The humble #tone knob is possibly the most under-used control on the #guitar. Here's why you should be making use of it to dial your guitar in with your amp.

Great video John. I gigged for many years with a single pickup Gordon Smith. Tone control was always on the move. There is a cool Guitarist magazine one pickup video from a few years back with Chris and Nev, well worth a watch if you haven't already seen it.

Have to take my metaphorical hat off to you John, this simple technique has this evening seriously improved the tone of my ‘T-Style’ guitar.

I play a 2 humbucker Strat, and the top tone control is the only knob I use; and I use it all the time.

Being predominantly a Strat player, I always mod my vintage style guitars so that the tone control works on the bridge pickup. I have always tamed the bridge pickup by using this control.

I got an incredible fuzz tone on a recording by having a humbucker guitar with tone on zero into a Boss DS-1. Sounded like early Kinks.

Great tone hint, John! Not having numbers on my Tele knobs and liking a visual reference, I found the sweet-spot range - if that can be a thing - and positioned the screw so it can be seen at each end of the arc. I recently heard about disconnecting the tone pot from the neck pickup, dialing-in the amp and then working the tone on the bridge pickup. That sounds like a good idea imho. Just occurred to me that “tone” is an anagram of “note”. Now there’s a thought 🍻

Initially I always had my tone on 10, never touched it, but overtime started messing with it. I still mostly have them at 10 or 0 But that’s because that’s where I like it, which I discovered by using them I am not afraid to experiment with the tone control, especially when playing with others

It's took me far too many years to discover that you can do an awful lot more with a guitar and amp by not starting with the guitar controls all on 10. These days I have my guitars fitted with treble bleeds and start with volume & tone(s) on 7-ish, set up the amp and then tweak from there. Playing live, it's much easier to adjust your vol or tone on the guitar than to jump on yet another pedal or to get to your amp controls when you need a bit "more" or even (god forbid) "less". It's also the case that there are sounds that you can get with the guitar controls turned down that can't be had with everything on 10. Check out Jeff Beck's typical set-up for example.

I've always wondered what those knobs were for. ;)

Not on my guitars! I use the tone control much more than the volume control.....then again, I do a lot more variety in styles than most other people. I do also dial in my amp for each guitar that I grab to play or record. As far as I am concerned...there is no single setting on an amp that will be perfect for each guitar.....or for each Song or Tune.

Don't know if it's just having 'rubbish' guitars, but all the tone controls I've ever had do about 90% of their change between 0-1 and then barely change from 2-10. As a result I just can't be bothered using it. I'm of the EVH opinion that the volume is the tone control ;) I actually have that exact same guitar coming (hopefully) tomorrow, so will be interesting to check it out and see if it changes my mind :)

One of the cheapest and most effective mods you can do on a guitar is to change pot, capacitor and resistor values. If the controls don't work the way you want, get it to a decent tech and change the electrics to suit you. It's a lot cheaper than changing pickups or buying more guitars.

How do you know what your guitar sounds like if you never use the tone pot?

Seems like a very sensible solution, especially if you gig with multiple guitars and you don’t have time or don’t want to interrupt flow while changing guitars and tone. Does the NUX horseman change anything besides boosting the volume for leads?

It adds more gain/sustain. It can add/reduce treble too (if you mess with the pedal's tone knob). But if you leave everything at 12 o'clock, you just get a perfect boost (from an "edge of breakup" tone) for soloing. It gives you YOUR sound, but just a bigger, louder, ballsier version of it 👍

I am hearing impaired as a result of many factors ( industrial noise, abusive ex's etc. ) not exclusively as a result of playing in bands for 40 yrs. As a result guitar tone is a challenge these days. Unfortunately in my case, tone controls are as much use as a trap door in a canoe.
