PROJECT DREAM

Күн бұрын

Motorsport is an always changing world, whenever it’s time to develop a new racing car, there's always someone who thinks outside the box, and crafts something completely different from their opponents.
Sometimes these cars are more of a mistake rather than being revolutionary, sometimes they underperform, or simply never get to race. But there have been a few times when these cars became icons, an example of how far we can go with our creativity and brilliance, that’s where the magic happens.
This is the case of the Deltawing, arguably the most ambitious racing car design of the 21st Century. A car that not only captured the heart of the community for its unusual triangular design, but it showed how it is possible to achieve speed, matching the average LMP2 racing pace, even with unconventional approaches nobody dares to take.
Half the weight, half the fuel, half the power, half the drag, all of the speed. This is the story of the DeltaWing project.
We hope you'll enjoy the video! ;)

I loved following the fortunes of this car when it was around. Far from being a failure it got up to third place for a while during Petit Le Mans and led the Daytona 24 hours for many laps before colliding with a car that had spun. I naively hoped it would open the door to more experimental vehicles being tried. It never ever reached its full potential because it was never allowed to. Thanks for doing this video. It made motorsport more enjoyable for me while it was around. I lost interest in the sport after it went. It was an opportunity for motorsport to progress in a more planet friendly direction and to be really interesting while it did so.

I just wonder what would come out of a grand touring category where this, a fan car, and a pikes peak machine could compete. I've got this hunch the car got booted from the tracks is because it doesn't look carlike. Win on sunday sell on monday is an impossibility with this thing cause nothing on the showroom floors even vaguely resembles it. Big motor money is what's been driving racing for the longest time banking on a return on investment in sales so if the deltawing concept would have been competitive more teams would have shown up with their variations of this, but big motocorp money would have dried up. Also, Great video on a very interesting topic. Well done Project Dream!

Due to the unique concept virtually all rollmoment had to be supported by the rear axis. the delta-wing team came up with quite an ingenius way to cope with that. unlike with heave-roll-systems used in f1 the delta wing still had one spring-damper unit for each wheel (like in traditional independent suspension systems). of course it was pushrod/bellcrank-driven, but the trick was that they put a so called T-lever in between the bellcranks and the spring-damper-units (similar to how a third-spring-damper system is connected). they connected to spring-dampers right at the ends of the T-lever and the bellcranks further inward. in heave the whole T could rock forward and the displacement at the spring-dampers was the same as on the bellcranks. in roll however the T-lever could rotate about its 'leg' and because the bellcranks are connected further inward towards that rotation axis, each spring damper unit is compressed more than how much the bellcrank moved. this way they could achieve two different motion-ratios for heave and roll with just a smart arrangement of the spring-dampers. they did not have to any fancy rolldampers or heavesprings, they where abled to use of the shelf dampers simply and tune them to their needs.

Son of Don Panoz, Dan, designed some very fast (conventional), competitive race cars of his own - Panoz Esperante GTR-1. I met Katherine Legge at COTA (2013 I believe) when she drove the Delta Wing (I have a scale model of it). It is/was a great "out-of-the-box" design that was very fast. People (other competitors) were threatened by it, and it is unfortunate. It deserves it's won series. Very nice story on the history of the Deltawing.

On March 10th 2012 I was invited to AAR for a private unveiling of the Deltawing a week before it was shown at Sebring for the first time. It was a special gathering with Dan Gurney saying a short speech and with champagne being served (rather than sprayed). I later went to LeMans that year to see it run. It was cool to be in the Nissan hospitality area above the pit box where the silhouette of the car (shaped like an arrow) was marked in tape on the concrete. It was certainly a distinctive detail and seeing the Deltawing on track was incredibly innovative looking.

Like many motorsports enthusiasts, I shy away from radical design concepts. I find a shape that I like and I hang on for dear life. But there have been exceptions - the six-wheeled car and the fan car. These vehicles integrated amazing technology without tremendous changes in the core body sculpture. But the DeltaWing? Wow. It broke all the rules and yes, I thought it was just short of unsightly. But it grew on me. And I certainly appreciated the technological advancements. So while the DeltaWing was rejected by the motorsports family, I truly believe that the tech changes that are coming in the future - and electrifying the vehicles will demand them - will find their way back to this remarkable endeavor to borrow new ideas and, above all, inspiration.

