Season 8 of the Walking Dead is pretty polarizing among the fans of the show. To some it’s a great crazy action-packed season, and to I’d say most others, it’s one of if not the worst season of the show. I was more in line with the latter half of people, I still am, but there are a few bright spots in Season 8, including what I believe to be the most underrated episode of the entire series.

dwight definitely did daryl dirtier than tara, tara only knew denise for a couple months maybe, daryl got imprisoned naked at the sanctuary, was fed dog food sandwiches and was forced to listen to that "easy street" song on repeat. i just feel like someone trying to break u down mentally and take away all ur dignity is way worse than killing someones new girlfriend. EDIT: Dwight also backstabbed Daryl and took his crossbow and bike, when they first introduced Dwight.

THANK YOU!!! Rick had been cut, sliced and stabbed with tainted weapons numerous times. Daryl put dirty arrows in his mouth. And one very definitely time Sasha slashed Abraham on th3 shoulder with a knife that was covered in walker guts but now ALL OF A SUDDEN you can have "tainted weapons"?🙄 I knew it was a storyline from the comic but I has assumed they wouldn't use it on the show because they’d already established that infection didn't spread that way. ...That is, until it was convenient for a set piece in a single episode. What about when Rick stabbed himself clean through the center of his palm fighting Wendall or whatever that trash people zombie was called? Forget turning. He should have gotten tetanus too, LOL! This storyline made no sense. Thank you for being a voice of reason!

I just think the main difference is the depth of the wound, like getting slightly grazed is definitely gonna have a different effect than getting full blown stabbed, with a focus on the blood to blood contact causing sickness rather than just blood in the mouth (which we have seen happen before with no effect)
@Mr_Cellophane
@Mr_Cellophane 11 ай бұрын
I also think it's semi lazy but speaking from a perspective of someone who gets cuts and scrapes all the time. If they don't get cleaned they will get infected. Period. And the deeper and dirtier a wound is, it's guaranteed to get infected without antibiotics. Now layer on top of that, the highly infectious virus on top of the rotting flesh and blood introduced into the wound. Chances are, it would make someone get super sick, and eventually die due to the walker fever always associated with turning. The reason I agree it's a plot hole is because of the inconsistencies in that logic. Like some references above would note, Abraham getting sliced by a blade that literally went through a walker en route to him. The amount of times main characters would get cut, stabbed, scratched etc... whilst also being covered in walker blood and nothing would come from it. It's just plot armor and lazy writing imo.
@The_Real_deBizzle
@The_Real_deBizzle 11 ай бұрын
My biggest issue with the walker weapons is that they're just one giant continuity error. Like we've seen several instances where they have gotten walker blood in their mouths, or where they've been fighting walkers with open wounds, or been cut by weapons that have been used to kill walkers, and they came out fine. But now, when its convenient for the plot, the blood actually infects people, but only in this instance and nowhere else in the show.

You’d think Daryl would learn that revenge has only gotten people he loves killed, he had to go out there and find Dwight which got them captured, he had to punch negan which got Glenn killed, he nearly blew a hole through the sanctuary which would get innocents killed, he made a plan with Maggie to kill negan in season 9 which got rick inadvertently killed, revenge made him stupid, not only as a character but as a person, which is why I like that he spared Dwight and eventually worked with negan.

They each have great character arcs and plotlines. Ezekiel going from arrogant king to just some guy is pretty good. Carol goes from abused housewife to a strong, independent old person. And Morgan goes from dad in apocalypse to crazed madman, to a peaceful man, and this repeats. It's in character for Morgan, as he is very obviously split between crazy and zen. @@IMADINOSAURNOTABIRD Carol has her character development, but I can't stand Morgan who decided to let the leader of the wolves live on the claim that "all lives are precious" and not kill a single wolf 🤓, then 5 episodes later goes crazy and tries to kill everyone. Really a delusional character that I can't connect with. As for Ezekiel, that who the hell cares how his name is spelled. A bad character who half of his essence is wooing Carol and let's not talk about him trying to kiss Michonne 💀. He is a failed warrior and leader, who led all his soldiers into the open and had them all killed. He let his entire army trust him and call him "king" as if he was some god, how self-aware. Every time these characters appeared on my screen I just asked myself "where are Rick and Daryl that will make this episode better?".

I think people are confused about Walker guts because in other episodes before and after people are perfectly fine after being injured by infected weapons. But honestly I don’t care about the logistics because this is the best episode of season 8. I do wish we could’ve grieved Carl a little more but that’s just a personal gripe with the writing.

