Found the detail in the wiki regarding religious reform and why you weren't able to despite having neighbors with the institution. "Ensuring that this Feudalism bleeds over to a neighbor one could then meet the key requirement to reform (it must be an Animist neighbor - as Mayan and Nahuatl are deemed primitives - who has embraced the Feudalism institution; hence force convert a few neighbors to animist to hasten this process)." It also seems you adopt the government type of that neighbor? So if you reform with Castile or Portugal as a neighbor you become an absolute monarchy and with England you would get a parliament government type.

My Aztec vassal juggling trick was to take more than 5 vassals by fully annexing some of them so I only had 5, then pass the reform, then release the other vassals. I could rush the reforms fast.

one tip if you are at max points as a native you can do a couple things you can hire generals with mil for army prof, you can promote mertnilisium with dip and boost stab and reduce if with admin and a non migetory tribe you can also develop your provinces with your points

I for one also love playing Natives and in SE Asia. Had a killer Aztec run once and managed to take over the British Isles, but couldn’t finish Sunset Invasion in time. Would love to see how you do it and then give it another spin

You indeed have to full-annex a overlord to get their vassals for free. PUs are the reverse, the junior partners go free if the senior partner is full-annexed but they become junior partners of the new senior partner if the former senior partner is itself force PU'd.

Beh...North american settled tribes thats who truly underrated. If you know how this (bad) federation mechanic works, you can have like ~1600dev (or around 70% of North America) in 1510y without fighting and conquering any land. Yea its boring, but real ""diplo""" gameplay.

I'm quite consistent with uniting mesoamerica as Aztecs but oftentimes I'm diplomatically isolated because all colonizers (France, GB, Spain, Portugal) hate me that they gang up on me whenever. It's annoying. I don't want to convert to christianity, that's boo-boo.

Vassalize the nomads in north and south is better, when you annex them get maps and if you give them feudalism, they reform into monarchys and all stupid tribal land transform in normal provinces, i never play with Aztecs but looks funnier than Incas or Mayans.

Im still more of an inca fanboy cuz I think you get ahead more. When I play inca it will be 1510 and ive conquerored half of mexico and have reformed already since euros colonize brazil/columbia earlier.

I think the Aztecs are one of the most rated nations in EU4, but alright ;)
