** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Gliperal. That is a puzzler's most terrifying name.
Today he returns to the channel with a puzzle themed around pentominoes. It's ruined our testers and has very few solves on Logic Masters Germany. Can Frodo (Simon) get to Mount Doom without Gliperal's eye spotting him?
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
Divide the grid into pentominoes, such that no two pentominoes of the same shape (including rotations and reflections) touch orthogonally. Clues outside the grid indicate the number of borders between pentominoes present in that row or column. [A pentomino is a set of 5 orthogonally-connected cells.]

I find that comment at 1:20:49 really encouraging, because I did set this puzzle as a sort of introductory puzzle for it's big brother, to teach the solver some new ideas. I was really glad to see you work through the logic with the 2 clue, which suggested something similar might apply to the 3 clue, which set you thinking about the 4 clue, exactly as I was hoping. It would seem that, in including all the desired logic, I did not exactly succeed in making an approachable puzzle (whoops), but I think it is one that is well-suited to the channel. It's interesting what you say about the most terrifying name in the puzzle world, and I think that's because I constantly strive to find new logical ideas, and force solvers to kick out of autopilot and look at things in a different light. And unfortunately that means most of my puzzles find their way into your inbox, because, Simon, you are really good at uncovering new logical ideas. I think this solve is testament to that: You found all of the desired steps with dividing the grid into multiple-of-5-sized regions, and more and more quickly as the solve progressed. A couple steps were even cleaner than the way I had visualized them. The only bit of logic I want to point out is at 1:13:52, where the easier way to progress is to see that green has to take R10C3 or else it becomes an L. Also I take no offence at the implication that I have a myriad of all-seeing-eyes surveying my domain. It matters not that you conquered the mountain at the end; it simply tells me that you are ready for me to make something even more challenging...

Something worth noting - now that we can enter letter marks in the solving software that can be super useful for Pentominous and related puzzles, if you have a partial region you know the shape of but not its exact position (e.g. the "I" in row 1) you can put the matching pentomino letter in one of the cells of that partial region to help keep track...

I didn't expect Gliperal to be the name, wow, here I was thinking something akin to Phistomefel or Shye, perhaps SudokuExplorer or RockyRoer, I'd even go so far as to say Undar Beyond. Now I'll see if it truly is the most terrifying name in the Puzzle world. Edit: I'm already taken back by the ludicrous simplicity and the lack of clues. So it does feel a bit mortifying currently. Edit2: I gave up after 30 minutes, my head hurts...

Gliperal created this one, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLCdepeAuZ2Wkac.html, which I think is the hardest puzzle I've ever seen on the channel. As he put it in the comments of that video: "No testers could solve it, I had to create a solution guide to even get it validated, and at the time of this video going live it still has only 3 solves on LMD." [LMD = Logic Masters Germany] Also a video which the channel called "The Hardest Sudoku Of All", which has a 2h18m runtime, although it doesn't stand out in my head quite as strongly as the rosette one.

This was quite beautiful and novel, I enjoyed it, thanks! I was lucky enough to figure out the logic with the first two rows pretty quickly, which allowed me to solve this in half of Simon's time. Just sitting there and trying to fit pentominoes in various ways for a couple of minutes till it clicked helped, even though it could be probably considered a sort of bifurcating I guess. But when dealing with maths problems, it often helps to try things out randomly to better understand what's going on before going back to formulating a formal proof.

Finished in exactly 1 hour. Pentomino puzzles are always fun. I'd love to see more of these. I knew the P at the top had to be paired with an N because it could only be disambiguated with a Y in column 6, but I channeled my inner Simon and waited until I found the logic to prove that Y pentomino. I also really liked the end, where the 'odd' clue resolved the final three pentominoes.

In viewing this video, I've come to the realization I really find the term "setter", for these luminaries of pen puzzle and sudoku creation, to be deeply insufficient. In watching puzzles from Gliperal, Shye, Phistomefel or others, I much prefer borrowing the term used by chess competitions, "composer". Just like a musical composer, each creator has their own unique notes and throughlines that make their puzzles connected and 'familiar'. Gliperal's signature 'the grid inexorably allows you only one way forward, should you find it and comprehend its whispers' is ultimately sort of a different signature from Phistomefel's 'have you therefore grasped the full implications of this ruleset, and if not, are you willing to take my hand on a magical journey of comprehension?', much like a piece from Beethoven is unmistakably different from one from Tchaikovsky.