Panoz refusing to chose between owning the series and owning a team is the one and only person responsible for the DeltaWing failure. Everything in endurance racing all over the world revolves around the BOP (Balance Of Performance). This is the heart of the concept. All participating cars must have their performance assessed as fairly as possible and various parameters adjusted (weight, power, fuel tank capacity, fuel pump speed) with the goal to even out performance as fairly as possible so that cars are compared on their reliability. The BOP is a hard battleground. All manufacturers continuously track, report and discuss any performance parameter they consider uneven. And the owner of the series who is responsible for the BOP has an immense power. A slight tweak one way or an other could give a huge advantage to one team over the others. It is obvious and accepted by everyone that a completely new design needs a test period to assess its actual performances before including it to the BOP and making the right adjustments. That's what the special Team 56 is designed for. Most often the concepts don't survive the reality check because they can't reach minimal requirements and they are abandoned. Sometimes they have actually good performance like the DeltaWing. And obviously since they are not restricted by the BOP they outperform the cars that are restricted during that test period. When the DeltaWing did just that it was something uncommon but not revolutionary. The truth is endurance racing is a long run. Passing the test period is only the prerequisite to be allowed to participate in the actual race. Which starts when the car is included into the BOP. And that is when the problems started for the DeltaWing, because of the conflicting interests of Panoz being both series owner and team owner. It's obvious that other participants started to openly accuse him of trying to cheat the BOP to his advantage. In other series where all cars have the same common specs, having the series owner being also a participant team owner is no issue because all rules apply the same to all teams. But endurance being all about comparing cars with different specs evened out by the BOP, having this situation is simply not acceptable. As long as Panoz insisted on holding both roles of series owner and team owner the DeltaWing was doomed because the only way for him to prove to other team owner that he wasn't trying to cheat the BOP to his own advantage was to cheat the BOP against himself. Other manufacturers where not afraid of having a fair race against the DeltaWing concept. They were afraid of having an unfair race against the guy who had control over the BOP. So Ben had no other choice than make the decision himself and separate from Panoz to get out of the conflict of interest. But Panoz greed didn't let go. He kept on engaging his own DeltaWing team. And obviously other participants united in protest against every single bit of BOP ruling that seemed to give an advantage to Panoz himself. The DeltaWing was only collateral victim of the conflict of interest Panoz had created. Any other concept put in the same situation would have suffered the same consequences. There was also a serious safety issue because the DeltaWing was so low that other car drivers had difficulties seeing it in their mirrors and it also had difficulties to turn at low speed forcing it to take different trajectories than other cars under yellow flags. Combining a different trajectory and being hard to see in a packed group stacked behind a safety car resulted in the DeltaWing being involved in several accidents under yellows. That was a serious incompatibility that put the life of the pilots at risk. And that was the reason for forcing the DeltaWing to return to the pits each time there was a yellow flag until they could find a suitable solution. I have confidence with time they would have found a solution to that safety issue. But the main issue of having the BOP owner being also participant was resolved the hard way, so the safety issue became irrelevant.

I remember watching this at LM24H years ago - it was super intriguing but I remember it wobbling through the Esses and chicanes and it didn't survive the night. Still a super fascinating car to watch race

Saw one burn to the ground at CTMP in Ontario. Aside from that part, it was really fascinating to watch in highly variable elevation on track with blind turn ins.

I've always wished someone would start a racing series where there was only safety rules enforced. Let engineers come to with what is the fastest way to get around the track. No rules on car design, motors, tires, fuel etc. That's how we'd see some amazing innovation. The spirit of racing has been lost to big money companies who tell the series the rules they want. Someone put up a million dollars and say meet at Lemans on a certain date 2 years from now and see what people can come up with!

This car reminds me of the GM Firebird 1 concept from the 1950s, which was directly inspired by rockets and fighter jets. But unlike the Firebird, the jet-like design actually serves a proper performance application. I'm also digging the Ridge Racer 4 and Gran Turismo-based aesthetic of the video, so give yourself a pat on the back.
