its always nice to see composites used in stuff like this, im training to be a technician for composites but i have never heard of the fabric used for the bottom of the deck. is it like fiberglass mat or something? thats what it looks like to me, whatever it is its probably not used in the industry

Came here to say this. Most big fibreglass yachts (sunseeker, princess etc) hulls are the same kind of foam with a handful of layers of fibreglass either side. The foam in the board looked quite dry though which is probably why the carbon top layer delaminated as there wasnt enough resin to soak into the foam.

Well flax is more sustainable than regular wood.. although I'm not too sure about the carbon fibre or foam lol

Actually i used viton for that in motor mount brackets made of carbon

Should ask the guy to get a sheet of viton to add a layer inside it will stop that vibration in your feet and legs on rough roads

The foam actually adds ridgity , it prevents torsion

Without the foam it would twist and flex , depending on the fiber orientation aswell

I worked on P1 race boats and the high density foam in the core is super strong and used for transom of a lot of boats as well. Especially when the foam is epoxied over w carbon fiber matting. Super durable

I do a lot of stuff with composites having been a commercial fisherman for years and years and having to do repairs on old fiberglass boats. Redid decks and cabins with foam core which made it every bit as strong as when we used plywood for the core but way more lightweight. Also way less prone to getting waterlogged. Made speaker enclosures and other things like that using foam core too. Lots of options for core material with various pros or cons. A skateboard made with a carbon fiber honeycomb sandwich material might be really cool.

balsa deforms permanently. after the first impact, it would not bounce back. where as serin soaked foam has springback. example; if you crush balsa or other soft woods in a vice, when you release the pressure, the wood does not return any volume. if you do the same with the rsf it gives 'springback' or "retrunsa to shape" more often.