I, personally, think it's just too large a plot hole to gloss over. It's made even worse by the fact that this same plot hole exists in the comics, and the writers made absolutely NO effort to fix it (or just avoid it entirely). I remember being SO frustrated with the writers for including this dumb plot line.

The logic of the infected weapons means that the cut should've killed abraham

I definitely agree this episode is underrated. The fight itself was great and someone turning and killing as everyone sleeps was a great callback to the flu outbreak in season 4 episode 2 at the prison. I would say this episode is my favorite episode of season 8, followed by Worth and The Key and Some Guy was great, too. Sad thing is the battle in this episode was better than the battle in the season finale. And I agree that Daryl was being too stubborn this season. I get him being like this with Negan after he killed Glenn and he has a bad history with Dwight but sooner or later you would think he would learn to trust Dwight and become less willing to kill the saviors and more regretful toward it, like Maggie was after killing Savior Dean in the midseason finale. Not to mention Henry unlocking the pen and walking in was really dumb.

For me the whole "was the cost worth it" and the moral dilemma of the war was immaterial. It was literally a war for survival and freedom from tyranny. The characters had suffered so much for years in the apocalypse and fought with blood, sweat and tears to build a safe community, a refuge from the anarchy, only for the Saviors to come along and make their lives a misery. All the Saviors were depicted as immoral assholes that just pillaged and murdered without mercy, and even though Negan had his code a reasons for doing things, the Saviors were just like rabid dogs he kept on a leesh, and he relished in the power he had over others and living a life of luxury while he kept his subordinates in constant terror and servitude. If they had put any effort into showing that not all Saviors are bad and that it was possible to coexist in peace, that there was a way to make things better other than going to war and putting their lives on the line because its better to risk everything than to live under Negan's boot, then the theme mightve worked. Hell, they spent the entirety of season 7 showing why the war was necessary and everyone preparing for it. Although the collateral damage of war and keeping a level head instead of just going in guns blazing is important, I never felt like this was the case. The protagonists had a very strategic plan for taking down the Saviors and only wanted to kill who they had to and Negan, they never wanted to kill ALL the Saviors, especially not the innocent ones and the workers, but then they start playing it like they did and were letting it become about revenge rather than the greater good, and Carl suddenly becomes this prophet of peace trying to convince Rick to put away his gun and that they can all work together, but that was always the fucking plan, and it's only after he dies that Rick spirals and kills any Saviors that get in his way and becomes fixated on the war, trying relentlessly to kill Negan and even killing escaped POWs that were helping them. Then he reads the letter, then he cuts Negan's throat, and THEN he has a change of heart and decides to let him live, to be a symbol of the new world they're trying to build. It's executed so poorly and was so unnecessary, because the only way to peace was to fight and overcome the Saviors because they stood in the way of that peace

I don't agree with you when it comes to Daryl's character development. I think this season is what really shaped him into everything that he became. He was abused as a child. Trust is something you must earn and something you should never lose with him. He grew up never being able to trust his father or his own brother , so it makes perfect sense why he did not trust Dwight. Dwight was the person that fed him dog food everyday . Dwight was the person that shot someone that became a sister to him her in the eye with his crossbow. (the same bow he stole and betrayed Daryl with after he had spared him & Sheri's lives) Dwight was the person that destroyed his first chance of finally feeling like he had a family and was worthy of a happy life. Daryl had seen nothing but the very worst of the saviors. After watching what they did to him and everyone he loved, you'd be crazy too expect any different. In Daryl's eyes, if he would have killed Dwight and Sherry in that forest, Denise would still be alive. He blamed himself for it and it's something he was never going to look past. Which was why he told hem when everything was over he was still going to kill him. Like with Negan, you don't get to commit 1 million atrocities to people, then do something nice, and then expect everyone to magically forget everything you did.

