This was the last track built to Brunel’s specifications. Although it was the most efficient width (as the greatest engineer in history designed it) the entire GWR network was converted to standard gauge over the weekend of 21-22 May 1892. Our bit was done in just over 14 hours by 80 men working in 3 gangs.

I now live in Sydney Australia, but when I see this footage I get so homesick. I usually visit each year but with the pressure of work hav'nt visited for over four years. I was already to come this year but Covid put pay to that. I wish everyone well and stay safe in these unprecedented times. Longing for St.Ives

Very well filmed - makes me want to visit. The train seems to have plenty of passengers now.

Yes, very popular with over 750,000 passenger journeys in 2019.

St Ives, my first taste of Cornwall in 1957. By bike having ridden from Bristol after train from Manchester. Still magical place and lucky enough to have lived on North Cornwall coast for many years and not too far away to visit regularly.

Very well 'mined' captured, researched and documented historical video. Fantastic editing work. Visually -- your storytelling helps put things in perspective. Sadly, though it also captured a little, all TOO well just how much industrialization and modernization doesn't always achieve the 'best' outcome!! Sometimes you lose a bit if yourself in the long run :( .

The engine shed may have been closed but you're looking at the goods depot. The engine shed was in the other direction.

Beautiful place, been there hundreds of times. What a tragedy it would have been if that line was closed by beeching as that train is jam packed day in day out through the summer.

St Ives branch line has a single track. Runs every half hour daily and public holidays except Christmas 🎅 Day and Boxing 🥊 Day. Certain journeys terminates in Penzance happens in the evenings where rest of other days terminates and commences from St Erth because the train drivers don’t have the time to travel 🧳 via St Erth to Penzance because it’s every half hour journey between St Erth and St Ives. Connections happen at St Erth. 😄 They are worked by 2 car class 150/2.

On 20 May 2020 a delegated decision by planning officer approved the removal of the grade II listed Victorian footbridge at St Erth (shown near start of this). Its fate was probably sealed by the new P & R scheme but it’s a shame an underpass was not feasible for those with disability/mobility issues.

The other line that goes through St Erth station is the main line from London Paddington to Penzance. Some of the trains to/from London do stop there which is a bit odd considering how close it is to Penzance.

Thanks, there are a couple of continuity issues, but it's hard with just one camera and the British weather :-)

I will be arriving at St Erth station, on 1st June 2019...2 weeks on Saturday. We come down from the Midlands each year for our annual sojourn to the south west...firstly a for a two night stay in Plymouth then onwards to St Ives for a week ! Lelant is now a request only stop isn't it?
@Cornishpastyman

I'm not sure. 1st June is when the new Park and Ride from St Erth opens and the Lelant Saltings P & R closes, so it may well be that there original Lelant reverts to being a regular stop. We'll know more soon.

been on this a few times ,arrogant staff at times and dirty train windows ruin photographs of the journey ,the park and ride now charge both for parking and the train so now very expensive ,we take the car now and park where we can in town ,the council has missed the point in all this but while ever people cough up why should they care
@Cornishpastyman

Agree they could easily clean the windows more often. The Park and ride costs what it cost, it's an expensive facility to build and maintain.

@@Cornishpastyman it is more about cash cow tourists ,Bath have a bus park and ride you park for free if you buy a return bus ticket £2.50 each return it is a double deck bus and a great view of the city on the 20 min ride into the centre and they run every 30mins. as for the staff at st erith i had to go to the ticket office as the parking machines were not working but she told me they were and i must be doing it wrong i told her it was not and had dont it right and again she said i was wrong,fortunately the man behind me said he is right i couldnt get a ticket either and the person behind him said the same ,she stormed off if a huff to check it ,she never came back ,will never use it again
