Hi guys, regarding the fuel test, you ideally need to use Tony's M3 or another high performance turbo engine. The reason being these cars now have very sophisticated knock control, so they're always targetting the edge of knock (Tony would perhaps know it as "pinking") and then the car's DME is pulling the timing and / or boost so it runs just below the knock threshold. This allows the engine to be running as much power as it can on the fuel being used. If Tony is regularly using 95 RON fuel, then his car's DME will naturally just "tune" itself to this fuel and he will have become used to the drop in performance. Putting a higher grade fuel in will just allow the DME to run more ignition advance and / or more boost, giving a definite increase in performance. However, there is a caveat to this. He would only notice the increase / decrease if using the car regularly in WOT scenarios (Wide Open Throttle) where the engine is experiencing full load. Obviously just pottering around will mean that the DME won't be experiencing the kind of driving that warranted the knock control being activated. If you're interested in seeing the differences even in different manufacturer's high performance fuels , the test has already been done for you by Officially Gassed and you can watch that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpaWh6qSstGxgIk.html Keep up the good work.

Yes cars now have such sophisticated technology that it’ll know and adjust to the fuel running through. My old jag V8 would have zero benefit to higher octane fuel other than the detergent part.

In almost every case i have seen on a dyno we use in the UK, 99 fuel will give more power than 95, just like race fuel will give more power than 99. It's basic chemistry, the higher octane produces more energy. Tony also needs to educate himself on the proven cleaning properties in V-Power. Their is lots off independent test and data out there ( Evo once did an article).

Great vid guys - nice to have you back. I’m not as knowledgable as others in the comments but I believe using 3 different BMW 330i’s wouldn’t be a fair test. Isn’t every engine always going to be slightly different? That’s why when you get two identical cars on a rolling road they make different results. Use one car for the fuel test, drain the tank between fuels. My money would say V power or the equivalent 99 octane fuel will return higher mpg and bhp than a 95 octane fuel. I think the more tuned the engine, the more significant or noticeable the difference in octanes. Eg a one litre fiesta will see next to no difference but a 600 bhp tuned GTR will see substantial bhp increases with higher octanes - which the tune will maximise. Looking forward to you proving me wrong 👍

I ran a high performance diesel with the V-Power product. Yes it ran a little smoother and quieter than standard diesel. It also had a small amount of urgency when compared to standard diesel. Yes I did get a 2/3 more miles to the gallon but and it’s a big but all of that including the extra MPG never added up to the extra cost of the fuel when filling up. Does that make sense.

As an application developer we are always focusing on User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design. Seems car manufacturers tend to ignore both areas and go for what looks good and rarely consider the function (nearly always form over function). Which to me is backwards. The one exception to this seems to be Gordon Murray. The T50 seems to hit every point bang on! There is no complication everything is functional and has a job to do. No gimmicks whatsoever. Other manufacturers could learn a lot from this master of his trade!

Moores Law. Technology doubles every 2-3 years. There is never a ceiling. Production/ design is dependent on what the super-forming of materials will allow them to do. I think design at the moment in general is generating a paradigm shift. Next generation of electric design will probably be amazing.

I reckon significant design changes are seen less at the moment due to manufacturers trying to reduce costs. Especially now most are having to run design and production lines for both EV and ICE cars. Cars have to conform to many safety regs and there are only so many ways you can design a car and still adhere to those regs. I also agree with Tony, there are only so many ways to design something for optimal use. We’ve been refining car design for a long time, changes going forward will be incremental. Look at websites and mobile phones as examples. Websites pretty much look and behave the same now as we’ve refined the journey so much we’ve hit the optimal user experience. Mobile phones, we get a better processor and camera but the interface and hardware design hardly changes.
@rwretirementliving6423
@rwretirementliving6423 6 ай бұрын
Having run different fuels over a couple of decades as the refinement has improved, my tests have always been counted back to costs. The car magazines, Choice magazine and of course ME, have all found that the 98 Octanes do get better fuel consumption. Many times tested, always the same result. But it costs more. End result, you still get better bang for your buck. The cost difference? 2 % everytime, 98 the winner. In manuals, I believe you get smoother pick up if you are in a gear too tall. There you go.

@BehindTheGlass @STG - it’s not often I get frustrated listening to Sam attempt to discuss technicalities of cars, but when I do I feel compelled to comment (and also hope you bring a third presenter onto the show who can offer some different perspectives and knowledge). Anyway, 87, 89, 91, etc. are octane ratings. Octane is measurement to the degree a fuel RESISTS combustion. For example, diesel requires very high compression and heat to combust whereas gasoline is much lower. A higher octant allows you to ignite the fuel closer to when the piston is at Top Dead Centre (TDC) because it is more resistant to spontaneous combustion. This will translate into more power because the combustion will entirely be on the power phrase of the engine. Fuel with lower octane will ignite before TDC so its combustion is, in essence, working against the engine. This is why the same engine can have its timing adjusted manually (tuning) or automatically (knock sensors) to accommodate fuels with different octane ratings as well as produce different power outputs. It’s also necessary to understand fuels with lower octane actually have more energy than fuels with higher octanes. The energy is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs). HOWEVER, ethanol (the represented by E in the name) has very high octane ratings (e.g., 109) which means it has less energy (BTUs) which means less power. THEREFORE you need to burn MORE FUEL with higher ethanol content. As an extreme, if you ran a vehicle on 100% ethanol (E100), it would consume ~30% MORE FUEL. So, in conclusion, Tony running the lowest ethanol content at an octane appropriate for the engine is the most powerful and fuel efficient.

Fuels are manufactured to a British standard. And come from the same refineries. The additives are different. Aren’t the super fuels less green having lower bio content? Having used Shell V power (mainly when on offer!) saw minimal difference in mpg, but different routes, so difficult to compare. But even the blurb shows it as minimal. It seems to be marketing. The price difference doesn’t warrant any so called benefits in my opinion. Older cars may benefit more due to cleaning of injectors etc? Price difference means it isn’t worth it. For me!