I never understood peoples issue with the Saviors plan, as you said it worked with the group succumbing to the fever...but also pretty sure the knowledge that everyone is infected is still limited knowledge? I could be wrong (someone remind me?) but I didn't think Simon knew what Rick and the main group do about the infection and Walkers? So him having this plan still made sense, what didn't make sense was nobody waking up from The Walkers coming down stairs like they do 😂

I watched Season 8 weekly and I remember it being a chore to get through every week and I really started to feel let down by just everything in general cause this conflict never really felt like an actual war and it never really had any big climactic moments like we were all hoping for/expecting and that’s just one of the reasons why I think Season 8 was so bad but honestly, this episode even when I watched it back then did stand out to me, and I loved Negan’s plan of coating there weapons in walker guts. After hearing your recap I definitely agree this episode was the best episode of Season 8 and honestly one of the only good parts of Season 8. The episode still has its lows (like with Daryl as you mentioned) and also I’ll still never change my mind on how bad of a decision it was to kill off Carl Grimes so still feeling that in these episodes is still terrible, but other than all that, this episode was still really good. Another episode from this season that I thought was good was Episode 4. I have to disagree with you on Daryl’s arc in Season 8. Everything Daryl does in this season springs from deep seated trauma and guilt. Daryl comes from an abusive background in which he was the scapegoat for both his father and brother. He has grown over the years, but everything about his encounters with Dwight sends him back to the dark days of his childhood. He tries to help people he views as vulnerable and they betray him. Dwight steals his motorcycle, his crossbow and eventually his vest, items emblematic of Daryl’s identity. Daryl feels guilty that he alerted Dwight to the existence of the safe haven of Alexandria, which puts the entire community in danger. He feels responsible for Denise’s death. That guilt drives him to seek out Dwight, even if he knows it’s a fool’s errand. He feels responsible for Glenn’s death. As a captive of the Saviors he is plunged back into a similar dynamic to his abusive family of origin: the scapegoat to a narcissistic Negan, with Dwight as the enabler. Degradation, starvation/malnourishment, humiliation and sleep deprivation are all classic torture tactics. Once freed from the Saviors Daryl is consumed with vengeance and why would he not be? When he considers Dwight all he can see is betrayal and his own mistakes. Just as Daryl only truly began to grow after the deaths of his family of origin, he is repeating a pattern he understands on a visceral level: he will only be free when his abusers are dead. He will eventually mature past this mentality, but in Season 8 & part of 9, he can’t see past his need for justice, vengeance and the need to relieve his own guilt. It can be difficult to watch, but it is relatable and human. Otherwise a good analysis 😊

Because Rick reaches his breaking point. Rick sees Morgan's psycho nature and understands that the loss of Duane brought him there. He now personally is experiencing the same loss that Morgan felt. He already knows that he could easily become crazy like Morgan. Rick breaks his own word to the saviours and realizes that he has gone too far. The second half of the episode is cool on paper but I don't think it makes all that much sense. If the wounded are the people who turn, then surely doctors (or at least the people with basic medical experience) would be checking on them frequently to ensure their condition doesn't worsen. If they are even at risk of dying from the fever or the wounds themselves then the doctors (for want of a better term) should really have seen their deaths coming a mile away. For the events to unfold as they do, the people with medical experience would have to both fail to adequately monitor their condition, and fail to accurately diagnose the severity of their condition. It's not really a plot hole or anything but it is a sloppy writing contrivance for their doctors to be this bad at their job. There is absolutely no precedent for rapid onset fever death other than it being convenient for this plot to make any sense.

Nah I mean that's pretty true to somebody who has a strong moral character and about loyalty I'd feel the same way I understand where Darrell's coming from and frankly he should have wiped the Dwight out. He's a bad guy so Daryl doesn't like anybody that has been really terrible so it's true to his character and I believe a true to a lot of our character I mean who'd want a guy like that around

Many people have talked about the zombie blood being an issue for them. But to be honest i kind of had a different issue that took me out of the episode. I realize at hilltop these people have a wall. But in a world where when someone dies they become a zombie, how do you leave the front door open to the area where everyone is sleeping? Not to mention how the zombies and the people in the infirmary make no noise as they die. It was just really jarring to watch that as I never really got the horror/suspense aspect because of it

I have a new take on Henry: he was always suppose to die. This show has shown us time and time again that Henry just isn't compatible with this world. He's too weak, reckless, emotional, and defiant to survive. No matter how sad his death was: we all should have seen it coming and how he survived THAT long is nothing more than plot armor 😂

I feel the grove is more underrated, this ep has almost the whole main cast from both sides while the grove had just Carol ( for the most part ) and the ep was followed by that claimer fight which was epic so the events of the grove immediately get undermined by " is " and " A "

I think ep 14 is also such an underrated episode, of course theres the rick and morgan scene, but the overall acting, music and dialogue of that ep are so so good!! I have this bad habit of looking at imdb scores after i watch an episode and i was baffled with how low the score was... I was watching S7 of Got at almost the same time and its crazy to me that that season has episodes with over 9 star ratings while being so nonsensical and some of the acting and writing being so stupid, while (the second half) of S8 is actually reeally consistant and entertaining to watch but most of the episodes have around a 7 Star rating. Sorry for the rant lol

Uh hard disagree. Dwight was the one to carry out Daryl's torture under Negan's watch. Stripping him, torturing him with Easy Street, dog food sandwiches...seriously? Daryl was justified in his resistance to accepting Dwight.