@ 1:14:00 - Green needed to take 2 of 3 cells there. I think an easier approach was to consider if r10c3 WASN'T Green.... That would have more directly forced green into the L shape touching the grey L. So r10c3 has to be green. You can work around clockwise getting up each pentomino to 5 cells: Purple needs to take r10c1 and r7c2. The column 1 and 3 Blue "I"s need to take r5c1 and r5c3. Grey then needs to take r4c3. Looking at r7c4, it can't be Green since it'd make an L touching the purple L, so r7c4 is yellow. Green needs to take r10c5, leaving r5c5 for the last I.

Simon had a logical reason for every time he filled in a cell with a single colour. It could never be a different pentomino. So it's a unique solution. (Also, it's the same solution I reached, although I got there by a slightly less elegant route.)

Ironic that one of Simon's first comments in the video is Gliperal's Eye on top of a tower. And one of the first deductions is there's an "I" at the top of the puzzle.

Fairly enjoyed that one. I didn't find it too hard although I had quite a lot of brain fog when it came to placing the I in row 3. 5 minutes of thinking I had broken the puzzle until I got the answer and felt a bit stupid.

I like the way you solve this puzzle, but the best thing is the set of colors... I'm colorblind, so green and orange aswell as purple and blue look absolutly identical. So there are so many 10 or more cell regions 😂 thanks

Lovely puzzle, first time solving one of CTC's hour+ long videos. Picking up the multiple of 5 trick early really helped power through it. One interesting observation that I tried to avoid relying on, was that the pentomino you made Red in the 3 column, had to be a Y or S (I think that is an S) to solve to top of the puzzle.

N is the new Y? @ 44:55 you claim that the third colour (blue) must be in R3, but that's not necessarily true at that point. For instance, red could be a V extending two more cells into R3, orange could be a P, and blue could make an appearance in R4 with a W starting in R4C7. I think you would have been better considering the other two three clues before embarking on the right hand side. You couldn't repeat the trick you did for the 3 clue in R6, because you couldn't make the cells to their narrow sides be mod 5. Therefore, there could be borders between R1 and R2 in C2 & 4. This places the I in R1, and gives an L at the right of R1/2. Had you done this first, it cuts down the options for red/orange/blue. After getting the I in R3, you could have finished off the left half. The 3 clues meant that there was a barrier down those columns, with each containing just two colours. This means there must be an I in each of C1, C3, and C5. This means there can't be an I in C6, so there must be a Y and an L. The 5 clue in the column means that the Y will take two of the remaining three borders, so the foot of the L must be at the top or bottom. Since it can't go at the top, we know the L is at the bottom, and the Y on top. This forces a TL at the top on the left, and LT at the bottom, and a P and N in the top two rows. The 5 clue in C7 means there can only be one colour between the foot of the L and the branch of the Y. This is at least four cells long, but can't be four, because it touches both L and Y, so it's another I. This resolves the position of the Y branch. Now the lower 7 clue is complete, so there's a run of three cells at the end of the row, which encloses a ten cell area, so it can't extend upwards. The rest is simple. Very nice puzzle. I liked the way that reducing a section down to just two colours formed a wall, with the count of the walled-in cells dictating the possibilities. I also liked the way the 2 clue introduced this idea, making the puzzle pretty approachable.

Now when I've played in your app with some puzzles I've realized a big flaw. The battery percentage isn't visible. Just had the phone at 3% when someone wrote and interrupted me, so I saw that my phone were dying. It had 45% when I started. But a white background in over an hour drains a lot...

What is wrong showing videos on failed atempts solving a puzzle? I would definatly watch these, analyze and maybe find the point where things went wrong. Also it would show that you are a mortal as we all who just watch. Showing a video on a failed attempt would even raise my respect and not lowering it as i can see you feel so selfconfident knowing that showing a failure will not make you look like a fool. Dont be afraid of that. Not at all.

They do show some "fails" as in mistypings and times when they'd made a false assumption at some point in the puzzle, or just missed a possibility, but these are still cases where tracking back to where you've been can aid in seeing where you went wrong and give a satisfactory end. Solves where they fail to complete are probably the kind that never really get rolling at all, and a complete halting just doesn't really give anyone anything, other than the people who want to then go in the comments to tell what should've been done, which just doesn't amount to really being kind.
