The choice of sax in this piece is seriously inspired. Like the lonely melancholy night feel of it is just perfect for the song.

If you like this song i highly recommend listening to the live episode "Steal Smoked Fish" from the I Only Listen To The Mountain Goats podcast where John talks about the experience (i'm pretty sure) this song it about. He talks about visiting his old apartment building and the narrative is strikingly similar to the lyrics here.

He drops an actual address in this song about being a drug addict and having wonderful friends who aren't around anymore. I discovered this band and went through the catalog and heard this one, and it turned out that I was a drug addict with some wonderful friends (who now aren't around anymore) living less than a mile from where this song takes place decades later. And holy shit did this one hit hard. For heaven's sake my name is even quinn. Music is amazing and I think that John is maybe the best at it.

I'm grateful to you every single day for uploading this song, but I had a particularly horrible day yesterday and was listening to this on repeat by 10 am. so i thought maybe it was time for the closest thing to an actual verbal thank you that one can do across the internet. Thank you. This upload, this song, and of course, this band, all mean a lot to me. :)

i usually find radio-style production (LOW END and tons of compression) really excessive, but tbh it works so well with this recording