The show is so timeless and well written every time I go back to watch older episodes and still come out with something new. It's like every video you do on underrated episodes are pretty much Every episode. The parts of the fandom that left after season 6 really missed out on the greatness of the show. I think it's safe to say majority of those people turned into "hate watchers" but still secretly loved it.

I think Dog is still back with the main group at either The Common Wealth, Alexandria or Hilltop cause now those are the 3 United Survivors Colonies. He probably won’t be making a return in the Daryl Dixon show but hey, that could be really cool though!!!!!!!!! I’ve heard of some theories where people are saying that Carol will show up so Dog would be nice to see too. I disagree on the Daryl take. Daryl's been tortured and abused by Dwight and the Saviours when he was locked in the closet. He can't hold back he's only just been out for maybe two weeks. Love your videos still just respectfully think differently.

My problem with season 8 is that they kill like 500 people. Like we see most of the hilltops army wiped out we see tons of Alexandrians killed, they kill like 300 saviours like I get its a war but all the people come out of no where and it's never mentioned that half of everyone else left must have been killed in the war

Season 8 is strangely a comfort season for me. And this is coming from someone who loves the comics, especially Carl in them, and thinks seasons 3-6 are the Walking Dead’s golden age. Idk how to really explain it, but the season feels gritty, unrestrained, chaotic, sad, and beautiful all at the same time. Though those can be said as bad things for the season, I think they work well as positives for the season as a whole. Though Carl’s death was uncalled for (and I hate the behind the scenes disaster that went on with him), it told a great story for Rick. And the season as a whole is one of my favorites even just from a storytelling perspective. Just my personal thoughts

I'm sorry but I think this is one of the worst episodes of the entire show. It's laughable how incapable the saviors are during the attack (Simon leading them straight up to the house wide open). Even on first time viewing I was dumbfounded how they just walked right up only to "surprisingly" be ambushed. The action was pretty lame too, Rick ducks and swings his axe THREE times in a row. Then the walkers in the middle of the night stumbling around and making a ton of noise and yet no one woke up? Throughout this episode it felt like sloppy writing.

I appreciate your work but the fact that someone as reasonable as you thinks this episode is underrated as opposed to nonsensical makes me wonder. The whole "infected weapons" part (yes, drawn directly from the comics) is so stupid and inconsistent. They tried to explain it away with the "fever" malarchy. This is NOT TRUE. By season eight, we had already seen numerous episodes where Rick, Daryl, Abraham, etc had been cut, stabbed, sliced (and in Daryl's case, just put in his mouth) bloody things that been in recent contact with a walker. But NOW, infected weapons have the potential to turn people? Right when, it serves the plot to reintroduce a rule we haven’t seen since Morgan kinda mentioned it in season one? Listen, the point of world building is to establish RULES. But then you have to stay consistent. They changed the rules and then suddenly changed them back to serve the ludicrous plot of a SINGLE episode. Then changed it back again. It was insulting to people who had been watching from the beginning. And then to add insult to injury, we have a house that is wall to wall peoole and yet no one screams when they get bitten until there are like fivewalkers roaming around biting folks? Everyone is just sleeping so soundly in a hot, stuffy packed house that everything can go left and no one is alerted until it's too late? Please. I was born on Sunday but not the Sunday this episode aired.🙄😆 No offense intended to your well put together video essay but this episode was absolutely emblematic of the poor writing of the latter seasons, where every episode's storyline was just in service to putting the characters into increasingly inane situations leading up to dumb finales that drove ratings (and i say that as a fan that watched to the bitter end). Nope. This episode was wack.

It’s the inconsistency of HOW the virus works and infects IMO. Weapons covered in walker blood infections and kill’s people. Many other episodes, characters are cover in blood with open wounds but don’t get infected. Other than that it’s a good episode.

I don't think the criticism of weaponizing the walker blood was about it being a bad plan more than it was an enormous plot hole. Never before or since has walker blood ever been any kind of a concern. This coincidentally means it was a pretty bad plan.
