Wow that mom was a smart and brave woman. She had all of the contacts in order as well. She was planning escape possibly before she even was caught and put in prison. Every day she suffered she probably told herself if she ever got out of there alive that she’d escape and get her daughter out of there. She completely knew the risks and did what she had to do for a better future.

Because people born into times of peace and have only seen thier own ways and lives dont appreciate how bad it actually is in other countries. Not saying America is a perfect country because no country is perfect but at the end of the day people need to realize the basis of what democracy is built on is the safest way for people. Be thankful you actually have a right to speak up, have a right to say what you think. That could change. Ive always thought Americans are pretty sheltered and don't know History and don't understand the world outside of America.

Idk if you ever got a response but there are activist groups that help defectors. As far as I know the people who want to leave have to gather money to pay a broker. I don't think you can just donate money and make it happen. It's more complicated than that. But at this point with the border closures and increased security i don't know how they will escape. But I would just say support activist groups maybe Yeonmi has some information.

It's truly sad that even now there are still descendents of hmong people who had help the US during the war still hiding in the mountains and jungle of Laos.

@@andreavanda5402 LMFAO, doubt you even know what Marxism even is, much less know who Karl Marx is, or even read any reputable literature on Marxism. I don't even like Biden, yet Trump is far closer to a totalitarian than Biden is even a hint of being a Marxist. Trump for another four years would've been a disaster. He got lucky taking all the credits(like he always does) for OBAMA's economical success, while simultaneously deny any of the many faults he had(like he always does). He's a literal definition of a sociopathic narcissist that tried to stop a legal and one of the most secure elections in history. Even his military advisors compared him verbatim to Hitler, and were in fear of him attempting a coup(I mean he traitorously incited a riot to stop the legal verification of a democratically elected president, which is amount to treason). Biden was, and still is, far better than the screaming narcissistic man child that was trump. Another democrat has to bail out another republicans economical recession, again. You'd think 2 times in a row, with bill & obama, that people would finally learn, but I guess that's what happens when you cut education funding first thing for decades. It's not a coincidence that the lowest educated & poorest, all voted for trump because they're easily duped by being gullible, especially to a well known con man. 🤦‍♂️😂

Hi yeonmi I'm 42, born in Romania and living Texas, i just learned that my communist dictator caucescu, was changed by a meeting with Kim IL sung. Caucescu was first trying to be a "good communist leader" and embrace the west, then after meeting sung became obsessed with power and control to be like sung, and Romania suffered ever since. Romanians still speak about how they suffered, just as north Korean refugees do about the Kims. We have some shared connection because of these monsters. This is very interesting because this lady was not starving and escaped to survive, but was relatively well off there. Lots of people think the USA (and indeed here in the UK) is always an easy life. It is not. We have a shortage of housing and people work veryr hard here in the UK. Those coming in from all over the world (we have 17m more against a population of the UK in total of 67m in the UK than when I was born) thinking it will be easy here like on films, but it is a shock when they realise that is not so.

I can't relate on the scale of the entire country, but as someone born into a cult it can often be harder on the outside for awhile. You miss the decisions always being made for you. Suddenly you could marry anyone you connect with, before you had 2 to 6 options leadership would allow you to pick from. A piece of you misses that simplicity. I can imagine that was hard to hear though, when one person literally left for immediate survival like need of food and the other is saying that in some ways the outside life is harder (she could have meant more complex, which I'm sure it is more complicated with more choices and expectations). I'm glad each these lovely humans made it out and I hope for continued healing and helping others for both of these women.
