The intro about why people read extreme horror makes so much sense. Most people just want to be comfortable when it comes to art. But you can't grow as a person just being comfortable. So get uncomfortable and read some extreme horror ! Haha

Meg, thank you so very much for posting such an amazing process and review of Burner. I greatly appreciate it! I'm glad that you... hmm... "enjoyed" doesn't really sound right, does it? I'm glad the "experience" of reading Burner was what you were looking for. I'm so sorry you've been going through so many health issues, but glad it seems like you're on the other side and healing. Thanks so very much!

Reading things that scare you sh1tl3ss is actually kind of a coping mechanism. The psychological explanation is that by exposing yourself to what you fear, by choice and in a way you consider safe, you are kind of taking control over it. This is why people who suffered traumas often end up writing, drawing or reading about it (sometimes even reenacting it with people they trust), it's an effort to process it, a way to take control back so it's perfectly sane behaviour actually, even if regular people doesn't get it (or doesn't want to get it)

Okay, you got me. I went on Pango and bought a copy of Burner. I love real life, true crime horror. That's what gets me. My biggest fear is being "serial killed". I am just getting into Extreme Horror, but this sounds up my alley. It sounds like Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter on a way, but obviously a different genre. Can't wait.

I love to read, but I still have an issue where I can't seem to stay focused on a book for more than a couple of hours at a time (even if I am enjoying it). Burner made me so anxious that I seriously could not continuously read it for more than fifteen minutes or so at a time. Thanks for introducing me to this book! It was really brutal and just so emotionally powerful that I won't soon forget it.

I Just finished Burner. It is very well written and the Story is clever constructed. But I would Not say this is extreme horror. It's more like a harder psychological thriller. Event thought there is physical torture, the psychological consequences are far more severe and shown in the outcome of the Story. The subject matter is a tough one though. But it did Not shocked me nearly as much as expected. I gave it 4 Stars. (I'm sorry for my Englisch, it is Not my native language)
@ReadingWithMeg

Yeah I still consider the psychological books like this extreme horror because of the content matter. Is it weird that I don't think of extreme horror as necessarily scary. Like, it makes me cringe, sure... but it's psychological horror that really gets under my skin and keeps me up at night. I only recently learned about the Splatterpunk genre. Triana's Full Brutal was my baptism in Splatterpunk. What a twisted ride. Had to put it aside the first time I started it. Something about the cruelty of breaking a person for the fun of it made me feel really grossed out. Glad I gave it a second chance. The writing is actually really well executed and the storyline is strong. Not sure if I will dive into Burner immediatly, but there's a lot to discover. :) I wish you all the best and stay strong.
