The roots of American music run deep in North Carolina, and the diversity of our music mirrors the diversity of our musicians’ creative homes. In the Water is a special limited video series for the 2019 North Carolina Year of Music that highlights the symbolic and literal places that shape the sounds and souls of North Carolina musicians. Each episode of In The Water features a North Carolina musician performing a unique location across the state.
The Durham, N.C. based indie folk group the Mountain Goats performed their In The Water concert at the Hamlet Depot & Museum in southeastern North Carolina. John Darnielle, the frontman of the band, wanted to perform in John Coltrane's hometown: Hamlet, N.C. Built in 1897, the Hamlet Depot is the only Victorian Queen Anne style train station in the state, and it was once a bustling transportation hub and major north-south and east-west crossroads for passenger and freight trains.
the Mountain Goats premiered their new song "Let Me Bathe in Demonic Light," in the In The Water film.

This really illustrated what a set of fucking pipes John has. You can practically hear every single wall his voice is bouncing off of when he projects.

I don't think you care enough for me to write jd's biography, so I won't lol, but you're write in a roundabout sort of way. Honestly though, I think his gestures are just cause he's used to having a guitar/piano/mic when he performs

Down at the end of a burnt out street a shell of a house where my friends and me used to meet someday the old flesh will give way to the new find a functioning mirror inside and slip right through And there - there I'll be and who? who's coming with me? To show me my one true face when I arrive at my preordained place. Chain of command may be ten years long I emerge in Manhattan still young and strong someday the hell-hound will pick up the scent on the trail zero in on my penthouse and then pierce the veil And there - there I'll be and who? who's coming with me? To show me my one true face when i arrive at my preordained place. Hopeless but free lit up like a marquee over the freeway where does the long trail end? Here - here with my new friends fruits of the spirit, heavy on the vine undying hunger, deep in the bloodline dodge the hook like a steelhead swim right through the night break the surface and rise like geyser when my time is up And there - there I'll be and who? who among you? who's coming with me? To show me my one true face when I arrive at my preordained place. When I arrive when I arrive when I arrive

Same. Idk. Depends on why. For me, he is someone who has dealt with all the uglinessifw has to offer and come through the other side having faced down demons and come back breathing. He didnt succumb to the darkness or stay there, so its inspiring and has helped me pick myself up, knowing he has done the same. He might approve of that lol. Better hero than say David Foster Wallace or Hunter S Thompson

And somehow South Carolina is better known for Hootie than for Eartha Kitt or Dizzy Gilespie, and I think a lot of people think James Brown is from Detroit. Despite my whole family being into one form of Jazz or another, I was first introduced to Coltrane when a friend in college loaned me Giant Steps, which had just been released as a CD remaster. To this day, Giant Steps and Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain are probably two of my favorite Jazz albums. Those and Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters LP.

I hear Asheville is a great town! Believe it or not, John was born in my hometown, Bloomington IN. Moved to So Cal. Then Portland, some stops in Iowa, Chicago for a minute maybe? and finally NC. I probably missed some. Hope that doesn’t seem super creepy. I just remember because I saw (or heard?) some clip...somewhere...in which he lists all the places he’s lived. Maybe the KEXP performance?

@@bear_6875 IDK man, a big part of why I'm not that into tMG anymore is due to the overly loud saxophone farting its corny melodies all over every track for the last several releases.
@bear_6875
@bear_6875 3 жыл бұрын
@@pleasedrivefaster873 I really do feel you there. With their newer stuff I tend do go through this process of disliking it when I first hear it and then eventually six months later I think it's awesome. And the brass is a huge part of that initial turnoff. I guess at this point I just trust that I'll appreciate it eventually, but it's true that I didn't used to have that initial reaction before the horn section arrived.
@pleasedrivefaster873
@pleasedrivefaster873 3 жыл бұрын
@@bear_6875 It's fine when it's used more sparingly. Transcendental Youth had horns, but they weren't so front and center. Beat The Champ had horns as well, but the tone and melodies were varied enough to fit in better with the rest of the instrumentation and the vibe of the album overall. NHM's infamous ITAOTS has plenty of horns, but they are an integral part of that albums diverse soundscape. These days with tMG, one can only grit his teeth and wait for the inevitable, predictable sax/horn melody to kick in. It sounds like someone took a standard tMG recording and recorded a youtube "cover" of the original track by freestyling an uninspired sax melody over the original. It's just awful. I listened to John's solo recording of the title track from GITK recently and loved it. It's just a shame that that kind of sound seems to be relegated to EPs anymore. Remember the EPs that were popping out 10 or so years ago? Black Pear Tree, Satanic Messiah, Moon Colony Bloodbath, on and on. The albums of the era were amazing as well. Hopefully one day we'll see a return to this style of recording from JD and Friends.
