also and from start to finish the bass is prominent in the song. thanks again!

Always LOVED the song but didn't realize how GREAT the bass line was until I wrote a midi track for it. Great harmonies in that song also. Another hidden bass gem is on Alanis Morrisette's You Ought To Know. It surprised me. And, I just found out who played it.

This is one of my favourite bass lines to play and, even after learning it years ago, still gets played every time I pick up a bass to get my fingers warmed up. The only difference in the way I play it is (in the chorus) fretting the D rather than open string. I was sure that's how JT does it. Maybe I'm wrong.

Mark I'm an 80s kid I learnt bass bcos of John Taylor Mark King Pino and even Mick Karn. My go to bass play along playlist in order of popularity is as follows... 1 Girls of Film Night Version 2 Love Games 3 Wherever I lay my hat 4 Everytime you go away 5 I'm gonna tear your playhouse down 6 Something about you 7 Hot Water and 8 Planet Earth Night Version 9 Love to finish on Rio and it's kept me entertained for all these years!!! Another Tune I love playing is Dune Tune by Level 42. Other fun tunes are from UB40 like Please don't make me cry much easier to play but also very satisfying. Take your pick from any of these greats would love to see vids on any of the above if you haven't already, especially my no.1!!! (saw ur love games vid btw great breakdown)

Your a legend Mark Fratello. I would love for you to breakdown the Whole Album from HERBIE HANCOCK " LIVE IN CHICAGO 1977, FEATURING JACO PASTORIOUS ". This is my most treasured Album of all time. It sounds like a lot to breakdown but it is just Really 4 songs if you do not include the Frist song that is a DJ Intro. So the first song of my request that ROCKS the Bass as it should sound like is " Chameleon " Second song is " Hang Up Your Hang-Ups " Third song is " " Maiden Voyage ". Lastly " It Remains To Be Seen " You asked for some requests so I wanted to give you feed back. You may be thinking. No way. But Mark this is what the Bass should be played like in my opinion. This is real music brother. The best of the best. From the Greats. The legends. The Masters of Music. Love ya Mark. You are a true Living 🙏Legend doing what you are doing. Sharing the warmth of your Heart to the Globe through the sound of THE FAT BASS. Love ya Fratello Bello. Saluti Amico. 🤍💜💙💚💛🧡❤ Edited sorry for the miss print ...

This one has been a favorite of mine, and it took me quite a while to get under my fingers when I learned it [redacted] years ago. Even though you hadn't released a lesson on it at the time, it was really watching all the material you had published on fundamentals and music theory that enabled me to figure it out by watching the various folks who had covered it on YT. I figured it was in E-minor, but one thing that always baffled me was why the G was sharp in the chorus riff?! It sounded right, but...? So, looking at your staff at bottom right, there is a key change to F-minor in the chorus. Dang that is subtle, at least to my ear. Apart from the G being "sharp" and "sounding right", I can't really hear a key change there at all.
@DruEllz
@DruEllz Жыл бұрын
The chorus is in E major, hence the G#.
@kedb
@kedb Жыл бұрын
@@DruEllz Ah! Right. I guess that makes more sense, given the other notes in the chorus. I just saw the 4-flats on Mark’s staff notation at bottom right of the video, and then googled which key has 4-flats (because alas I’m not a very accomplished sight reader!), and the answer came back F-minor. So is that an error on the staff, or…?
@DruEllz
@DruEllz Жыл бұрын
@@kedb there are 4 sharps (#) not flats (b) on the stave/staff in the video which means E major or C# minor. I've only been re-learning theory for a year or two. Decided it was about time after forgetting everything I learnt as a kid and winging it for 3 decades!
